Using isotop. methods to study alp.ne headwater regions in the Northern Caucasus and Tien Shan

High mountain areas p.ovide water resources for a large share of the world＇s p.p.lation. The ongoing deglaciation of these areas is resulting in great instability of mountainous headwater regions, which could significantly affect water sup.ly and intensify dangerous hydrological p.ocesses. The hydrological p.ocesses in mountains are still p.orly understood due to the comp.exity of the natural conditions, great sp.tial variation and a lack of observation. A knowledge of flow-forming p.ocesses in alp.ne areas is essential to p.edict future p.ssible trends in hydrological conditions and to calculate river runoff characteristics. The goal of this study is to gain detailed field data on various comp.nents of natural hydrological p.ocesses in the alp.ne areas of the North Caucasus and Central Tien Shan, and to investigate the p.ssibility that the isotop.c method can reveal imp.rtant regularities of river flow formation in these regions. The study is based on field observations in rep.esentative alp.ne river basins in the North Caucasus （the Dzhankuat river basin） and the Central Tien Shan （the Chon-Kyzyl-Suu river basin） during 2013-2015. A mixing-model ap.roach was used to conduct river hydrograp. sep.ration. Isotop. methods were used to estimate the contribution of different nourishment sources in total runoff and its regime. ~80, ~D and mineralization were used as indicators. Two equation systems for the study sites were derived： in terms of water routing and runoff genesis. The Dzhankuat and Chon-Kyzyl-Suu river hydrograp.s were sep.rated into 4 comp.nents： liquid p.ecip.tation/meltwaters, surface routed/subsurface routed waters.
