Deep foundations are currently used in engineering practice to solve problems caused by weak geotechnical characteristics of the ground.Impact pile driving is an interesting and viable solution from economic and technical points of view.However,it is necessary to ensure that the environmental drawbacks,namely ground-borne vibration,are adequately met.For this purpose,the authors propose an axisymmetric finite element method-perfectly matched layer(FEM-pML)approach,where the nonlinear behavior of the soil is addressed through an equivalent linear methodology.Given the complexity of the problem,an experimental test site was developed and fully characterized.The experimental work comprised in-situ and laboratory soil characterization,as well as the measurement of vibrations induced during pile driving.The comparison between experimental and numerical results demonstrated a very good agreement,from which it can be concluded that the proposed numerical approach is suitable for the prediction of vibrations induced by impact pile driving.The experimental database is available as supplemental data and may be used by other researchers in the validation of their prediction models.

Colorectal cancer(CRC)is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide,being the third most commonly diagnosed malignancy and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally.Despite the progress in screening,early diagnosis,and treatment,approximately 20%-25%of CRC patients still present with metastatic disease at the time of their initial diagnosis.Furthermore,the burden of disease is still expected to increase,especially in individuals younger than 50 years old,among whom early-onset CRC incidence has been increasing.Screening and early detection are pivotal to improve CRC-related outcomes.It is well established that CRC screening not only reduces incidence,but also decreases deaths from CRC.Diverse screening strategies have proven effective in decreasing both CRC incidence and mortality,though variations in efficacy have been reported across the literature.However,uncertainties persist regarding the optimal screening method,age intervals and periodicity.Moreover,adherence to CRC screening remains globally low.In recent years,emerging technologies,notably artificial intelligence,and non-invasive biomarkers,have been developed to overcome these barriers.However,controversy exists over the actual impact of some of the new discoveries on CRC-related outcomes and how to effectively integrate them into daily practice.In this review,we aim to cover the current evidence surrounding CRC screening.We will further critically assess novel approaches under investigation,in an effort to differentiate promising inno-vations from mere novelties.

Brain dysfunctions and neurotoxicity induced by psychostimulants in experimental models and humans:an overview of recent findings

preclinical and clinical studies indicate that psychostimulants,in addition to having abuse potential,may elicit brain dysfunctions and/or neurotoxic effects.Central toxicity induced by psychostimulants may pose serious health risks since the recreational use of these substances is on the rise among young people and adults.The present review provides an overview of recent research,conducted between 2018 and 2023,focusing on brain dysfunctions and neurotoxic effects elicited in experimental models and humans by amphetamine,cocaine,methamphetamine,3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine,methylphenidate,caffeine,and nicotine.Detailed elucidation of factors and mechanisms that underlie psychostimulant-induced brain dysfunction and neurotoxicity is crucial for understanding the acute and enduring noxious brain effects that may occur in individuals who use psychostimulants for recreational and/or therapeutic purposes.

Since the early stages of life on earth,cellular metabolism has evolved to adapt to fluctuations in nutrient and oxygen availability.In this context,mammals,which are probably the organisms that show one of the highest levels of metabolic complexity,have developed an elegant system that uses constant and rechargeable energy sources of modulate their metabolism.This homeostasis is especially important in the central nervous system,as neurons and other cells in the brain are highly susceptible to fluctuations in nutrients and oxygen availability.

Organisms sense and respond to environmental and developmental signals to drive adaptive responses(Kefauver et al.,2020;Yu et al.,2024).These stimuli can be mainly divided into physical and chemical stimuli,and the physical stimuli include light,temperature,sound,vibration,pressure,stretch,shear stress,osmotic stress,and substrate deformation.Some of these physical stimuli trigger physical forces and alter membrane tension,which in turn activates mechanosensitive channels(MsCs)and converts the mechanical cues into biochemical signals.

