Semen Quality in the General population of Bulgaria

Background: With the accumulating evidence of semen difference between distinct populations we decided to conduct a population-based prospective study to assess the reproductive capabilities of the Bulgarian males. Objective: To evaluate the semen parameters in men from the general population of Bulgaria. To analyze the effects of BMI (Body mass index) and tobacco smoking on semen characteristics. Methods: 482 males without history of reproductive problems were included for the purpose of this study. The duration of our study was from April to May in 2016 and April in 2017. The volunteers were subdivided based on their smoking status and on their BMI. After semen collection, a conventional semen analysis was carried out manually by trained embryologists in an andrology laboratory according to WHO recommendations. The results were statistically analyzed and presented with their mean values. Result(s): After semen analysis we report a mean of 3.29 ml for semen volume, 40.68 × 106/ml for spermatozoa concentration, 128.38 × 106 for total sperm count, 52.54% of total motile spermatozoa in the ejaculate and a mean percentage of morphologically normal sperm standing at 9.6%. We did not find a negative effect of tobacco smoking on semen quality;however higher BMI is associated with lower sperm concentration per ml. Discussion and Conclusion(s): This is the first contemporary study, assessing semen quality in Bulgarians. The results obtained here show the lower quality of semen in Bulgaria, compared to other countries. No statistical differences were found between the semen quality of nonsmokers and smokers. Higher BMI was found to be associated with lower sperm concentration per milliliter.

Novel, self-associating hybrid copolymers were synthesized via controlled ring-opening polymerization of N-carboxyanhydride of Z-L-lysine (Z-L-Lys-NCA), initiated by amino-functional macroinitiators. A poly(N-isopropylacry-lamide) (pNIpAm)-based macroinitiator containing 10 mol% of polyoxyethylene grafts and a terminal primary amine group in the form of ammonium hydrochloride (pNIpAm-g-pEО) was synthesized and used to initiate the ammonium- mediated ring-opening polymerization of NCA described by Dimitrov and Schlaad [1]. Thus, hybrid copolymers ((pNIpAm-g-pEO)-b-pLys) with controlled molar-mass characteristics and functionality were obtained. The potential applications of pNIpAm-based copolymers in the systems for controlled drug release, immobilization of enzymes and protein purification have aroused great interest in the studies of their properties and behaviour. The thermal stability and thermodynamic properties of the copolymers obtained were studied. The differential thermal analysis of polyfunctional hybrid copolymers (pNIpAm-g-pEO)-b-pLys) showed that thermooxidative destruction occurs in two stages: primary, of the unstable fragments (grafted chains of pEO);and secondary, of the main polymer chains of poly(N-isopropylacry-lamide) and poly(L-lysine). The kinetics of thermal degradation was evaluated and the values of the activation energy of the degradation process, changes of Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy for the formation of the activated complex were also calculated.

Microcystins cause acute hepatotoxicity and chronic liver tumor promotion. This study presents the results of HpLC DAD analyses and their LC-MS confirmation of samples from five Bulgarian water bodies (reservoirs Stoudena, pchelina, Bistritsa and lakes Dourankoulak, Vaya). The total concentration of microcystins in water samples ranged from 0.1 to 26.5 μg/l. The amount of microcystins in the biomasses ranged from 11.4 to 49.6 μg/g (d.w.). The high percent of positive samples in which the most toxic microcystin-LR is recorded, can serve as a strong alarm for the necessity of a serious study and relevant discussion of the problem with responsible authorities at national level.

This paper presented some development problems and solutions concerning the parallel implementation of an algebraic method for XML data processing. The proposed parallel algorithm first partitions the XML document into chunks and then apply the parallel model to process each chunk of XML tree. The authors suggest a different point of view about XML parsers with the creation of advanced algebraic processor (including all necessary software tools, search techniques and programming modules). The possibilities of this linear algebraic model, combined with principles of parallel programming allow efficient solutions for parsing, search and manipulation over semi-structured data with hierarchical structures. Thus presented paper combines the building of an algebraic formalism for navigation over XML hierarchy with concepts of modern XML parser and their mutual work in parallel. The presented tests show higher rapidity and low consumption of resources in comparison with some existing commercial XML parsers.

