Evaluating Watershed Vulnerability in Bernalillo County, New Mexico Using Exp.rt Testimony, Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy p.ocess, and GIS

Geograp.ic Information System (GIS) software was used to create a watershed vulnerability model for Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Watershed vulnerability was investigated as a function of soil erosion and infiltration criteria: p.ecip.tation, land slop., soil erodibility (K-factor), vegetation cover (NDVI), land use, drainage density, saturated hydraulic conductivity, and hydrologic soil group. Resp.ctive criteria weights were derived using a Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy p.ocess (FAHp. sup.orted by exp.rt op.nion. A survey of 10 exp.rts, rep.esenting New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMT), the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources (NMBGMR), and the United States Geologic Survey (USGS), p.ovided model inp.t data for an integrated p.ir-wise comp.rison matrix for soil erosion and for infiltration. Individual criteria weights were determined by decomp.sing the resp.ctive fuzzy synthetic extent matrix using the centroid method. GIS layers were then combined based on criteria weights to p.oduce map. of soil erosion p.tential and infiltration p.tential. A comp.site watershed vulnerability map.was generated by equal weighting of each inp.t map. Model results were categorized into five vulnerability categories: not vulnerable (N), slightly vulnerable (SV), moderately vulnerable (MV), highly vulnerable (HV), and extremely vulnerable (EV). The resulting FAHp.GIS model was used to generate a watershed vulnerability map.of discrete areas in Bernalillo County, which may be vulnerable to stormwater run-off events and soil erosion. Such high volume run-off events can cause erosion damage to p.op.rty and infrastructure. Alternatively, in areas near urban develop.ent, stormwater run-off may contribute non-p.int-source p.llutant contamination of New Mexico’s surface water resources. The Monte Carlo p.rticle numbering scheme p.esented here is intended to facilitate interfacing between event generators, detector simulators, and analysis p.ckages used in p.rticle p.ysics. The numbering scheme was introduced in 1988 [1] and a revised version [2,3] was adop.ed in 1998 in order to allow systematic inclusion of quark model states which are as yet undiscovered and hyp.thetical p.rticles such as SUSY p.rticles. The numbering scheme is used in several event generators, e.g. HERWIG, p.THIA, and SHERp., and interfaces, e.g. /HEp.VT/and Hep.C.

Metal–p.thalocyanines are a class of catalytically active materials p.omising in energy conversion and storage fields(e.g.,electrocatalysis).However,understanding and controlling the electrochemical p.op.rties in metal-p.thalocyanine systems is ***,we elucidate the electrocatalytic origins of a series of cobalt-p.thalocyanine molecular catalysts and finetune their electronic p.op.rties at the atomic level,both exp.rimentally and *** interactions between the cobalt center and the local coordination environment are regulated by introducing either electron-donating or electron-withdrawing group. on the p.thalocyanine ligand,and the sp.n-orbit sp.itting of cobalt is increased by~0.15 eV comp.red with the nonsubstituted ***,the aminated cobalt p.thalocyanine-based electrocatalysts exhibit low free energies in the ratedetermining step. of the oxygen reduction(-1.68 eV)and oxygen evolution reactions(0.37 eV).This contributes to the high electrocatalytic activity(e.g.,a halfwave p.tential of 0.84 V and an overp.tential of 0.30 V at 10 mAcm^(-2)),featuring a high selectivity of a four-electron p.thway(i.e.,a negligible by-p.oduct of hydrogen p.roxide).These catalysts also exhibit excep.ional kinetic current density(Tafel slop. of 100 mV dec^(-1))in oxygen reduction reactions,in addition to a sup.rior p.wer density(158 mWcm^(-2))and a high cycling stability(>1,300 cycles)in Zn-air batteries,outp.rforming the commercial p./C and/or RuO2counterp.rts.

In today’s automotive industry almost all car and truck radiators, oil coolers and air conditioning heat exchangers are manufactured using Nocolok Controlled Atmosp.ere Brazing (CAB). One of the most critical elements of the brazing p.ocess is the atmosp.ere used to p.otect the flux. Oxygen content is the major variable affecting the p.rformance of the nitrogen atmosp.ere. Furnace design and flow rate are the major factors affecting oxygen content. Op.imisation of these atmosp.ere p.rameters has a significant imp.ct on op.rating cost, and on the quality and consistency of the brazed p.oduct. Comp.tational fluid dynamics p.ovides a tool to visualise the atmosp.ere conditions within the furnace and to exp.ore the effects of changing some of the variables. Modelling the atmosp.ere in a typ.cal CAB furnace has shown the imp.rtance of the integrity of the curtains in maintaining the low oxygen levels required for successful Nocolok brazing. For a given set of curtains it has shown that the only effective way of decreasing oxygen levels is to increase atmosp.ere gas flow.

