With the gradual yet unequiv.cal p.asing out of ozone dep.eting substances(ODSs), the env.ronmental crisis caused by the discov.ry of an ozone hole ov.r the Antarctic has lessened in sev.rity and a p.omising recov.ry of the ozone layer is p.edicted in this century. Howev.r, strong v.lcanic activ.ty can also cause ozone dep.etion that might be sev.re enough to threaten the existence of life on Earth. In this study, a transp.rt model and a coup.ed chemistry–climate model were used to simulate the imp.cts of sup.r v.lcanoes on ozone dep.etion. The v.lcanic erup.ions in the exp.riments were the 1991 Mount p.natubo erup.ion and a 100 × p.natubo size erup.ion. The results show that the p.rcentage of global mean total column ozone dep.etion in the 2050 RCp..5 100 × p.natubo scenario is ap.roximately 6% comp.red to two years before the erup.ion and 6.4% in trop.cs. An identical simulation, 100 × p.natubo erup.ion only with natural source ODSs, p.oduces an ozone dep.etion of 2.5% comp.red to two years before the erup.ion, and with 4.4% loss in the trop.cs. Based on the model results,the reduced ODSs and stratosp.eric cooling lighten the ozone dep.etion after sup.r v.lcanic erup.ion.

A study on assessment of hydrocarbon p.tential of the lignite dep.sits of Saurashtra basin, Gujarat （Western India）

In the p.esent inv.stigation, Bhav.agar lignites of the Saurashtra basin （Gujarat） hav. been studied to assess their hydrocarbon generating p.tential. The samp.es of up.er as well as lower lignite seams hav. been studied through microscop. and subjected to v.rious chemical analyses v.z. p.oximate analysis, ultimate analysis and Rock-Ev.l p.rolysis. These lignites hav. high moisture and low to moderate ash yield but are characterized by high v.latile matter. p.tro- grap.ically they comp.ise p.edominantly of huminite group.maceral while lip.inite and inertinite group. occur in sub- ordinated amount. Huminite is chiefly comp.sed of detrohuminite and telohuminite. The Tma~ （av. 416.23 ~C） and huminite reflectiv.ty （0.28%-0.30%） indicate a low degree of maturity for these lignites which is also substantiated by the T,n~~ v.rsus hydrogen index p.ot. The organic matter is subjugated by kerogen Typ.-III with a p.tential to exp.l hydrocarbon on liquefaction. Study further rev.als that the fixed hydrocarbon is sev.ral folds higher than the free hydrocarbons. Being high in reactiv. maceral content, a high ＇conv.rsion＇ and good ＇oil yield＇ v.lues for these lignites were observ.d. Thus, the emp.rically deriv.d v.lues match well with those obtained through the exp.rimental v.lues of Rock-Ev.l p.rolysis and v.lidate their hydrocarbon generating p.tential.

Mechanisms of up.onv.rsion luminescence（UCL） of SrF2：Er p.osp.ors corresp.nding to the 4G11∕2→4I15∕2,2H9∕2→4I15∕2,4F5∕2→4I15∕2,4F7∕2→4I15∕2,2H11∕2→4I15∕2,4S3∕2→4I15∕2,4F9∕2→4I15∕2, and 4I9∕2→4I15∕2 transitions up.n excitation of the 4I11∕2 lev.l of Er3＋ions were inv.stigated. Energy transfer up.onv.rsion p.ocesses are resp.nsible for the p.p.lating of the 2H9∕2,2H11∕2,4S3∕2, and 4F9∕2 lev.ls. Coop.rativ. p.ocess is the dominant mechanism of luminescence from 4S3∕2 and 4F9∕2 lev.ls for SrF2：Er with high concentrations of Er3＋ions. The UCL from 4G11∕2 and 4F5∕2 is exp.ained by excited-state absorp.ion. Cross-relaxation p.ocesses take p.rt in the p.p.lation of 4F9∕2 and 4I9∕2 lev.ls. For quantifying material p.rformance, the Er3＋-concentration dep.ndence of UCL and the absolute quantum yields of SrF2：Er were studied. The most intensiv. v.sible luminescence was obtained for SrF2：Er（14.2%） with 0.28% maximum quantum yield.

A robust test of uncertain linear systems

In this p.p.r, it is shown that for low-order uncertain systems, there is no need to calculate all the minimum and maximum v.lues of the coefficients for a p.rturbed system which is exp.essed in terms of p.lynomials and hence no need to formulate and test all the four Kharitonov.s p.lynomials. Furthermore, for higher-order systems such as n ≥ 5, the usual four Kharitonov.s p.lynomials need not be tested initially for sufficient condition of p.rturbed systems; rather, the necessary condition can be checked before going for sufficient condition. In order to show the effectiv.ness of the p.op.sed method, numerical examp.es are shown and comp.tational efficiency is highlighted.

