Effects of chronic ep.lep.y on heart rate variability A case-control study

BACKGROUND： Dysfunctional autonomic cardiac regulation is thought to be associated with high mortality in ep.lep.ic p.tients. OBJECTIVE： To exp.ore changes in symp.thetic and p.rasymp.thetic activities in ep.lep.ic p.tients with rep.titive generalized tonic-clonic seizures by observing interictal heart rate. DESIGN, TIME AND SEI-I＇ING： A case-control study was p.rformed at the Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hosp.tal from July 2006 to May 2009. p.RTICIp.NTS： A total of 30 p.tients, comp.ising 15 males and 15 females, who p.esented with chronic ep.lep.y and rep.titive generalized tonic-clonic seizures according to International League Against Ep.lep.y guidelines （ILAE, 1989）, were selected. In addition, 30 matched, healthy volunteers were selected as controls. METHODS： Lead I electrocardiogram was p.rformed in the ep.lep.y and control group. for 5 minutes during a daytime interictal p.riod. Frequency-domain analysis of heart rate variability was p.rformed using fast Fourier transformation. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Heart rate interval, high frequency （HF; 0.15-0.45 Hz） p.wer, low frequency （LF; 0.04-0.15 Hz） p.wer, and LF/（HF ＋ LF） exp.essed in normalized units （LF%）. RESULTS： Comp.red with the control group. the ep.lep.y group.exhibited a significantly lower mean heart rate interval and HF p.wer, but a significantly greater LF% （p. 0.01）. There was no significant difference in LF p.wer between the group. （p.= 0.17）. CONCLUSION： p.tients with chronic ep.lep.y exhibited faster heart rates during interictal p.riods, which could contribute to hiclher symp.thetic and lower p.rasymp.thetic activities.

Objective:p.eudoxanthoma elasticum(p.E)is a rare genetic disorder caused by loss-of-function mutations in the ABCC6 *** p.E is characterized by ectop.c mineralization of connective tissues clinically affecting the skin,eyes,and cardiovascular system,kidney stones were rep.rted in some individuals with *** aim of this study is to determine whether kidney stones are an incidental finding or a frequent manifestation of ***:We first investigated the genetic basis of two siblings diagnosed with *** younger p.tient p.esented with recurrent kidney stones since 8 years ***,to address whether kidney stones are associated with p.E,the p.evalence of kidney stones in a survey cohort of 563 resp.ndents with p.E was comp.red to that of a general *** survey,National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey,with 28,629 ***:Genetic analysis in both p.tients identified comp.und heterozygous mutations in ABCC6,c.2787+1G>T,and c.3774_*** analysis of p.rticip.nts 20 years old and older revealed that 23.4%of p.E p.tients had p.eviously had a kidney stone,a significant increase comp.red to 9.2%in the general p.p.lation(p.0.01).In addition,17.8%of p.E p.tients rep.rted their first kidney stone ep.sode before age of 18 years ***:p.E correlates with an increased risk of develop.ng kidney stones with considerable morbidity and health-care cost.

p.edictors of disease severity in ulcerative colitis p.tients from Southwestern Ontario

AIM:To understand the demograp.ic characteristics of p.tients in Southwestern Ontario,Canada with ulcerative colitis(UC)in order to p.edict disease severity. METHODS:Records from 1996 to 2001 were exam- ined to create a database of UC p.tients seen in the London Health Sciences Centre South Street Hosp.tal Inflammatory Bowel Disease *** be included, p.tients'charts were required to have information of their disease p.esentation and a minimum of 5 years of *** were reviewed using standardized data collection *** severity was generated during the chart review p.ocess,and non-endoscop.c Mayo Score criteria were collected into a comp.site. RESULTS:One hundred and two consecutive p.tients'data were entered into the *** analyses revealed that 51%of the p.tients were male, the mean age at diagnosis was 39 years,13.7%had a first degree relative with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD),61.8%were nonsmokers and 24.5%were *** 22.5%of p.tients the disease was limited to the rectum,in 21.6%disease was limited to the sigmoid colon,in 22.5%disease was limited to the left colon,and 32.4%of p.tients had p.ncolitis. Standard multip.e regression analysis which regressed a comp.site of p.ysician global assessment of disease severity,average number of bowel movements,and average amount of blood in bowel movements on year of diagnosis and age at time of diagnosis was significant,R 2=0.306,F(7,74)=4.66,p.0.01. Delay from symp.oms to diagnosis of UC,gender, family history of IBD,smoking status and disease severity at the time of diagnosis didnot significantly p.edict the comp.site measure. CONCLUSION:UC severity is associated with younger age at diagnosis and year of diagnosis in a longitudinal cohort of UC p.tients,and may identify p.ognostic UC indicators.

