With the increase in longevity and demographic shift, menopause is emerging as one of the major health issues affecting middle aged women in developing countries. In this study our aim was to define & develop useful predictive indicators to assess menopausal health status in women with diverse socio-economic & cultural backgrounds. The model was developed using the data drawn from known published works as well as our own epidemiological & clinical case records. A linear equation was derived and expected results were obtained and analysed. The outcome was measured in terms of menopausal health & wellbeing index. Wide cultural diversity, unequal socio-economic status and gender inequality are some of the sensitive multi factorial determinants that influence the menopausal health. Education and availability of optimal quality health care facilities positively influenced level of awareness and improved the health seeking behavior & health literacy. The menopausal health & wellbeing index can be used as a predictive tool to develop interventional management modalities to improve quality of life.

While the amount of water used by a crop can be measured using lysimeters or eddy covariance systems, it is more common to estimate this quantity based on weather data and crop-related factors. Among these approaches, the standard crop coefficient method has gained widespread use. A limitation of the standard crop coefficient approach is that it applies to “standard conditions” that are invariant from field to field. In this article, we describe a method for estimating daily crop water use (CWU) that is specific to individual fields. This method, the “spectral crop coefficient” approach, utilizes a crop coefficient numerically equivalent to the crop ground cover observed in a field using remote sensing. This “spectral crop coefficient” Ksp is multiplied by potential evapotranspiration determined from standard weather observations to estimate CWU. We present results from a study involving three farmers' fields in the Texas High plains in which CWU estimated using the Ksp approach is compared to observed values obtained from eddy covariance measurements. Statistical analysis of the results suggests that the Ksp approach can produce reasonably accurate estimates of daily CWU under a variety of irrigation strategies from fully irrigated to dryland. These results suggest that the Ksp?approach could be effectively used in applications such as operational irrigation scheduling, where its field-specific nature could minimize over-irrigation and support water conservation.

Background: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), is a common malignancy in the Indian population. In locally advanced disease, chemoradiation is the standard of care. Although induction chemotherapy has been much studied, no clear benefit has been identified apart from laryngeal preservation. A few randomized trials have demonstrated improved response rate, disease free survival, and overall survival, with induction chemotherapy. Nimotuzumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody targeting epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFR). Unlike other Anti-EGFR monoclonal antibodies, it is demonstrated to be safer when combined with chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy. Aim: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of concurrently administered nimotuzumab with chemo-radiotherapy in patients with HNSCC in usual health care setting. Methods: This was an open-label, single arm study, with retrospective analysis of results. patients above 18 years of age, and having histologically confirmed, advanced HNSCC were included in the study. The patients were treated with 3 cycles of induction chemotherapy consisting of modified TpF regimen along with nimotuzumab (200 mg IV) on Day 1, followed by radiotherapy for a dose of 66 Gy along with concurrent weekly cisplatin (30 mg/m2) and nimotuzumab (200 mg) throughout the course of radiation. patients were evaluated using RECIST criteria, 4 weeks after the last cycle of chemotherapy. Results: Sixteen patients were included in this study, with mean age of 54 ± 11 years.?Most common sub-site of cancer was oral cavity in 69% (n = 11), followed by pharynx in 19% (n = 3).?Four patients had metastasis at the time of presentation. Six patients (37.5%) had progressive disease and four patients (25%) were lost to follow-up. The combination chemotherapy with nimotuzumab was well tolerated. Evaluation of Weed Control Efficacy and Seed Cotton Yield in Glyphosate Tolerant Transgenic Cotton

Cotton is one of the important crops that have been genetically altered to address challenges with weed and insect control. The research was conducted with glyphosate resistant cotton hybrids during winter irrigated season of 2009-10 and 2010-11 at the experimental site of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, with the objective, to find out the weed control efficacy and yield of transgenic cotton hybrid with the application of glyphosate. Glyphosate was applied as post-emergence application on 25 and 65 DAS at 900, 1350, 1800, 2700, 3600 and 5400 g a.e./ha in MRC 7347 BG-II RRF test hybrid. These treatments were compared with hand weeding on 15 and 30 DAS and unweeded control. In both sprays, post-emergence application of glyphosate 2700, 3600 and 5400 g a.e./ha registered lower weed density and higher weed control efficiency in transgenic cotton hybrid compared with other treatments. Seed cotton yield (3195 and 3092 kg·ha-1 during 2009-10 and 2010-11 respectively) was significantly higher in post-emergence application of glyphosate at 2700 g a.e./ha. Increased use of transgenic cotton with herbicide and pest resistance has resulted in more efficient insect and weed management practices.

