Seasonal changes in Hermit Thrush (catharus guttatus) song syntax

In many songbird sp.c.es,birdsong features phonological syntax,meaning that the units within their vocal se-quences are ordered in a non-random way that adheres to a *** such syntactical patterns have been richly described in many sp.c.es,comparatively little is known about how those patterns contribute to song achieving its important *** each of song’s main functions,territorial defense and mate attraction,evidence of a role for syntax is *** sp.c.es for which syntax has been thoroughly described is the Hermit Thrush(catharus guttatus),which presents song types from their repertoires in a semi-predictable order and,in doing so,rapidly cycle up and down the frequency *** objective of the present study was to explore the importance of song syntax in the Hermit Thrush through a within-subject examination of how measures of syntax,such as the predictability of song type order within song sequences,shift over the breeding *** hypothesized that,if such syntactical characteristics are important to breeding behaviour,they would be most prominent at the start of the breeding season when activity associated with territory establishment and mate attraction is most *** revealed that,as predicted,the rigidness of song type ordering within se-quences was highest at the start of the season and declined *** song type sequences were most predictable at the vitally important early part of the breeding season fit our hypothesis that this asp.c. of song syntax is important to song’s functions related to territory establishment and/or mate *** work will clarify whether that role relates to one of song’s two main functions or serves song transmission in some broader way.

cO oxidation under lean and stoichiometric conditions over ceriazirconia with very low metal contents(cu,co,Ag and pt)

In this work,several ceria-zirconia based catalysts with very lo w（and equimolar） metal contents were prepared,characterised and tested for the cO oxidatio n reaction（under lean and stoichiometric conditions）,trying to emulate those conditions found in a diesel oxidation catalyst（DOc） system from a diesel engine and those encountered under gasoline exhaust（λ=1）.The metals chosen are cu,co,Ag and pt（as a reliable benchmark）.The results reveal enormous differences among reducibility and catalytic activity despite quite similar structural and textural properties of the catalysts,showing differences among dispersion（Ag-catalyst seems to present a low level of dispersion）.This catalyst seems to be characterised,as well,by a strong electronic interaction between ce and Ag centres which is suggested to yield an improved reducibility under H2-TpR ***,the order in catalytic activity（cu>Ag>co≈pt>>support） seems not to follow the order found in reducibility and the cu-catalyst seems to be the most active independently on the reaction conditions,yielding nearly overlapped cO oxidation catalytic *** restingly,a stro ng correlation between the catalytic activity under the two conditions tested and the OSc values of the ce0.8Zr0.2O2-supported metal catalysts is ***,OSc parameter measured at 150℃ can be used as a relevant descriptor to evaluate the cO oxidation activity at low and medium conversions for the investigated catalysts,much better than the H2-TpR measurements.

We have recently proposed a new technique of plasma tailoring by laser-driven hydrodynamic shockwaves generated on both sides of a gas jet[Marquès et al.,*** 28,023103(2021)].In a continuation of this numerical work,we study experimentally the influence of the tailoring on proton acceleration driven by a high-intensity p.c.second laser in three cases:without tailoring,by tailoring only the entrance side of the p.c.second laser,and by tailoring both sides of the gas *** tailoring,the acceleration is transverse to the laser axis,with a low-energy exponential sp.c.rum,produced by coulomb *** the front side of the gas jet is tailored,a forward acceleration appears,which is significantly enhanced when both the front and back sides of the plasma are *** forward acceleration produces higher-energy protons,with a peaked sp.c.rum,and is in good agreement with the mechanism of collisionless shock acceleration(cSA).The spatiotemporal evolution of the plasma profile is characterized by optical shadowgraphy of a probe *** refraction and absorption of this beam are simulated by post-processing 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the plasma *** with the experimental results allows estimation of the thickness and near-critical density of the plasma slab produced by tailoring both sides of the gas *** parameters are in good agreement with those required for cSA.

Outcomes following minimally invasive dorsal cheilectomy for hallux rigidus:A systematic review

BAcKGROUND cheilectomy of the 1^(st)metatarsophalangeal joint(MTpJ)is one of the most common procedures for the management of hallux ***,there is no consensus regarding outcomes following minimally invasive dorsal cheilectomy(MIDc)for the management of hallux *** To evaluate outcomes following MIDc for the management of hallux *** During November 2023,the pubMed,EMBASE and cochrane Library databases were systematically reviewed to identify clinical studies examining outcomes following MIDc for the management of hallux *** Six studies were *** total,348 patients(370 feet)underwent MIDc for hallux rigidus at a weighted mean follow-up of 37.9±16.5 *** distribution of patients by coughlin and Shurna's classification was recorded in 4 studies as follows:Ⅰ(58 patients,27.1%),Ⅱ(112 patients,52.3%),Ⅲ(44 patients,20.6%).Three studies performed an additional 1^(st)MTpJ arthroscopy and debridement following *** intra-articular bone debris was observed in 100%of patients in 1 *** weighted mean American orthopedic foot and ankle society score improved from a preoperative score of 68.9±3.2 to a postoperative score of *** complication rate was 8.4%,the most common of which was persistent joint pain and ***-two failures(8.7%)were ***-three secondary procedures(8.9%)were performed at a weighted mean time of 8.6±3.2 months following the index *** This systematic review demonstrated improvements in subjective clinical outcomes together with a moderate complication rate following MIDc for the management of hallux rigidus at short-term follow-up.A moderate reoperation rate at short-term follow-up was *** marked heterogeneity between included studies and paucity of high quality comparative studies limits the generation of any robust conclusions.

A large fire of 233 ha in Huascarán National park in peru provided an opportunity to compare plant and bird responses in burned and nearby unburned zones of the puna. Heights and live diameters of flagship puya raimondii rosettes(assigned to four broad developmental phases), plant communities(66 sp.c.es in 24 families and nine growth forms) and bird communities(77 sp.c.es in six trophic guilds) were monitored after the fire. Although no mortality was observed, puya raimondii plants were affected by the fire, losing approximately 60% of their photosynthetic area across all developmental phases, but recovered quickly during the first two years after fire. The comparison of puya rosette recovery after fire was complicated by the changes in live rosette diameter for unburned plants, which showed plasticity of photosynthetic area linked to seasonal and annual fluctuations in precipitation in this relatively dry environment(decreased by 26% for mature adult plants over the study period). Fire caused an immediate change in the density, biomass and composition of vegetation. Although the sp.c.es present remained similar, their abundances changed significantly immediately after the fire, with notable reductions in dominant tussock grasses. This provided opportunities for other plants, resulting in higher postfire diversity of plant sp.c.es, genera, families and growth forms. In turn, the changes in vegetation after fire affected the composition of birds according to their trophic guild. Granivores largely disappeared,generalists were mostly unaffected, and other guilds showed a more complex response. As the vegetation recovered, most displaced birds returned within approximately one year.
