The high-temp.rature oxidation resistance of the nick.l sup.ralloy grown by the Laser p.wder Bed Fusion (Lp.F) has been significantly increased as a result of in-situ formation of a thermal barrier layer (α-Al2O3+ CaMoO4) during oxidative annealing of surface layers modified by electric sp.rk.treatment (EST). The reactive EST of the Lp.F-built items based on nick.l Ep.41Np.alloy was carried out with low-melting Al-12%Si， Al-6%Ca-0.6%Si and Al-7%Ca-1%Mn electrodes. It was found that at EST done by Al-7%Ca-1%Mn electrode an intermetallic (β-NiAl + γ’-Ni3Al) 15 microns thick.layer reinforced by sp.erical oxide (CaMe)O nanop.rticles was formed. Formation of that structure increases the wear resistance of Lp.F nick.l sup.ralloy by 4.5 times. Further oxidative annealing at 1000 °C lead to a formation of continuous two-layered coating with an inner layer of α-Al2O3and an outer layer of CaMoO4， which together act as an effective barrier p.eventing the diffusion of oxygen into the volume of the sup.ralloy.

The effects of the comp.nents of solution for membrane casting and p.ep.ration conditions on the membrane p.rformances are studied in this p.p.r. p.lyacrylonitrile (p.N) was used as p.lymer and DMAC as solvent. The ultrafiltration (UF) membranes whose cut-off of molecular weight is 150000 and flux of p.re water reaches 150-200 ml/(cm2·h) were p.ep.red by selecting p.op.r comp.nents of solution for membrane casting and membrane p.ep.ration conditions.

To evaluate laboratory germination media, seed germi- nation rates and methodology for both Jatrop.a curcas and p.ngamia p.nnata were counted in different germination medium, such as river sand, quartz sand and vermiculite. The seeds of both sp.cies were sown at 2-cm dep.h of river sand, quartz sand and vermiculite. We evaluated methodologies of seeds of J. curcas and p. p.nnata by ISTA （Interna- tional Seed Testing Association）. The results showed that river sand is the best medium for tree seeds p.anted at 2-cm dep.h of River sand. Vermiculite was second best. On p.p.r media, there were many abnor- mal seedlings and this media were unsuitable for germination of the larger seeds.

Identification of quantitative trait loci （QTLs） for grain mineral elements can assist in faster and more p.ecise develop.ent of micronutrient dense rice varieties through mark.r-assisted breeding. In the p.esent study, QTLs were map.ed for Fe and Zn concentrations in two BC2F3 map.ing p.p.lations derived from the crosses of O. sativa cv Swarna with two different accessions of O. nivara. In all, 10 and 8 QTLs were identified for grain Fe and Zn concentrations in p.p.lation 1, and 7 and 5 QTLs were identified in p.p.lation 2, resp.ctively. Eighty p.rcent of the QTLs detected in both p.p.lations were derived from O. nivara. Five QTLs for Fe and three QTLs for Zn exp.ained more than 15% p.enotyp.c variance either in interval or comp.site interval map.ing. The locations of O. nivara derived QTLs such as qFe2.1, qFe3.1, qFe8.2 and qZn12.1 were consistently identified in both the p.p.lations. Ep.static interaction was observed only between RM106 and RM6 on chromosome 2 and between RM22 and RM7 on chromosome 3 for Fe concentration in p.p.lation 1. Sixteen candidate genes for metal homeostasis were found to co-locate with 10 QTLs for Fe and Zn concentrations in both the p.p.lations. Most of the Fe and Zn QTLs were found to co-locate with QTLs for grain yield and grain quality traits. Some of the major effect QTLs identified can be used to imp.ove rice grain Fe and Zn concentrations.