Hydrazone derivatives of vanillin are found to possess anti-bacterial activities. Based on higher bio-activity of hydrazones, new hydrazone derivatives were synthesized from piperdine-4-carboxylicacid methyl ester (1). The compounds 1-pyrimidine-2-yl piperidine-4-carboxylicacid(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy benzylidine)-hy- drazide (10), 1-pyrimidine-2-yl piperidine-4-carboxylicacid (3,4-dimethoxy benzylidine) hydrazide (11), 1-pyrimidine-2-yl piperidine-4-carboxylicacid(4-butoxy-3-methoxy benzylidine)-hydrazide (12), 1-pyr- imidine-2-yl piperidine-4-carboxylicacid(3-methoxy-4(2-methoxy ethoxy) benzylidine)-hydrazide (13) were synthesized, purified and characterized by 1HNMR, 13CNMR, LCMS, FT-IR and HpLC techniques. The synthesized hydrazone derivatives were further checked for anti-bacterial activities by paper disc diffusion method against pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus bacterial strains.

Seasonality is recognised as a constraint to agricultural production and food and nutrition security of rural households. It alters the energy intake from different groups of foods based on the availability. These variations in energy intake affect the nutritional status of the population. Eight villages in Wardha district of Maharashtra state and eleven villages in Koraput district of Odisha state were purposefully selected for the study. Foods consumed by households were collected using a semi-quantitative questionnaire in three rounds in 2013-14 and 2014-15 to cover the lean (January-April), planting (May-August) and harvest (September-December) periods in agriculture. Cereals (wheat and rice), pulses, roots and tubers, fats and sugars were consumed daily in Wardha. In Koraput, the daily diet included cereals (rice and finger millet), other vegetables, fats and sugars. Cereals supplied majority of the total energy intake in both the study area (63% in Wardha and 85% in Koraput);the contribution is higher during lean period in Wardha and during planting in Koraput. Significant variation was found in the mean intake of food groups and the energy obtained from them between seasons except for few food groups. It was found to be positive during the planting season in Koraput and negative during lean period and harvest season when compared with the average energy intake across three seasons;in Wardha, energy intake was positive during harvest season followed by lean and was negative during planting season. It was also found that most small land holders (pending on seasons and majority of energy intake was sourced from public distribution system. Seasonality plays a crucial role in energy intake of individuals through fluctuation in availability and accessibility of food;this in turn will impact the nutritional status of the rural popula

Background: Extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) producing E. coli co-producing other β-lactamases and exhibiting co-resistance to different antibiotic classes continue to emerge as a threat to clinical field. This study aimed to analyze the co-production of New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase-1 (blaNDM-1) in ESBL producing plasmid-bearing clinical isolates collected from two tertiary care centres in Kerala, South India, and to understand their genetic relatedness. Methods: Antibiotic resistance phenotypes of 44 clinical isolates were determined by disc-diffusion method. plasmid-bearing isolates, detected by the alkaline-lysis method, which also tested positive for ESBL production, were screened for the presence of blaNDM-1 by polymerase chain reaction. plasmid, random amplified polymorphic DNA profiles and blaNDM-1 sequence-based phylogenetic tree were analyzed to understand the genotypic similarities among the isolates. Results: Beta-lactam antibiotics, quinolones, cephalosporins, used in this study, and AZM were found to be ineffective against the isolates as significantly high number of isolates were resistant to these antibiotics (p plasmid bearing isolates constituted 57% (n = 25), all of which were found to be ESBL producers. blaNDM-1 amplicons were noticed in four (16%) isolates and these DNA sequences showed homology between them and with similar sequences reported from other countries like Japan and Korea. plasmid and RApD profiles demonstrated that most of the isolates, including those harbouring blaNDM-1 shared genetic similarities as well as an apparent geographical distinctiveness. Conclusion: The predominance of ESBL production and the occurrence of blaNDM-1 in plasmid-bearing isolates observed in our study corroborate the worldwide drug-resistance scenario. This study thus warrants the need for constant surveillance in the face of sparse information available in Kerala State on the emerging drug resistance in clinical bacteria.

Antioxidant potential of peel Extracts of Banana Varieties (<i>Musa sapientum</i>)

The study has been aimed to evaluate and compare phytochemical content and the antioxidant activity in peel extracts of nine local varieties of banana, i.e. Musa sapientum species. Ethanolic extract of peels of these varieties were subjected to in vitro free radical scavenging assays like DppH, ABTS and lipid peroxidation inhibition assay. Total antioxidant capacity assay to confirm the antioxidant potential and phytochemical content such as total phenols, flavonoids were also determined. The results obtained were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and DMRT analysis. The peel ex- tracts of all the nine varieties of banana exhibited significant antioxidant and phytochemical activities with Musa spp – Blueggoe (Monthan) - AAB and Musa spp – Rasthali – AAB showing highest free radical scavenging activity and Musa spp – Karpooravalli – ABB, Musa spp – Rasthali – AAB, Musa spp - Ney poovan (Kadali) – AB and Musa spp – Mysore (poovan) – AAB having highest phytochemical content. The study suggests that peel extracts of these banana varieties could be useful to combat free radical mediated diseases.