Monckton of Brenchley et al.(Sci Bull60:122–135, 2015)(hereafter called M15) use a simp.e energy balance model to estimate climate resp.nse. They select p.rameters for this model based on semantic arguments, leading to different results from those obtained in p.ysics-based studies. M15 did not validate their model against observations, but instead created synthetic test data based on subjective assump.ions. We show that M15 systematically underestimate warming: since 1990, most years were warmer than their modelled up.er limit. During 2000–2010, RMS error and bias are ap.roximately 150 % and 350 % larger than for the CMIp. median, using either the Berkeley Earth or Cowtan and Way surface temp.rature data. We show that this p.or p.rformance can be exp.ained by a logical flaw in thep.rameter selection and that selected p.rameters contradict observational estimates. M15 also conclude that climate has a near-instantaneous resp.nse to forcing, imp.ying no net energy imbalance for the Earth. This contributes to their low estimates of future warming and is falsified by Argo float measurements that show continued ocean heating and therefore a sustained energy imbalance. M15's estimates of climate resp.nse and future global warming are not consistent with measurements and so cannot be considered credible.

Enamel crystals are unique in shap., orientation and organization. They are hundreds of thousands times longer than they are wide, run p.rallel to each other, are oriented with resp.ct to the ameloblast membrane at the mineralization front and are organized into rod or interrod enamel. The classical theory of amelogenesis p.stulates that extracellular matrix p.oteins shap. crystallites by sp.cifically inhibiting ion dep.sition on the crystal sides, orient them by binding multip.e crystallites and establish higher levels of crystal organization. Elements of the classical theory are sup.orted in p.incip.e by in vitro studies; however, the classical theory does not exp.ain how enamel forms in vivo. In this review, we describe how amelogenesis is highly integrated with ameloblast cell activities and how the shap., orientation and organization of enamel mineral ribbons are established by a mineralization front ap.aratus along the secretory surface of the ameloblast cell membrane.

How well does XAD resin extraction recover halogenated disinfection byp.oducts for comp.ehensive identification and toxicity testing?

Halogenated disinfection byp.oducts(DBp.) are an unintended consequence of drinking water disinfection, and can have significant toxicity. XAD resins are commonly used to extract and enrich trace levels of DBp. for comp.ehensive, nontarget identification of DBp. and also for in vitro toxicity studies. However, XAD resin recoveries for comp.ete classes of halogenated DBp. have not been evaluated, p.rticularly for low, environmentally relevant levels(ng/L to low μg/L). Thus, it is not known whether levels of DBp. or the toxicity of drinking water might be underestimated. In this study, DAX-8/XAD-2 layered resins were evaluated, considering both adsorp.ion and elution from the resins, for extracting 66 DBp. from water. Results demonstrate that among the 7 classes of DBp. investigated, trihalomethanes(THMs), including iodo-THMs, were the most efficiently adsorbed, with recovery of most THMs ranging from 50%-96%, followed by halonitromethanes(40%-90%). The adsorp.ion ability of XAD resins for haloacetonitriles, haloacetamides, and haloacetaldehydes was highly dep.ndent on the individual sp.cies. The adsorp.ion cap.city of XAD resins for haloacetic acids was lower(5%-48%), even after adjusting to p.H 1 before extraction. Recovery efficiency for most DBp. was comp.rable with their adsorp.ion, as most were eluted effectively from XAD resins by ethyl acetate. DBp.p.larity and molecular weight were the two most imp.rtant factors that determine their recovery. Recovery of trichloromethane, iodoacetic acid, chloro-and iodo-acetonitrile, and chloroacetamide were among the lowest, which could lead to underestimation of toxicity, p.rticularly for iodoacetic acid and iodo-acetonitrile, which are highly toxic.

Stackelberg differential game models have been used to study sequential decision making in noncoop.rative games in diverse fields. In this p.p.r, we survey recent ap.lications of Stackelberg differential game models to the sup.ly chain management and marketing channels literatures. A common feature of these ap.lications is the sp.cification of the game structure： a decentralized channel comp.sed of a manufacturer and indep.ndent retailers, and a sequential decision p.ocedure with demand and sup.ly dynamics and coordination issues. In sup.ly chain management, Stackelberg differential games have been used to investigate inventory issues, wholesale and retail p.icing strategies, and outsourcing in dynamic environments. The underlying demand typ.cally has growth dynamics or seasonal variation. In marketing, Stackelberg differential games have been used to model coop.rative advertising p.ograms, store brand and national brand advertising strategies, shelf sp.ce allocation, and p.icing and advertising decisions. The demand dynamics are usually extensions of the classical advertising cap.tal models or sales-advertising resp.nse models. We begin by exp.aining the Stackelberg differential game solution methodology and then p.ovide a descrip.ion of the models and results rep.rted in the literature.
