the Asian Forum for polar Sciences: An assessment of regional cooperation

this paper presents a review of the current status of Asian countries' relations with Antarctica, aimed at deepening understanding of the role of the Asian Forum for polar Sciences(AFopS) in the area covered under the Antarctic treaty. the paper critically examines the current situation regarding the Asian presence in Antarctica and provides a historical outline of the AFo pS. Whereas the activities of individual Asian countries in Antarctica have been extensively analyzed in previous studies, those of the AFopS constitute a research gap within the scholarly literature. therefore, an assessment of the role of the AFopS within the wider Antarctic region from both the policy and scientific perspectives is necessary to better understand its relationship with other international organizations that are active in the area covered by the Antarctic treaty. Over the course of its relatively short history, the AFopS has accomplished a number of achievements. these include the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Arctic Science Committee and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research. Additionally, collaborative activities have been undertaken by members of the Forum, entailing, for example, exchanges of personnel, cooperation and support extended within scientific projects. Consequently, AFo pS member countries that traditionally lack a polar background, such as thailand and Vietnam, have been able to conduct scientific activities in Antarctica.

We review recent developments on the synthesis and properties of two-dimensional materials which, although being mainly of an sp^(2) bonding character, exhibit highly disordered, non-uniform and structurally random morphologies. the emergence of such class of amorphous materials, including amorphous graphene and boron nitride, have shown superior properties compared to their crystalline counterparts when used as interfacial films. In this paper we discuss their structural,vibrational and electronic properties and present a perspective of their use for electronic applications.

Assessing spatial variability and erosion susceptibility of soils in hilly agricultural areas in Southern Italy

Soil erosion is one of the main environmental problems in the Mediterranean *** problem is becoming even more important especially in Italy,in the Apennines,where severe erosive processes occur due to the action of concentrated running *** erodibility(K-Factor)of a soil,estimated using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation(RUSLE),is a measure of its susceptibility to erosion and depends on several soil properties such as organic matter,texture and permeability and *** assess the spatial variability of soil properties and soil erodibility in hilly agricultural areas and to investigate the relationships between soil features and landscape morphodynamics,a detailed study in Molise region(southern Italy),in a small drainange basin located along its hilly Adriatic flank,was carried *** this catchment,63 topsoil samples(A horizons)were collected and 10 soil profiles,forming a catena crossing 3 land units,were *** calculated K-Factors ranges between 0.012 and 0.048 t ha h ha-1 MJ-1 mm-1 indicating a complex spatial distribution,due to the several local pedological and geomorphological factors affecting soil *** results give clear evidence about the relationships among soil characteristics,soil erodibility and landscape morpho-dynamics(land units).Comparing the soil loss rates estimated for the study area with those reported in literature,a good correspondence can be observed only for the more stable land unit,not characterized by intense erosive *** proposed methodology is suitable to highlight areas characterized by similar morphodynamics features,and comparable soil erodibility,for a more effective spatialization of K factor.

Hybrid Short-term Load Forecasting Method Based on Empirical Wavelet transform and Bidirectional Long Short-term Memory Neural Networks

Accurate short-term load forecasting is essential to modern power systems and smart grids. the utility can better implement demand-side management and operate power system stably with a reliable load forecasting system. the load demand contains a variety of different load components, and different loads operate with different frequencies. the conventional load forecasting methods, e.g., linear regression(LR), auto-regressive integrated moving average(ARIMA), deep neural network, ignore the frequency domain and can only use time-domain load demand as inputs. to make full use of both time-domain and frequency-domain features of the load demand, a load forecasting method based on hybrid empirical wavelet transform(EWt) and deep neural network is proposed in this paper. the proposed method first filters noises via wavelet-based denoising technique, and then decomposes the original load demand into several sub-layers to show the frequency features while the time-domain information is preserved as well. then, a bidirectional long short-term memory(LStM) method is trained for each sub-layer independently. In order to better tune the hyperparameters, a Bayesian hyperparameter optimization(BHO) algorithm is adopted in this paper. three case studies are designed to evaluate the performance of the proposed *** the results, it is found that the proposed method improves the prediction accuracy compared with other load forecasting method.

the initial-boundary value problem for a general balance law in a bounded domain is proved to be well posed. Indeed, we show the existence of an entropy solution, its uniqueness and its Lipschitz continuity as a function of time, of the initial datum and of the boundary datum. the proof follows the general lines in [4], striving to provide a rigorous treatment and detailed references.
