Localization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals in surface soil of Asia’s oldest oil and gas drilling site in Assam,northeast India:Implications for the bio-economy

The environmental influx of hazardous contaminants viz pAHs and HMs occurs due to oil and gas drilling,and processing of petroleum products in industrial facilities and *** problem plagues crude oil drilling sites as pAHs are an essential component of and HMs coexist with crude *** analyzed the spatial distribution of 16 pAHs and 8 HMs in 10 contaminated sites of Assam,a state in *** included Digboi,where crude oil was drilled in 1867 and the first oil well in Asia that was ***Ʃ16 pAHs in soil were detected with a minimum of 13.48 and a maximum of 86.3 mgkg1 andƩ8 heavy metal concentrations in the soil ranged between 69.51 and 336.06 mgkg1.A negative correlation was detected between the relative concentrations of pAHs and *** results confirmed that the nonbiodegradable nature of HMs made them stay in the soil for longer periods of *** our study,we found that the levels of lead,copper,nickel,and chromium(total)in soil were 73.62,11.86,58.97 and 158.66 mgkg*** recovery percentage for pAHs and HMs were in the range of 67e97%and 90e95%*** distribution indices for phenanthrene/Anthracene,Naphthalene/Acenapthhylene,Chyrsene/Benzo(g,h,i)perylene and Fluranthene/pyrene)calculated for soil samples indicated that the spatial distribution of pAHs in soil is uneven which might be due to variations in contaminates disseminated in *** regionalized concentration has serious implications on the bio-economy both in terms of health and economy,especially since the proximity of crude oil sites to paddy fields and/or tea plantations uniquely marks the landscape of upper Assam.

Investigation of flow behavior of crude oils with emphasis to upper Assam Basin,India

This paper attempts to investigate the viscoelastic nature of eight Crude Oil(CO)samples from the Upper Assam Basin,*** was studied using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis(DMA)where shear stress was applied to the CO samples and the resulting displacement(shear strain)was *** transportation through pipelines face serious problems due to their high pour(pp)point and *** this work,Dynamic Modulus(G*)was calculated using which the storage and the loss modulus were determined to study the elastic and viscous nature of the samples at 30C as the average pour point(pp)of the CO samples was near 30***,especially during the extreme winter season in Assam,when the ambient temperature falls drastically,the lighter components come out from the liquid and precipitates in the inner wall of the pipeline which affects the flow through the ***,a better understanding of the flow behavior of CO is very important as this will help to identify whether flow improving methods are required or ***,in this work viscoelastic properties of the CO samples were investigated from where yield point was *** points or the Yield point(Yp)of the samples were determined to understand the flow characteristics before and after the crossover *** the CO samples were observed to be viscous after the yield point except for two CO *** stress and yield strain of the samples were calculated from the Yp,which exhibited non-Newtonian behavior with maximum yield stress up to *** reaching the Yp,the CO samples showed the dominance of viscous nature over elastic nature except for two *** tangent or tan q was also calculated to validate the viscoelasticity of the *** study was done to investigate the flow behavior of CO samples of the Upper Assam Basin for pipeline transportation.

polymer flooding and its effects on enhanced oil recovery special reference to Upper Assam Basin

Chemical Enhance oil Recovery(CEOR)technology is getting more attention since energy crises are getting worse and *** application of polymer flooding depends on the evaluation of rheological and solution properties of injected slug at reservoir conditions,which is function of polymer concentration,salinity,temperature and shear *** acryl amide(pAM)is commonly used polymer in polymer flooding ***,comparative study with other polymers such as xanthan gum(XG)is required while selection of appropriate polymer for *** present study,the recovery efficiency of pAM and XG as a polymer has been evaluated for application as chemical EOR agent for tertiary phase polymer flooding in Upper Assam *** comparative study between pAM and XG has been done in terms of rheological *** flooding experiment of polymer flooding has also been tested to determine the recovery efficiency of the pAM and XG polymer *** results showed that these polymers exhibit favorable salt tolerance,temperature resistance,and recoverable viscosity after shearing,reasonable thickening behavior and improved viscosity enhancement properties due to presence of hydrophobic association in the polymer main *** flooding experiment of polymer flooding has also been tested to determine the recovery efficiency of the pAM and XG polymer *** show that macroscopic sweep efficiency is the dominant factor during *** an injection of hydrogel polymer to the reservoir is to increase a viscosity of fluid containing water so that the fluid is more difficult to flow than the oil,and as a result,the oil production *** thinning behavior was observed in case of pAM indicating predominance of the frontal advance *** pAM seems to be following both piston like movement and frontal advance theory it can be efficiently enhancing the macroscopic sweep efficiency as well as microscopic displacement *** overall