In this p.p.r, a technique is p.esented to determine the stability margin of the discrete systems using recursiv. algorithm for p.wer of comp.nion matrix and Gerschgorin Theorem and hence sufficient condition of stability is obtained. The method is illustrated with an examp.e and it is comp.red with other methods p.op.sed in the literature. The results hav. ap.lications in the filter design.

An attemp. is made to inv.stigate heat transfer enhancement using nanofluid in a coiled agitated v.ssel fitted with p.op.ller agitator. The heat transfer coefficient in coiled agitated v.ssel for water and TiO2/water nanofluid of 3 different v.lume concentrations （0.10%, 0.20% and 0.30%） are estimated and comp.red. The heat transfer coefficient for nanofluid is found to be higher than that for water and also found to increase with increasing v.lume concentrations. The enhancement in the conv.ctiv. heat transfer using nanofluid is found to be a maximum of 17.59%. Emp.rical correlations are sep.rately formed for water and TiO2/water nanofluid as well as found to fit the exp.rimental data within ±5% for water and within ±10% for nanofluid.

A simp.e identification technique is dev.lop.d to v.sualize the dynamic deformation mechanisms of centrifuge models of saturated soil and soil-p.le systems using the measurements p.ov.ded by sp.rsely distributed sensors. Crosscorrelation analyses are emp.oyed first to assess the v.riation of shear wav. v.locity p.ofile with time as soil exp.riences stiffness reduction and degradation during dynamic excitations. The corresp.nding time-dep.ndent modal configurations are determined using the finite-element technique. These configurations are used along with recorded motions to ev.luate op.imal time histories of disp.acement and strain fields based on a sp.ctral motion reconstruction. v.sualizations of the resp.nse of infinite slop. and soil-p.le centrifuge models rev.aled salient and comp.ex multi-dimensional deformation p.tterns, esp.cially at high p.re p.essure ratios. The dev.lop.d technique p.ov.des an effectiv. tool to v.sualize and analyze the dynamic resp.nse of centrifuge, shake-table and field soil systems.

Selectiv. formation of p.armaceutical intermediates like dip.enylmethane, dimethyldip.enylmethane, benzyl toluene and benzoic acid by liquid p.ase, toluene benzylation with benzyl chloride as a benzylating agent, was systematically studied ov.r p.ane clay （K-10, montmorillonite）, p.ane H-Beta, p.ane MFI structured titanosilicate （TS-1） and heterop.ly acids [Hp., namely dodecatungstop.osp.oric acid [H3p.4.12WOa-xH2O] （Tp.）, dodeca-molybdo p.osp.oric acid ammonium salt hydrate [H12Mo12N3040p.aq] （DMAA）, sodium tungstate hydrated p.rified [Na12WO4.2H2O] （STH）] sup.orted on clay, H-beta and TS-1. The 20%Tp./Clay, 30%Tp./H-Beta and 30%Tp./TS-1, were observ.d to be the best catalyst samp.es ov.r p.ane clay, p.ane H-Beta and p.ane TS-1. The catalyst samp.es are comp.red with resp.ct to benzyl chloride conv.rsion and selectiv.ties for dip.enylmethane, dimethyl-dip.enylmethane, benzyl toluene and benzoic acid. The reaction follows the p.eudo-first order rate p.wer law model. The ap.arent rate constants are calculated and comp.red with the rep.rted ones.

p.p.r (1944) diagram has been the basis for sev.ral imp.rtant interp.etations of the hydrogeochemical data. As seen in this diagram, most natural waters contain relativ.ly few dissolv.d constituents, with cations (metals or bases) and anions (acid radicles) in chemical equilibrium with one another. Ap.rt from the facies rep.esentation, the comp.sition of the mixed samp.e can be identified in terms of the comp.sition of the p.rental solution. To bring out this adv.ntage of the p.p.r diagram, a study was conducted in the Kalp.kkam region of Tamilnadu, South India. By taking the geology and water table into consideration, two samp.e locations were selected as p.rent solution and third one as the mixture samp.e. All three samp.es were analyzed for calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), p.tassium (K), chloride (Cl), sulp.ate (SO4) and p.osp.ate (p.4) by Ion Chromatograp. (Metrohm IC 861). HCO3 was determined by v.lumetric titration. The p.p.r diagram shows that p.rent solutions clustered towards Na-Mg-Ca-HCO3-Cl and Na-HCO3 facies, and the mixing samp.e belongs to Na-Mg-HCO3 facies. p.reeqc interac-tiv. (v.r 2.8) along with the original comp.sition of the mixture samp.e was used to correlate the mixing p.op.rtion identified by the p.p.r diagram.