Intraoperative ultrasonography(IOUS)in hepatobiliary surgery is well known as an essential tool for radical and safe hepatectomies,allowing to perform parenchymal sparing surgery and,as consequence,to expand the surgical indications for patients otherwise considered unresectable.Nevertheless,since many years,despite its effectiveness in the study of vascular anatomy of the liver,the gold standard for the assessment of biliary anatomy during surgery is intraoperative cholangiography(IOC),which is used for the validation of preoperative imaging as well as for guiding reconstruction in case of bile duct injury or resection.

In crop plants, various environmental stresses affect the balance of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus(C:N:p), leading to biochemical and physiological alterations and reductions in yield. Silicon(Si) is a beneficial element that alleviates plant stress. Most studies involving silicon have focused on physiological responses, such as improvements in photosynthetic processes, water use efficiency, and antioxidant defense systems. But recent research suggests that stressed plants facing either limited or excessive resources(water, light, nutrients, and toxic elements), strategically employ Si to maintain C:N:p homeostasis, thereby minimizing biomass losses. Understanding the role of Si in mitigating the impact of abiotic stresses on plants by regulating C:N:p homeostasis holds great potential for advancing sustainable agricultural practices in crop production. This review presents recent advances in characterizing the influence of environmental stresses on C:N:p homeostasis, as well as the role of Si in preserving C:N:p equilibrium and attenuating biological damage associated with abiotic stress. It underscores the beneficial effects of Si in sustaining C:N:p homeostasis and increasing yield via improved nutritional efficiency and stress mitigation.

Managing inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)is becoming increasingly complex and personalized,considering the advent of new advanced therapies with distinct mechanisms of action.Achieving mucosal healing(MH)is a pivotal therapeutic goal in IBD management and can prevent IBD progression and reduce flares,hospitalization,surgery,intestinal damage,and colorectal cancer.Employing proactive disease and therapy assessment is essential to achieve better control of intestinal inflammation,even if subclinical,to alter the natural course of IBD.periodic monitoring of fecal calprotectin(FC)levels and interval endoscopic evaluations are cornerstones for evaluating response/remission to advanced therapies targeting IBD,assessing MH,and detecting subclinical recurrence.Here,we comment on the article by Ishida et al Moreover,this editorial aimed to review the role of FC and endoscopic scores in predicting MH in patients with IBD.Furthermore,we intend to present some evidence on the role of these markers in future targets,such as histological and transmural healing.Additional prospective multicenter studies with a stricter MH criterion,standardized endoscopic and histopathological analyses,and virtual chromoscopy,potentially including artificial intelligence and other biomarkers,are desired.

Integrated grain cropping systems promote soil health(SH)and sustainability.Microbial biomass and activity(MBA)and community structure(MCS)are key to SH.Integration of maize with Urochloa pastures strongly impacts MBA and MCS.MBA is more sensitive than MCS to shifts in grain cropping systems.Systems under continuous Urochloa increased microbial activity and AMF abundance.Tropical soils are prone to degradation.Adoption of conservation agricultural practices is essential to improve soil health,which is influenced by soil microbes.In this study we analyzed shifts in microbial biomass and activity(MBA)and microbial community structure(MCS)based on fatty acid methyl esthers(FAMEs)between five no-till agricultural practices:maize monoculture(MM);maize annualy intercropped with Urochloa decumbens(M/Ud);M/Ud with soybean rotation every other year(M/Ud-S);M/Ud keeping the pasture for the next two years(M/Ud-Ud-Ud);and maize intercropped with U.ruziziensis keeping the pasture for the next two years(M/Ur-Ur-Ur).Results indicated that MBA was affected by the inclusion of Urochloa intercropping and by rotation with soybean.Systems under a longer residence time with Urochloa in the field had higherβ-glucosidase activity and soil basal respiration,indicating a greater microbial activity.MCS was less affected than MBA by the investigated cropping systems.MCS changed only in the continuous pasture systems,which were enriched in arbuscular mycorrhyzal fungi(AMF).Additionally,the continuous pasture systems had lower microbial stress ratios than the other agricultural practices.In sum,our study showed that utilization of Urochloa spp.under longer periods in no-till agricultural practices contributes to increase microbial activity,AMF abundance and decrease microbial stress ratio.These changes are primarily beneficial for soil health.
