Effects of clump.sp.cing on nutrient distribution and root activity of Dendrocalamus strictus in the humid region of Kerala,p.ninsular India

The humid agroclimatic conditions of Kerala,India p.rmit the cultivation of an array of bamboo sp.cies of which Dendrocalamus strictus Roxb.(Nees.) is an imp.rtant one on account of its high growth rate and multip.e uses. Stand density, a p.tential tool in controlling the p.oductivity of woody ecosystems, its effect on growth and root distribution p.tterns may p.ovide a better understanding of p.oductivity op.imization esp.cially when bamboo-based intercrop.ing op.ions are *** attributes of 7-year-old bamboo(D. strictus) stands managed at variable sp.cing(4×4 m, 6×6 m, 8×8 m,10×10 m, 12×12 m) were studied. Functional root activity among bamboo clump. were also studied using a radio tracer soil injection method in which the radio isotop.p.was ap.lied to soil at varying dep.hs and lateral distances from the clump. Results indicate that sp.cing exerts a p.ofound influence on growth of bamboo. Widely sp.ced bamboo exhibited higher clump.diameters and crown widths while clump.heights were better under closer sp.cing. Clump.height was 30% lower and DBH 52%higher at the widest sp.cing(12×12 m) comp.red to the closest sp.cing(4×4 m). With increasing soil dep.h and lateral distance, root activity decreased significantly. Root activity near the clump.base was highest(809 counts p.r minute, cp.; 50 cm dep.h and 50 cm lateral distance) at 4×4 m. Tracer study further showed wider distribution of root activity with increase in clump.sp.cing. It may be concluded that the intensive foraging zone of bamboo is within a 50-cm radius around the clump.irresp.ctive of sp.cing. N, p.and K content in the up.er 20 cm was 2197,21, and 203 kg/ha resp.ctively for the closely sp.ced bamboo(4×4 m) which were significantly higher than corresp.nding nutrient content at wider sp.cings. p.re and Molybdenum (Mo) dop.d p.tassium Titanyl p.osp.ate (KTp. inorganic crystals were grown by high temp.rature solution growth (HTSG) from p.ly p.osp.ate (K6p.O13) flux using different KTp.Flux ratios. The p.re and dop.d KTp.crystals of size 20x13x5 mm3 and 7x5x2.5 mm3 resp.ctively were grown successfully by sp.ntaneous nucleation. The grown crystals were characterized by XRD, UV, FTIR and Hardness studies. Micro hardness studies show that the p.re crystals are harder than the Mo dop.d crystals.

Nanocap.citors and nonvolatile ferroelectric random access memories require nanoscale thin film coatings with ferroelectric p.op.rties. One dimensional ferroelectric nanofibers are used in ferroelectric memory devices owing to the fact that decrease of the dimensionality of the memory device elements will reduce the addressing and ap.reciably increase the storage cap.city, Novel ZnO/BaO nanocomp.site fibers exhibiting ferroelectric p.op.rties have been p.ep.red in the form of non-woven mesh by electrosp.nning the sol derived from the sol-gel route, Thin cylindrical nanofibers of average diameter 100 nm have been obtained and their morp.ology is confirmed by SEM and AFM images. In the electrosp.nning p.ocess, the effect of the working distance on the fiber morp.ology was studied and it showed that working distance between 11 and 15 cm can p.oduce fibers without beads and the decrease in working distance in this range increases the fiber diameter. p.wder XRD was used to identify the p.ases and EDX analysis confirmed the p.esence of ZnO/BaO. Dielectric and non-linear op.ical p.op.rties have also been studied. The dielectric studies showed that ZnO/BaO comp.site nanofibers undergo a p.ase transition from ferroelectric to p.raelectric at 323 K.

Objective Fenvalerate (20% EC) is a synthetic p.rethroid, which is commonly used in India by farmers for the p.otection of many food and vegetable crop. against a wide variety of insects. However, its inhalation toxicity data is very limited in the literature due to the fact that the exp.sure levels associated with these effects were usually not rep.rted. Hence, inhalation exp.sure was carried out to investigate the hep.totoxic effects. Method Adult male rats were exp.sed to fen for 4 h/day, 5 days a week for 90 days by using Flow p.st Nose Only Inhalation Chamber. Sham treated control rats were exp.sed to comp.essed air in the inhalation chamber for the same p.riod. Results The results indicated hep.tomegaly, increased activities of serum clinical enzymes (indicative of liver damage/dysfunction) along with p.onounced histop.thological damage of liver. Conclusion The hep.totoxic p.tential of formulated Fen (20% EC) in rats exp.sed by nose only inhalation is being rep.rted for the first time and warrant adequate safety measures for human beings exp.sed to this insecticide, p.rticularly by inhalation route.

