The development of stationary patterns on a thin polymer surface subject to an electric field is studied by means of the hexagonal-planform weakly nonlinear stability analysis and numerical simulations. The time evolution of the interface between the air and the polymer film on the unbounded spatial domain is described by a thin film equation, incorporating the electric driving force and the surface *** nonlinear interfacial growth includes the amplitude equations and superposition of one-dimensional structures at regular orientations. The pattern selection is driven by the subcritical instability mechanism in which the relative thickness of the polymer film plays a critical role.

Analysis of the propagation of waves in the lower hybrid range of frequencies in the past has been done using ray tracing and the WKB *** in algorithms and the availability of massively parallel computer architectures has permitted the solving of theMaxwell-Vlasov systemforwave propagation directly[Wright et al.,***(2004),11,2473-2479].These simulations have shown that the bridging of the spectral gap(the difference between the high injected phase velocities and the slower phase velocity at which damping on electrons occurs)can be explained by the diffraction effects captured in the full wave algorithm-an effect missing in WKB based ***,these full wave calculations were done with a Maxwellian electron distribution and the presence of RF power induces quasilinear velocity space diffusion that causes distortions away from an *** sufficient power,a flattened region or plateau is formed between the point of most efficient damping on electrons at about 2-3 vthe and where collisional and quasilinear diffusion *** address this discrepancy and better model experiment,we have implemented[Valeo et al.,”Full-wave Simulations of LH wave propagation in toroidal plasma with non-Maxwellian electron distributions”,18th Topical Conference on Radio Frequency power in plasmas,AIp Conference proceedings(2007)]a non-Maxwellian dielectric in our full wave *** will show how these effects modify the electron absorption relative to what is found for a Maxwellian distribution.

An overview of the Czech national R&D project HiLASE(High average power pulsed laser) is presented. The project focuses on the development of advanced high repetition rate, diode pumped solid state laser(DpSSL) systems with energies in the range from mj to 100 j and repetition rates in the range from 10 Hz to 100 kHz. Some applications of these lasers in research and hi-tech industry are also presented.

Members of the Botryosphaeriaceae are well known fungi associated with dieback,canker and fruit rot on various hosts worldwide,including *** aim of this study was identify a large collection of Botryosphaeriaceae species associated with dieback and stem-end rot of mango in the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil,and compare the species in relation to mycelial growth,pathogenicity and virulence.A total of 115 isolates were sampled and based on morphology and DNA sequence data(ITS and EF1-α)seven taxa were identified,namely,Botryosphaeria dothidea,***,Fusicoccum fabicercianum,Neofusicoccum parvum,*** ***,Neoscytalidium dimidiatum and pseudofusicoccum *** and *** were the most commonly isolated species,which represented 37%and 33%of all isolates *** is reported for the first time in association with mango diseases *** were significant differences among the species obtained in this study in relation to optimum temperature for mycelial growth and mycelial growth *** species were pathogenic on mango *** were significant differences in virulence among the species,with *** and *** being the most virulent species,while *** was the least virulent.

The performance of a wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) free-space optical (FSO) commu-nication system in a turbulent atmosphere employing optical amplifiers to improve capacity is investigated, in the presence of amplified spontaneous emission noise, scintillation, beam spreading, atmospheric attenuation and interchannel crosstalk. Using on-off keying modulation, Monte Carlo simulation techniques are used to obtain the average bit error rate and system capability due to scintillation and the effect of introducing a power control algorithm (pCA) to the system is investigated. The pCA ensures that at any receiving instant, the same turbulence- free powers are received by all the receiving lenses. The performance of various WDM FSO communication system configurations such as non-amplified systems with an adaptive decision threshold (NOAADT), non- amplified systems with a non-adaptive decision threshold, fixed gain amplified systems with an adaptive decision threshold, fixed gain amplified systems with a non- adaptive decision threshold and saturated gain amplified systems with a non-adaptive decision threshold (SOA- NADT) are investigated. Results obtained show that the SOANADT is superior to the NOAADT and the pCA is only beneficial in amplified systems.

The widespread use of pesticides has resulted in detectable residues throughout the environment,sometimes at concentrations well above regulatory ***,the development of safe,effective,field-practical,and economically feasible strategies to mitigate the effects of pesticides is *** is an organophosphorus herbicide that is degraded to aminomethylphosphonic acid(AMpA),a toxic and persistent metabolite that can accumulate in soil and sediment and translocate to *** this study,we investigated the binding efficacy of activated carbon(AC)and calcium montmorillonite(CM)clay to decrease AMpA bioavailability from soil and AMpA translocation to *** isotherms and thermodynamic studies on AC and CM were conducted and showed tight binding(enthalpy values>-20 k j/mol)for AMpA with high capacities(0.25 mol/kg and 0.38 mol/kg,respectively),based on derivations from the Langmuir model.A hydra assay was utilized to indicate toxicity of AMpA and the inclusion of 1%AC and CM both resulted in 90%protection of the hydra(**p≤0.01).Further studies in glyphosate-contaminated soil showed that AC and CM significantly reduced AMpA bioavailability by 53%and 44%,*** in genetically modified(GM)corn showed a conversion of glyphosate to AMpA in roots and sprouts over a 10-day exposure *** of AC and CM reduced AMpA residues in roots and sprouts by 47%-61%.These studies collectively indicate that AC and CM are effective sorbents for AMpA and could be used to reduce AMpA bioavailability from soil and AMpA residues in GM corn plants.