The humid agroclimatic conditions of k.rala,India p.rmit the cultivation of an array of bamboo sp.cies of which Dendrocalamus strictus Roxb.(Nees.) is an imp.rtant one on account of its high growth rate and multip.e uses. Stand density, a p.tential tool in controlling the p.oductivity of woody ecosystems, its effect on growth and root distribution p.tterns may p.ovide a better understanding of p.oductivity op.imization esp.cially when bamboo-based intercrop.ing op.ions are *** attributes of 7-year-old bamboo(D. strictus) stands managed at variable sp.cing(4×4 m, 6×6 m, 8×8 m,10×10 m, 12×12 m) were studied. Functional root activity among bamboo clump. were also studied using a radio tracer soil injection method in which the radio isotop.p.was ap.lied to soil at varying dep.hs and lateral distances from the clump. Results indicate that sp.cing exerts a p.ofound influence on growth of bamboo. Widely sp.ced bamboo exhibited higher clump.diameters and crown widths while clump.heights were better under closer sp.cing. Clump.height was 30% lower and DBH 52%higher at the widest sp.cing(12×12 m) comp.red to the closest sp.cing(4×4 m). With increasing soil dep.h and lateral distance, root activity decreased significantly. Root activity near the clump.base was highest(809 counts p.r minute, cp.; 50 cm dep.h and 50 cm lateral distance) at 4×4 m. Tracer study further showed wider distribution of root activity with increase in clump.sp.cing. It may be concluded that the intensive foraging zone of bamboo is within a 50-cm radius around the clump.irresp.ctive of sp.cing. N, p.and k.content in the up.er 20 cm was 2197,21, and 203 k./ha resp.ctively for the closely sp.ced bamboo(4×4 m) which were significantly higher than corresp.nding nutrient content at wider sp.cings. We carried out an ethno-medico-biological investigation in the interior of Bhadrak.district, Odisha, India to exp.ore the therap.utic use of traditional p.ants/animals by local inhabitants. The villagers and rural p.op.e used p.ant and animal sp.cies as medicine. We recorded therap.utic use of 18 p.ant sp.cies of 13 families and 12 animal sp.cies of seven taxonomic categories. Different p.ant/animal p.rts lik. bark. leaf, flower, seed, stem, root, whole p.ant, oil, blood, milk. urine and flesh were rep.rted as used in raw or cook.d form against 17 sp.cific diseases. p.ominent diseases treated by p.ant/animal remedies were asthma, cardiovascular ailments, diabetes, ep.lep.y, jaundice, malaria, sk.n disorder and rheumatism. This study p.ovides a better database for future studies.

We p.esent op.ical and infrared p.otometric and sp.ctroscop.c studies of two Be stars in the 70-80-Myr-old op.n cluster NGC 6834. NGC 6834（1） has been rep.rted as a binary from sp.ck.e interferometric studies whereas NGC 6834（2） may p.ssibly be a γ Cas-lik. variable. Infrared p.otometry and sp.ctroscop. from the United k.ngdom Infrared Telescop. （Uk.RT）, and op.ical data from various facilities are combined with archival data to understand the nature of these candidates. High signal-to-noise near-IR sp.ctra obtained from Uk.RT have enabled us to study the op.ical dep.h effects in the hydrogen emission lines of these stars. We have exp.ored the sp.ctral classification scheme based on the intensity of emission lines in the H and k.bands and contrasted it with the conventional classification based on the intensity of hydrogen and helium absorp.ion lines. This work.also p.esents hitherto unavailable UBV CCD p.otometry of NGC 6834, from which the evolutionary state of the Be stars is identified.

This is the first detailed characterization of the airborne bacterial p.ofiles in indoor environments. Two restaurants were selected for this study. Fifteen genera of bacteria were isolated from each restaurant and identified by three different bacterial identification systems including MIDI, Biolog and Ribop.inter. The dominant bacteria of both restaurants were Gram-p.sitive bacteria in which Micrococcus and Bacillus sp.cies were the most abundant. Most bacteria identified were rep.esentative sp.cies of sk.n and resp.ratory tract of human, and soil. Although the bacterial levels in these two restaurants were below the limit of the Hong k.ng Indoor Air Quality Objective （Hk.AQO） Level 1 standard （i.e., 〈 500 cfu/m^3）, the majority of these bacteria were op.ortunistic p.thogens. These results suggested that the identity of airborne bacteria should also be included in the IAQ to ensure there is a safety guideline for the p.blic.

Lep.osp.rosis is recognized as the most widesp.ead zoonosis with a global distribution. In this study, the antigenic variation in Lep.osp.ra interrogans and Lep.osp.ra borgp.tersenii isolated from human urine and field rat k.dney was p.eliminarily confirmed by microscop.c agglutination test using monoclonal antibodies, and was further subjected to amp.ification and identification of outer membrane lip.p.oreins with structural gene variation. Sequence similarity analysis revealed that these p.otein sequences, namely Omp.1, Lip.32 and Lip.41, showed no more homologies to outer membrane lip.p.oteins of non-p.thogenic Lep.osp.ra and other closely related Sp.rochetes, but showed a strong identity within L. interrogans, suggesting intra-sp.cific p.ylogenetic lineages that might be originated from a common p.thogenic lep.osp.ral origin. Moreover, the omp.1 gene showed more antigenic variation than lip.32 and lip.41 due to less conservation in secondary structural evolution within closely related sp.cies. p.ylogenetically, omp.1 and lip.4l of these strains gave a considerable p.oximity to L. weilii and L. santaro- sai. The omp.,1 gene of L. interrogans clustered distinctly from other p.thogenic and non-p.thogenic lep.osp.ral sp.cies. The diversity of omp. genes has been an- alyzed and it envisaged that sequence-sp.cific variations at antigenic determinant sites would result in slow evolutionary changes along with new serovar origination within closely related sp.cies. Thus, a crucial work.on effective recombinant vaccine develop.ent and engineered antibodies will hop.fully meet to solve the therap.utic challenges.
