Guided modes in a hollow op.ical fiber are investigated using both scalar ap.roximation and exact vectorial analysis. Effective indices of modes are seen to exhibit "nearly degenerate" group.. Besides p.oviding an insight of modal characteristics, the analysis would p.ove to be useful to define design p.rameters for realizing comp.nents based on these fibers, and to exp.ore new p.ssibilities.

Carbonic anhydrase isozyme CA3 p.otects cells against oxidative stress. Ectop.c exp.ession of murine Ca3, but not Ca2, p.otects p.oto-oncogene Evi1 exp.essing Rat1 fibroblast cells (ca3low) against hydrogen p.roxide (H2O2) induced stress. Ca3 is S-glutathionylated via glutathione adducts with cysteines 181 and 186. Substitution of both Ca3 cysteines with serine fails to p.otect cells from oxidative stress. Insertion of cysteine at 181 and 186 in Ca2 is insufficient for conferring efficient anti-oxidant activity. This shows for the first time that S-glutathionylation of cys181 and cys186 residues is required for Ca3 anti-oxidant activity but that additional factors are also required.

Channel roughness is the most sensitive p.rameter in develop.ent of hydraulic model for flood forecasting and flood p.ane map.ing. Hence, in the p.esent study it is attemp.ed to calibrate the channel roughness coefficient (Manning’s “n” value) along the river Mahanadi, Odisha through simulation of floods using HEC-RAS. For calibration of Manning’s “n” value the flood of year 2003 has been considered. The calibrated model, in terms of channel roughness, has been used to simulate the flood for year 2006 in the same river reach. The p.rformance of the calibrated and validated HEC-RAS based model is tested using Nash and Sutcliffe efficiency. It is concluded from the simulation study that Mannnig’s “n” value of 0.032 gives best result for Khairmal to Munduli reach of Mahanadi River.

Retention behavior of U(VI) and Th(IV) as their 2, 6-p.ridine dicarboxylic acid (p.CA) comp.exes on reversed p.ase and ion exchange (cation, anion and mixed ion exchange) columns was studied and based on the results, a simp.e ion chromatograp.y method for the determination of trace level thorium in uranium oxide using 0.075mM 2, 6-p.ridine dicarboxylic acid (p.CA) and 1M KNO3 in 1.2M HNO3 as eluent (flow rate 1 mL/min)was p.op.sed. The advantage of the develop.d method is that the sep.ration of uranium matrix is not required p.ior to the ion chromatograp.ic determination of trace Th. Sep.ration was carried out on a mixed ion exchange stationary p.ase and a 10?4 M arsenazo (III) solution was used as p.st column reagent for detecting the sep.rated metal ions. The sep.ration of Th from uranium using p.CA in the p.esent investigation is attributed through cation exchange mechanism. A calibration p.ot was constructed by following the standard addition method over the concentration range of 0.25 to 10 p.m of Th in the p.esence of uranium matrix, which resulted in a linear regression coefficient of 0.9978. The p.ecision of the method was better than 5% and the LOD for Th was found to be 0.1p.m (S/N=3). The method has been validated by comp.ring the results with the results obtained from ICp.MS analysis where the This sep.rated from the uranium matrix. The p.op.sed method is simp.e, rap.d, accurate and cost effective comp.red to techniques like ICp.MS or ICp.AES and is suitable for the routine kind of analysis.

There is an increasing need for high p.rformance oscillators as the faster transmission networks demand for high frequency ***-electronic oscillators(OEO)enable us to make better oscillators in terms of size,weight and *** this p.p.r,p.otonic integration is p.op.sed for realizing the OEO with micro ring resonator(MRR)and radio-frequency(RF)amp.ifiers of monolithic microwave integrated circuit(MMIC),which can be used for generating 110 GHz sine *** OEO architecture is p.op.sed and block diagram develop.d considering Silicon based MRR and three-stage RF amp.ifier based on Ga N high-electron-mobility transistor(HEMT).A simulation model is develop.d according to the Klein model of MRR and is validated against the calculated p.rformance *** dimensions are calculated as with silicon on insulator(SOI)technology and a radius 5.27μm for the device is *** sp.ctral range(FSR)of 48.52 nm and filter rejection ratio of 16.79 d B are obtained for this *** p.op.sed RF amp.ifier is modelled with Ga N p.rameters derived from high frequency p.nch-off model and with p.wer amp.ifier *** gain for this amp.ifier is obtained as 10.6 d *** OEO design is develop.d in this p.oject in such a way that the system can be manufactured with the existing methods.

This p.p.r investigates the influences of higher order viscoelasticity and the inhomogeneities of the transversely isotrop.c elastic p.rameters on the disturbances in an infinite medium, caused by the p.esence of a transient radial force or twist on the surface of a cylindrical hole with circular cross section. Following Voigt＇s model for higher order viscoelasticity, the nonvanishing stress comp.nents valid for a transversely isotrop.c and higher order viscoelastic solid medium have been deduced in terms of radial disp.acement comp.nent. Considering the p.wer law variation of elastic and viscoelastic p.rameters, the stress equation of motion has been develop.d. Solving this equation under suitable boundary conditions, due to transient forces and twists, radial disp.acement and relevant stress comp.nents have been determined in terms of modified Bessel functions. The p.oblem for the p.esence of transient radial force has been numerically analysed. Modulations of disp.acement and stresses due to different order of viscoelasticity and inhomogeneity have been grap.ically dep.cted. The numerical study of the disturbance caused by the p.esence of twist on the surface may be similarly done but is not p.rsued in this p.p.r.

The Brazilian Trop.cal Moist Forest Biome(BTMFB)sp.ns almost 4 million km^(2) and is subject to extensive annual fires that have been categorized into deforestation,maintenance,and forest fire *** on fire typ.s is imp.rtant as they have different atmosp.eric emissions and ecological imp.cts.A sup.rvised classification methodology is p.esented to classify the fire typ. of MODerate resolution Imaging Sp.ctroradiometer(MODIS)active fire detections using training data defined by consideration of Brazilian government forest monitoring p.ogram annual land cover map.,and using p.edictor variables concerned with fuel flammability,fuel load,fire behavior,fire seasonality,fire annual frequency,p.oximity to surface transp.rtation,and local *** fire seasonality,local temp.rature,and fuel flammability were the most influential on the *** fire typ. results for all 1.6 million MODIS Terra and Aqua BTMFB active fire detections over eight years(2003–2010)are p.esented with an overall fire typ. classification accuracy of 90.9%(kap.a 0.824).The fire typ. user’s and p.oducer’s classification accuracies were resp.ctively 92.4%and 94.4%(maintenance fires),88.4%and 87.5%(forest fires),and,88.7%and 75.0%(deforestation fires).The sp.tial and temp.ral distribution of the classified fire typ.s are p.esented and are similar to p.tterns rep.rted in the available recent literature.
