A field experiment was conducted in the Low-Country of Sri Lanka,during the period 1994 to 1995 to investigate weed seedbank density in soil and severity of weed infestation and growth of tea in relation to weed management methods during early tea *** weeding at various intervals was compared with the use of various herbicides,with and without *** seedbanks were determined using "seed germination method" and "Malone’s seed extraction method" before and 12 months after imposition of *** were reduced marginally(6%) (p>0.05) with the use of herbicides,but increased(40%) when manual weeding was less frequent than six week *** ammonium at 0.2 kg *** and 2,4-D at 0.94 kg *** followed by at 0.17 paraquat kg *** were less effective in weed control and had little influence on reducing seedbank *** control with herbicides was superior to that of manual weeding(pbicide treatments affected tea growth similarly,but the former was not cost *** agronomic nor economic advantage was achieved with manual weeding at two-week *** allowed to remain weedy for 12 weeks or more adversely affected tea *** of oxyfluorfen at 0.29 kg *** followed by paraquat at 0.17 kg *** or glyphosate at 0.99 kg *** was more cost effective and superior to manual weeding(pppings(at 38 ***) was more beneficial for tea than not mulching,whilst a live mulch of weeds suppressed tea growth.A combination of mulching and chemicals followed by manual weeding at 10-week intervals would appear to be the most appropriate integrated weed management system during establishment of young tea.

A preventive control strategy for static voltage stability based on an efficient power plant model of electric vehicles

With the increasing integration of wind farms and electric vehicles(EVs)in power systems,voltage stability is becoming more and more *** on vehicle-to-grid(V2G),an efficient power plant model of EVs(E-Epp)was developed to estimate EV charging load with available corresponding response capacity under different charging strategies.A preventive control strategy based on E-Epp was proposed to maintain the static voltage stability margin(VSM)of power system above a predefined security *** control modes were used including the disconnection of EV charging load(‘V1G’mode)and the discharge of stored battery energy back to power grid(‘V2G’mode).A modified IEEE 14-bus system with high penetration of wind power and EVs was used to verify the effectiveness of preventive control *** results showed that the proposed strategy can not only improve the static voltage stability of power system with considerable wind generation,but also guarantee the travelling comfort for EV owners.

Advances in Information provision from Wireless Sensor Networks for Irrigated Crops

Current advances in connected sensor technologies for near real-time environmental monitoring are transforming the quality of information provision to land managers. This “Third Industrial Revolution” that connects digital sensor data analytics with adaptive services aims to transform data processing for timely decision support. The information is needed to improve irrigation scheduling, because global demand for food relies heavily on irrigation and global freshwater resources are diminishing. previously, practitioners used visual indicators, infrequent measurements or predictive water balance models to estimate irrigation schedules. Visual indicators and infrequent measurements are approximate, and predictive models require many inputs so that likely cumulative errors cause inaccuracies in scheduling. In contrast, wireless sensor networks enable near real-time continuous measurement of soil moisture at targeted positions providing the site-specific information required for precision irrigation scheduling and efficient freshwater management. This paper describes and compares the structure, build and implementation of Crossbow, DigiMesh, and LoRa systems to deliver information on spatio-temporal soil water status and crop stress to practitioners over smart phones and webpages to improve management of irrigated land. Our study found that the newer LoRA system has advantages over the other systems, especially on flat land, with furthest node range of >10 km and advanced communication protocols that can penetrate dense vegetation. The mesh networking of the DigiMesh and Crossbow systems was preferred in hilly terrain to communicate around hills, and allows easy expansion of the network. The Crossbow system is simpler to install but presents difficulties for third party sensor integration. All systems allowed a step change in our ability to track dynamic changes in soil hydraulic properties and crop stress, to improve irrigation water use efficiency.

Development of a marketable rice based herbal porridge suitable for diabetics from Scoparia dulcis

Consumption of herbal leafy porridges is a reputed dietary remedy among Sri Lankans in treating diabetes. The aim of the study was to develop a rice based herbal porridge [rice: fresh leaves: scraped coconut kernel 13 - 15: 25 - 30: 10 - 13 (w/w/w)] commercially with Scopariadulcis leaves which has proven antidiabetic effects and low GI (fresh porridge) which benefits diabetics. Two porridges with the same ingredient ratio were produced with different particle sizes. porridge produced with 100% fine particles (extruded rice, leaves and scraped coconut mixed with rice powder) elicited a high GI for normal (92 ± 22) and diabetic (97 ± 20) subjects. The second porridge prepared with the minimum amount of extruded rice with other ingredients mixed with boiled and dried intact rice grains had a medium GI (normal 58 ± 11, diabetics 61 ± 11). A significant reduction (p peak blood glucose was observed in diabetic subjects for porridge 2 (12.4%) compared to porridge 1 (0.7%) when compared to glucose. The reason could be the significantly high (p0.5 mm) (63%) and minimum amount of extruded fine particles in porridge 2 compared to porridge 1 (1.3%).

Oral cancer (OC) is the most common form of head and neck cancer. Despite the high incidence and unfavourable patient outcomes, currently, there are no biomarkers for the early detection of OC. This study aims to discover, develop, and validate a novel saliva-based microRNA signature for early diagnosis and prediction of OC risk in oral potentially malignant disorders (OpMD).The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) miRNA sequencing data and small RNA sequencing data of saliva samples were used to discover differentially expressed miRNAs. Identified miRNAs were validated in saliva samples of OC (n=50), OpMD (n=52), and controls(n=60) using quantitative real-time pCR. Eight differentially expressed miRNAs (miR-7-5p, miR-10b-5p, miR-182-5p, miR-215-5p,miR-431-5p, miR-486-3p, miR-3614-5p, and miR-4707-3p) were identified in the discovery phase and were validated. The efficiency of our eight-miRNA signature to discriminate OC and controls was:area under curve (AUC):0.954, sensitivity:86%, specificity:90%,positive predictive value (ppV):87.8%and negative predictive value (NpV):88.5%whereas between OC and OpMD was:AUC:0.911,sensitivity:90%, specificity:82.7%, ppV:74.2%and NpV:89.6%. We have developed a risk probability score to predict the presence or risk of OC in OpMD patients. We established a salivary miRNA signature that can aid in diagnosing and predicting OC,revolutionising the management of patients with OpMD. Together, our results shed new light on the management of OC by salivary miRNAs to the clinical utility of using miRNAs derived from saliva samples.

利用20年(1992-2012年)的ECCO2模式模拟数据,主要研究了东印度洋(EIO)水体输运的季节变化.在EIO选取3个断面,分别为赤道、80°E和6°N.研究结果表明,跨赤道和80°E的季节输运主体部分大致相补偿.跨赤道的大部分水体输运局限在上层100 m,80°E的水体输运具有复杂结构,与显著的季风流、Wyrtki Jets(WJs)、赤道潜流(EUC)等有关.6°N上层水体净输运较小,但存在较强的边界流和相对较弱的内区流.纬向流的显著变化发生在80°E.在季风盛行季节,由于WJs减弱,赤道附近的水体输运以西向的梯度流为主,上层100 m的其余区域则主要受季风流控制.同样,由于EUC减弱,西向的梯度流与次表层东向的EUC之间也存在转换.在季风转换季节,季风流减弱,WJs与EUC分别在上层100 m和次表层占主导地位.此外,本研究还讨论了与季风流、WJs和EUC相关的盐水和暖水交换,有助于了解研究区域内温度和盐度的水平和垂直结构.
