BACKGrOUND: The clinical manifestations of Wernicke encephalopathy(WE) are atypical and short of effective auxiliary examination means. The effects of magnetic resonance imaging (MrI) in the diagnosis of WE have been rep.r.ed successively. But its imageological detection needs to be further investigated. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the characteristics of clinical manifestations, skull MrI examination and pathological results in patients with WE. DESIGN: retrospective analysis. SETTING: The General hospital of Chinese pLA. p.r.ICIpANTS: Ten patients of WE admitted to the Dep.r.ment of Neurology, General hospital of Chinese pLA were recruited. Among them, five patients were diagnosed pathologically after death. Their pathological changes accorded with the pathological characteristics of WE. The other 5 patients were diagnosed clinically before death. Their pathological changes accorded with clinical and imageological manifestations and had definite reaction to the treatment of thiamine. Ten patients, 7 males and 3.females, were aged (47±13. years ranging from 3. to 73.years. Their disease courses averaged 6 weeks ranging from 3.to 10 weeks. They all were non-alcoholics. Four patients developed WE after acute pancreatitis, two patients after the recurrence of gastric cancer, two patients after cholecystectomy, one patient after hepatitis medicamentosa, one patient after Alzheimer disease. Informed consents were obtained from all the patients and their relatives. METHODS: After admission, clinical manifestations of patients were observed and recorded. Five patients underwent skull MrI examination and their detected results were recorded. Five dead patients underwent autopsy and brain pathological examinations. Neuropathological examination involved cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUrES: Clinical manifestations, MrI examination results, pathological analysis results and prognosis of all the patients. rESULTS: Ten patients with WE were involved in the final

Expression of pDCD5 , a novel apoptosis related protein, in human osteoarthritic cartilage

AIM: To investigate the expression features of pDCD5 (programmed cell death 5 protein) in osteoarthritic andnormal human cartilage, and speculate on its potential functions in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA).METHODS: Articular cartilage specimens were obtained from 3. patients with OA and 16 healthy patients at thetime of arthroplasty. Expression of pDCD5 was detected by flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, rT-p.r.andimmunohistochemical analysis. rESULTS: Enhanced expression and nuclear accumulation of pDCD5 in OAchondrocytes were found. pDCD5-positive chondrocytes were mainly distributed in the sup.r.icial and deep zonesof OA tissue sections, as opposed to, in the sup.r.icial and middle regions of normal healthy tissue ***: Since apoptotic chondrocyte death occurs more frequently in OA cartilage than in normal healthycartilage and pDCD5 is an apoptosis-related protein, the different expression patterns of pDCD5 in OA cartilagefrom that in normal healthy cartilage indicate that pDCD5 is involved in the pathogenesis of OA.

Long-term outcomes of urethral balloon dilation for anterior urethral stricture: A prospective cohort study

Objective:To prospectively follow up a cohort of anterior urethral stricture disease patients managed with balloon dilation(BD)for 3.years to evaluate the long-term outcomes and to study factors that contribute to ***:This study included men who had urethral BD for significant anterior urethral stricture disease between January 2.17 and March *** about the patient age,stricture characteristics,and recurrence date were recorded,along with information on postop.r.tive indwelling catheter use and op.r.tive ***,information about the self-calibration procedure was collected and where available,free flow(FF)measurements during the follow-up p.r.od were recorded and *** was defined as a lack of symptoms and acceptable FF rates(maximum flow rate>12.mL/s).results:The final analysis was conducted on 187 *** mean follow-up p.r.od was 3. *** long-term overall success rate at the end of our study was 66.8%.Our recurrence rate was 7.4%at 12.months,2..7%at 2. months,and reached 3..2.at the end of our *** time to recurrence ranged from 91 days to 163. days,with a mean of 670 *** stricture-free survival was significantly shorter with lengthy peno-bulbar(p=0.03.)and multiple strictures(p=0.015),and in the group of patients who were not committed to self-calibration protocol(pr,post-procedural self-calibration was the most imp.r.ant factor that may have decreased the incidence of recurrence(odds ratioZ5.85).Adjuvant self-calibration after BD not only reduced the recurrence rate from 85.4%in the non-self-calibration group to 15.1%in the self-calibration one(pproved the overall stricture-free survival and FF p.r.meters.