persistent anomalous vitreo-macular adhesion(VMA) is a well-known factor, associated with a variety of sight threatening diseases- including macular hole, vitreo-macular traction syndrome, cystoid and diabetic macular edema, exudative age- related macular degeneration, myopic traction maculopathy and others. With the advent of optical coherence tomography our understanding of these pathologies and the ability of their early diagnosis has gone much far in the past two decades. The release of macular traction has been of exclusive surgical capability. Notwithstanding good results, vitrectomy is hampered by the inability of complete vitreo-retinal separation(i.e., smooth, bare internal limiting membrane), compulsory postoperative positioning in macular hole cases, surgical complications, and high costs. With aim to offer less invasive and safe treatment modality for anomalous VMA, investigators have made enormous progress in the past decade. Leading among the studied nonsurgical measures is the intravitreal application of pharmacologic agents for the induction of vitreo-retinal separation and vitreous liquefaction, a method termed pharmacologic vitreolysis. Several vitreolytic agents have been studied to date, the most potent among them proved to be plasmin. Recently, ocriplasmin(formerly known as microplasmin)- a more stable than plasmin recombinant product, proved to be safe and efficient in releasing VMA in large studies, and consequently received FDA approval. It's role in clinical practice is now in the process of being determined. This paper aims to review and summarize the current knowledge and status of investigation on this new approach for the treatment of VMA.

Studies on Feeding Habits and parasitological Status of Red Fox, Golden Jackal, Wild Cat and Stone Marten in Sredna Gora, Bulgaria

In order to define the role of wild carnivores in the epidemiology of parasitoses with veterinary and medical importance their parasitological status and feeding habits were studied. In the period 2001-2006 the feeding habits of 167 foxes, 78 jackals, 40 wild cats and 23 stone martens from the area of Sredna Gora, Bulgaria were investigated. 113 of the foxes, 56 of the jackals, 22 of the wild cats and 21 of the martens were subjected to helminthological study. 147 wild boars and 26 badgers from the same area were subjected to trichinelloscopy. Rodents were the main food of the wild cats (82.7%), martens (52%) and foxes (50%). The main food of the jackals was carrion from domestic and wild animals (79.5%). 95.5% of the foxes, 100% of the jackals, 95.5% of the wild cats and 89% of the stone martens were infected with one or more helminth species. The prevalence of the most important helminths: Trichinella spp., Taenia spp. and Ancylostoma spp. was high in all carnivores examined. In the infected with Trichinella spp. animals only T. britovi was demonstrated. The wild boars and badgers were not infected with Trichinella spp. The correlation between the feeding habits and parasitological status is discussed.

Effects of carob-bean gum thickened formulas on infants' reflux and tolerance indices

AIM: To examine the effect of carob-bean gum(CBG) thickened-formulas on reflux and tolerance indices in infants with gastro-esophageal reflux(GER). METHODS: Fifty-six eligible infants(1-6 mo old) were randomly allocated to receive for two weeks a formula with either 0.33 g/100 m L(Formula A) or 0.45 g/100 m L(Formula B) of cold soluble CBG galactomannans respectively, or a formula with 0.45 g/100 m L of hot soluble CBG galactomannans(Formula C). No control group receiving standard formula was included in the study. Data on the following indices were obtained both at baseline and follow-up from all study participants: 24 h esophageal p H monitoring indices, anthropometrical indices(i.e., body weight and length) and tolerance indices(i.e., frequency of colics; type and frequency ofdefecations). From the eligible infants, forty seven were included in an intention-to-treat analysis to examine the effects of the two-week trial on esophageal 24 h p H monitoring, growth and tolerance indices. Repeated Measures ANOVA was used to examine the research ***: Regarding changes in 24 h p H monitoring indices, significant decreases from baseline to followup were observed in the "Boix Ochoa Score"(i.e., an index of esophageal acid exposure), in the total number of visible refluxes and in all symptoms related indices due to acid reflux only for infants provided with Formula A, while no significant changes were observed for infants provided with Formulas B and C. In addition, the significant decreases observed in two symptoms related p H monitoring indices(i.e., "Symptom index for reflux" and "percentage of all reflux") for infants provided with Formula A were also found to differentiate significantly compared to the changes observed in the other two groups(p = 0.048 and p = 0.014 respectively). Concerning changes in anthropometric indices, body weight significantly increased among infants provided with Formulas A and C, but not for infants provided with Formula B. As