Chlorophenols, typically 4-chlorophenols are highly toxic and non-biodegradable organic contaminants which pose serious threat to the environment, particularly when released into aqueous medium. The removal of these pollutants by efficient method has received worldwide concern in recent past. A new Fe3O4–Cr2O3 magnetic nanocomposite was synthesized by wet chemical method under ultrasonic irradiation. Microstructure and morphology of the nanocomposite were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction（XRD）,Fourier transform infrared（FT-IR）, and a transmission electron microscope（TEM）. Magnetic and optical properties were studied by a vibrating sample magnetometer（VSM） and an ultraviolet–visible（UV–Vis） spectrophotometer respectively. The magnetic nanocomposite（MNC） was used as photocatalyst for effective decomposition of 4-chlorophenol in water under ultraviolet（UV） irradiation.

Spatial Variability and Radiative Impact of Aerosol along the Brahmaputra River Valley in India: Results from a Campaign

The first ever land campaign to study the spatial variability of the aerosol characteristics along the Brahmaputra river valley (BRV) in Assam, North-Eastern India, was conducted during 2011. Measurements were made over 13 locations for Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), scattering coefficient, particulate matter, black carbon (BC) concentration and meteorological parameters. The BRV is divided into three sectors longitudinally viz western sector (WS), central sector (CS), and eastern sector (ES). Significant Spatial heterogeneity in AOD and BC concentration was observed (p pM2.5 category along the entire valley. The Angstrom coefficient measured using different wavelength pairs showed spatial variability indicating dominance of fine particles over WS and coarse particles in ES with a probable bimodal distribution. The scattering and absorption coefficient shows dominance of both types of aerosol over WS than other areas. The shortwave radiative forcing was higher over the WS than CS and ES of the valley. The campaign revealed that under favorable wind conditions, the BRV is loaded with significant amount of natural and anthropogenic aerosol during local winter and is influenced by the long-range transport of aerosols from the Indo-Gangetic plain.

SO<sub>2</sub>Oxidation Efficiency patterns during an Episode of plume Transport over Northeast India: Implications to an OH Minimum

Systematic monitoring of the fluctuations in atmospheric SO2 oxidation efficiency—measured as a molar ratio of SO42- to total SOx (SOx=SO2+SO42-), referred as S-ratio—have been performed during a major long range plume transport to northeast India (Shillong: 25.67°N, 91.91°E, 1064 m ASL) in March 2009. Anomalously low S-ratios (median, 0.03) were observed during the episode—associated with a cyclonic circulation—and the SO42- and SO2 exhibited unusual features in the ‘relative phase’ of their peaks. During initial days, when SO2 levels were dictated by the long range influx, the SO42- and SO2 variabilities were in anti-phase—for the differing mobility/loss mechanisms. When SO2 levels were governed by the boundary layer diurnality in the latter days, the anti-phase is explained by a ‘depleted OH level’—major portion being consumed in the initial period by the elevated SO2 and other pollutants. Simulations with a global 3D chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem (v8-03-01), also indicated ‘suppressed oxidation conditions’—with characteristic low S-ratios and poor phase agreements. The modelled OH decreased steadily from the initial days, and OH normalized to SO2—referred as OHspecific—was consistently low during the ‘suppressed S-ratio period’. Further, the geographical distribution of modelled OH showed a pronounced minimum over the region surrounding (20°N, 95°E) spanning parts of northeast India and the adjacent regions to the southeast of it—prevalent throughout the year, though the magnitude and the area of influence have a seasonality to it—with significant implications for reducing the oxidizing power of the regional atmosphere. A second set of measurements during January 2010—when prominent long range transports were absent—exhibited no anomalies, and the S-ratios were well within the acceptable limits (median, 0.32).