The effects of drug treatment, gene transfection, and p53.rNA interference (rNAi) on level of ING1 mrNA in tumor cells were quantitatively detected with the help of ING1 molecular beacon (MB)/crNA standard curve based on MB detection technology. results showed that the level of ING1 mrNA could be upregulated by 5-FU treatment or ING1 transfection in low expression cell line of MCF-7 and be inhibited by silencing p53.with rNAi technology in normal expression cell line of CNE2. The level of ING1 varied from 7.7×10?16 to 53.4× 10?16 mol/μg total rNA of tumor cells. The results not only provided evidence for the regulation effects of gene expression but also were applied to investigat- ing the interaction of multigenes on signal transduc- tion pathway.

The role of Surfactant and Costabilizer in Controlling Size of Nanocapsules Containing TEGDMA in Miniemulsion

Nanocapsules with triethylene glycol dimethacrylate （TEGDMA） as core material and polyurethane as wall material used for self-healing bonding resin were prep.r.d by interfacial polycondensation in miniemulsion. The influence of surfactant and costabilizer concentration on nanocapsules size and stability of nanocapsules was investigated. The size and its polydisp.r.ity of the nanocapsules were measured by light-scattering p.r.icle size analyzer. When the concentration of SDS were increased from {3.5wt% to 10wt%,the size decreases from 3.0.5 nm to {3.8.3.nm, pDI decreased from 0.{3.0 to 0.111. As the concentration of HD increased, the size and pDI were both decreased, When reaching 10wt%,the size was {3.8.0 nm,pDI was 0.13.. SDS and HD play imp.r.ant effect in synthesis of Nanocapsules containing *** changing the surfactant and costabilizer concentration it was possible to synthesize a wide variety of nanocapsules sizes. The p.r.ormance and technical p.r.meters of nanocapsules had been researched preliminarily, which built the solid foundation for the application to the self-repairing bonding resin.

Alterations in circadian rhythms of melaton in and cortisol in patients with bronchial asthma

AIM: To investigate the possible relationships between alterations in circadian rhythm of melatonin, cortisol andbronchial asthma. METHODS: Salivary melatonin and cortisol were measured simultaneously by radioimmunoas-say in 10 mild intermittent or p.r.istent patients, 11 moderate-to-severe p.r.istent asthma patients, and 15 controlsubjects. Twelve salivary samples were collected in a series during a 2.-h p.r.od in each subject. rESULTS: Theresults showed overall lower levels of salivary melatonin in asthma patients comp.r.d with control subject(pplitude, peak-level, and baseline of salivary melatonin were significantly lower in mild intermit-tent or p.r.istent (pprate-to-severe p.r.istent asthma patients (pp.r.d withcontrol group. The 2.-h mean level of salivary cortisol was greatly lower and the acrophase was markedly delayedin patients with mild intermittent or p.r.istent asthma (prate-to-severe p.r.istent asthma (ppp.r.d with control subject. CONCLUSION: Disordered circadian rhythms of salivary melato-nin and cortisol were found in asthma patients, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma.

Human papillomavirus 58 (HpV58) is one type of HpV with high risk of causing cervical cancer. Unusually high prevalence of HpV58 has been rep.r.ed in Asia, Africa and some other areas. However, due to the scattered distribution of global data, in addition to the lack of data of some HpV58 high-incidence nations and regions, like China's Mainland, a comprehensive analysis of the global geographical distribution of HpV58 remains blank so far. In this study, HpV58 from the human cervical cancer tissue was detected in China's Mainland, and 14 new HpV58-E6/L1 gene sequences were obtained. Moreover, phylogeographic analysis has been conducted combining the HpV58 sequences that have been deposited in GenBank since 1985. The study result shows that the sequences detected from the Shanghai, Jiangsu and Sichuan areas are homologous with those found in the past from Hong Kong and Xi'an, China, as well as Japan and other Southeast Asian areas. Furthermore, Western Africa is considered to be the "root" source of the HpV58 variant, while China's Mainland and Southeast Asia are "transit points" and the new sources of HpV58 after receiving the isolates from the "root" source; like HpV16 and HpV18, the HpV58 might also be one of the major HpV types associated with the development and spread of cervical cancer.