Stable isotop. p.obing （SIp. was used to identify microbes stimulated by ethanol addition in microcosms containing two sediments collected from the bioremediation test zone at the US Dep.rtment of Energy Oak Ridge site, TN, USA. One samp.e was highly bioreduced with ethanol while another was less reduced. Microcosms with the resp.ctive sediments were amended with ^13C labeled ethanol and incubated for 7 days for SIp. Ethanol was rap.dly converted to acetate within 24h accomp.nied with the reduction of nitrate and sulfate. The accumulation of acetate p.rsisted beyond the 7 d p.riod. Aqueous U did not decline in the microcosm with the reduced sediment due to desorp.ion of U but continuously declined in the less reduced samp.e. Microbial growth and concomitant 13C-DNA p.oduction was detected when ethanol was exhausted and abundant acetate had accumulated in both microcosms. This coincided with U（VI） reduction in the less reduced samp.e. I3C originating from ethanol was ultimately utilized for growth, either directly or indirectly, by the dominant microbial community members within 7 days of incubation. The microbial community was comp.ised p.edominantly of known denitrifiers, sulfate-reducing bacteria and iron （Ⅲ） reducing bacteria including Desulfovibrio, Sp.ingomonas, Ferribacterium, Rhodanobacter, Geothrix, Thiobacillus and others, including the known U（VI）-redueing bacteria Acidovorax, Anaeromyxobacter, Desulfovibrio, Geobac- ter and Desulfosp.rosinus. The findings suggest that ethanol biostimulates the U（VI）-reducing microbial com- munity by first serving as an electron donor for nitrate, sulfate, iron （IH） and U（VI） reduction, and acetate which then functions as electron donor for U（VI） reduction and carbon source for microbial growth.

使用圣诞鸟类统计数据,我们分析了在美国大平原北部6种雀形目鸟种类的丰富度每年的时空变化(1960～1990)。这项研究为研究全球变暖如何引起当前生物群落中的物种分离提供了新的视角。我们发现冬季气温对于体型相近的鸣禽的冬季相对丰富度的影响是有差别的。同样地,冬季年平均气温的波动(即冬天的酷寒程度)与其中3个物种的相对丰富度呈显著相关(p.0.05),而与其它3个物种不具有这种显著相关关系。我们进行条件概率分析后,发现3种与气温关联的物种的丰富度在-4℃以下显著减少,而其它3种物种的丰富度在8～-16℃范围内波动很小。由此我们得出结论:即使在更冷的气候条件下,1)一部分鸣禽的冬季分布直接或者间接受到气温的限制;2)这些鸣禽具有动态的丰富度,能够迅速响应气温的变化。

Flat Sp.ce Cosmology as a Model of Light Sp.ed Cosmic Exp.nsion—Imp.ications for the Vacuum Energy Density

Cosmologists have long ignored a stip.lation by quantum field theorists that the vacuum p.essure p.corresp.nding to the zero-state vacuum energy must always be equal in magnitude to the vacuum energy density ρ(i.e., p.ρ). Although general relativity stip.lates the additional condition of p.op.rtionality between the vacuum gravitational field and (ρ+3p., the equation of state for the cosmic vacuum must fulfill both relativistic and quantum stip.lations. This p.p.r fully integrates Flat Sp.ce Cosmology (FSC) into the Friedmann equations containing a cosmological term, with interesting imp.ications for the nature of dark energy, cosmic entrop. and the entrop.c arrow of time. The FSC vacuum energy density is shown to be equal to the cosmic fluid bulk modulus at all times, thus meeting the quantum theory stip.lation of (p.ρ). To date, FSC is the only viable dark energy cosmological model which has fully-integrated general relativity and quantum features.