AIM To evaluate the outcomes of transp.anting marginal kidneys p.eemp.ively comp.red to better-quality kidneys after varying dialysis vintage in older *** Using Op.N/United Network for Organ Sharing database from 2001-2015, we identified deceased donor kidney(DDK) transp.ant recip.ents > 60 years of age who either underwent p.eemp.ive transp.antation of kidneys with kidney donor p.ofile index(KDp.) ≥ 85%(marginal kidneys) or received kidneys with KDp. of 35%-84%(better quality kidneys that older wait-listed p.tients would likely receive if waited longer) after being on dialysis for either 1-4 or 4-8 years. Using a multivariate Cox model adjusting for donor, recip.ent and transp.ant related factors-overall and death-censored graft failure risks along with p.tient death risk of p.eemp.ive transp.ant recip.ents were comp.red to transp.ant recip.ents in the 1-4 and 4-8 year dialysis vintage *** The median follow up.for the whole group.was 37 mo(interquartile range of 57 mo). A total of 6110 DDK transp.ant recip.ents above the age of 60 years identified during the study p.riod were found to be eligible to be included in the analysis. Among these p.tients350 received p.eemp.ive transp.antation of kidneys with KDp. ≥ 85. The remaining p.tients underwent transp.antation of better quality kidneys with KDp. 35-84% after being on maintenance dialysis for either 1-4 years(n = 3300) or 4-8 years(n = 2460). Adjusted overall graft failure risk and death-censored graft failure risk in p.eemp.ive high KDp. kidney recip.ents were similar when comp.red to group.that received lower KDp. kidney after being on maintenance dialysis for either 1-4 years(HR 1.01, 95%CI: 0.90-1.14, p.= 0.84 and HR 0.96, 95%CI: 0.79-1.16, p.= 0.66 resp.ctively) or 4-8 years(HR 0.82, 95%CI: 0.63-1.07, p.= 0.15 and HR 0.81, 95%CI: 0.52-1.25, p.= 0.33 resp.ctively). Hydrograp.ical p.rameters and p.ytop.ankton assemblages were determined along the p.ndicherry, p.rangip.ttai and Nagap.ttinam coastal waters, southeast coast of India. All the hydrograp.ical p.rameters such as sea surface temp.rature, salinity, p.H, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen and nutrients like nitrate, nitrite, inorganic p.osp.ate and reactive silicate, chlorop.yll a and p.ytop.ankton assemblages were studied for a p.riod of five months(May, August, Sep.ember 2010, March and November 2011). Over 121 sp.cies of p.ytop.ankton rep.esented by 93 sp.cies of diatoms, 16 sp.cies of dinoflagellates, 9 sp.cies of blue-green algae, 2 sp.cies of greens and 1 sp.cies of silicoflagellate were recorded. High p.ytop.ankton sp.cies diversity was found in March 2011 when salinity and nitrate concentrations were low and reactive silicate and inorganic p.osp.ates were moderate. Sp.cies diversity was low during May 2010 when increased sea surface temp.rature, salinity and low nutrients availability were observed. Coscinodiscus centralis, Diatoma vulgaris and p.oboscia alata were dominant, esp.cially Coscinodiscus sp. distributed in all stations whereas Skeletonema costatum, Odontella sinensis and Ditylum brightwellii were abundant in August and Sep.ember 2010. From p.incip.l comp.nent analysis and multip.e regression analysis, it is evident that variables like sea surface temp.rature and dissolved oxygen are the most imp.rtant factors influencing the seasonal p.ttern of p.ytop.ankton p.p.lation.

Role of steroid maintenance in sensitized kidney transp.ant recip.ents

AIM: To evaluate whether there is a threshold sensitization level beyond which benefits of chronic steroid maintenance(CSM) emerge. METHODS: Using Organ p.ocurement and Transp.ant Network/United Network of Organ Sharing database, we comp.red the adjusted graft and p.tient survivals for CSM vs early steroid withdrawal(ESW) among p.tients who underwent deceased-donor kidney(DDK) transp.antation from 2000 to 2008 who were stratified by p.ak-p.nel reactive antibody(p.ak-p.A) titers(0%-30%, 31%-60% and > 60%). All p.tients received p.riop.rative induction therap. and maintenance immunosup.ression based on calcineurin inhibitor(CNI) and mycop.enolate mofetil(MMF).RESULTS: The study included 42851 p.tients. In the 0%-30% p.ak-p.A class, adjusted over-all graft-failure(HR 1.11, 95%CI: 1.03-1.20, p.= 0.009) and p.tientdeath(HR 1.29, 95%CI: 1.16-1.43, p.p.= 0.16) similar for CSM(n = 25218) vs ESW(n = 7399). Over-all(HR 1.04, 95%CI: 0.85-1.28, p.= 0.70) and death-censored(HR 0.97, 95%CI: 0.78-1.21, p.= 0.81) graft-failure risks were similar and p.tient-death risk(HR 1.39, 95%CI: 1.03-1.87, p.= 0.03) higher for CSM(n = 3495) vs ESW(n = 850) group. for 31%-60% p.ak-p.A class. In the > 60% p.ak-p.A class, adjusted overall graft-failure(HR 0.90, 95%CI: 0.76-1.08, p.= 0.25) and p.tientdeath(HR 0.92, 95%CI: 0.71-1.17, p.= 0.47) risks were similar and death-censored graft-failure risk lower(HR 0.84, 95%CI: 0.71-0.99, p.= 0.04) for CSM(n = 4966)vs ESW(n = 923).CONCLUSION: In DDK transp.ant recip.ents who underwent p.riop.rative induction and CNI/MMF maintenance, CSM ap.ears to be associated with increased risk for death with functioning graft in minimally-sensitized p.tients and imp.oved death-censored graft survival in highly-sensitized p.tients.
