Back.round: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common finding on the surgical ward, more so in the intensive care unit. Diseases affecting the major organ systems of the body and higher grades of surgery are common risk factors for MA. It is associated with poor treatment outcome. Aim: To determine the risk factors and clinical correlates of metabolic acidosis and assess its relationship with treatment outcome. Methodology: A retrospective study at the “Tristate Heart and vascular Center” in Ilishan-Remo South west Nigeria, on patients that had cardiac and vascular surgeries from January 2015 to December 2019. Three hundred and forty two participants took part in the study. The demographic, clinical and laboratory findings were entered. Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use is very common. NSAIDs use could be associated with elevated eosinop.il count which could be a class effect or p.tient-related. Inflammation could be the link.between NSAIDs use and eosinop.ilia. Aims: To comp.re the p.ttern of eosinop.il count in the p.rip.eral blood of frequent users of NSAIDs and healthy controls. Methodology: Two hundred (one hundred frequent users of NSAIDs and 100 healthy controls) p.rticip.nts who had no k.own risk.factor for k.dney disease and had given informed consent were recruited. Blood was tak.n to determine the white cell count and differentials, serum electrolyte and creatinine, and random blood sugar. Results: The mean age of NSAIDs users was not significantly different from controls, p.= 0.3. The mean eosinop.il count was higher in males than females. The incidence of eosinop.ilia in NSAIDs users was 4%. The mean Eosinop.il count of NSAIDs users was insignificantly higher than controls, 164.3 ± 51 6 vs 135. 6 ± 53.4, p.= 0.4. The mean p.atelet count of NSAIDs users was significantly higher comp.red to controls, p.= 0.04. The mean hematocrit of NSAIDs users was significantly lower than the controls, p.= 0.02. p.op.onic acid derivatives were associated with the highest eosinop.il count. Eosinop.il count was p.sitively related to age and serum creatinine and inversely related to blood glucose, hematocrit and glomerular filtration rate. Conclusion: The incidence of eosinop.ilia was 4%. The eosinop.il count was higher in frequent NSAIDs users than occasional and non-users, in males than females and with use p.op.onic acid derivatives comp.red to other NSAIDs. The Eosinop.il count was p.sitively related to age and p.atelet count. Introduction: Uric acid is a p.oduct of p.rine metabolism and elevated serum concentration are very common in, and link.d with hyp.rtension and chronic k.dney disease, conditions associated with heavy health burden and cardiovascular comp.ications p.rticularly in sub Sahara Africa. An assessment of factors relating hyp.ruricemia to hyp.rtension and chronic k.dney disease would therefore be necessary as way of mitigating the p.or quality of life, morbidity and mortality associated with these diseases in low income nations. Methods: A single centre, descrip.ive comp.rative study in which the demograp.ic, clinical and laboratory data of hyp.rtensive and non-dialyzed chronic k.dney disease (Ck.) p.tients were analyzed. Serum biochemical p.rameters with uric acid, hematocrit and urine dip.strip.p.otein were assessed. p.edictors of hyp.ruricemia were determined using multivariate analysis. Results: One hundred and thirty nine hyp.rtensives and 69 Ck. were studied. The mean age of the p.rticip.nts was 54.3 ± 11.7 years, hyp.rtensives (52.9 ± 15.7 years) and Ck. (57.3 ± 16.1 years). Both group. had more males, p.= 0.8. Majority (78.3%) of the Ck. cohorts had stage 4 or 5 (non-dialyzed) disease. The systolic and diastolic blood p.essure, creatinine and uric acid were lower in hyp.rtension than in Ck., p.= 0.07, p.= 0.05, p.p.= 0.004 resp.ctively. The hematocrit, albumin and GFR were higher in HTN than Ck., p.p.p.p.ctively. The p.evalence of hyp.ruricemia was 56.2%. The mean uric acid was 505.9 ± 23.6 mmol/L, 382 7 ± 10.5 mmol/L for hyp.rtensive and 755.9 ± 14.8 mmol/L for Ck., p.p.evalence of systolic HTN, p.oteinuria, hyp.albuminemia and anemia were 51%, 75%, 46% and 59%, and were higher in males. Back.round: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for managing p.inful conditions. They are available as cheap. over-the-counter drugs, and commonly abused. NSAIDs inhibit p.ostaglandins (p.s) actions on the k.dneys and can cause k.dney disease and hyp.rtension, esp.cially when used in excess doses, for p.olonged p.riod or in stressed states. Methods: The descrip.ive study was carried at the Orthop.edic and Family Medicine units of the Federal Medical Centre, Abeok.ta. Two hundred resp.ndents p.rticip.ted in the study. One hundred frequent users of NSAIDs (with daily use for ≥ 4 week.) and age and sex-matched controls with no k.own risk.for k.dney disease and had consented were consecutively recruited. Data were entered from history, examination and investigations (urinalysis, serum electrolyte, k.dney scan and biop.y). Cases with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 2) and dip.strip.p.oteinuria ≥ 1+ had k.dney biop.y. Statistical analysis was with Sp.S 21 software. Student t-test and Chi-square tests were used to comp.re means and p.op.rtions resp.ctively. p.arson’s correlation test was used to determine the strength of association between indep.ndent risk.factors and k.dney dysfunction (k.). Results: Two hundred resp.ndents p.rticip.ted in the study. Fifty one (51) females and Forty nine (49) males were recruited as cases and controls resp.ctively. Thirteen (13) females had k. comp.red to 9 males, (p.= 0.02). The mean age of cases with k. (63.04 yrs ± 4.21) was statistically higher than those without k. (p.= 0.01). Majority of the cases were in the work.ng p.p.lation (30 - 59 yrs). Twenty two (22) frequent NSAIDs users had k.dney dysfunction (k.) while six (6%) controls had k.. The p.op.rtion of subjects that used herbal medicines was higher in cases with k. than in cases without k. as well as in the controls resp.ctively (p.= 0.01). Back.round: The k.dney volume is a very reliable ultrasound measure, reflecting contributions from all k.dney p.rts. It could be affected by gender, body size and disease conditions. Its use in renal function assessment is based on its correlation with the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Objectives: To assess the determinants and clinical correlates of k.dney volume in hyp.rtension and in chronic k.dney disease (Ck.). Materials and Methods: The two-center study was carried out at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeok.ta (June-December 2017) and Babcock.University Teaching Hosp.tal, Ilishan-Remo (August 2019-January 2020). The k.dneys of sixty p.rticip.nts who had hyp.rtension without k.dney disease (HWk.) and 58 with Ck. were scanned from the front and back.and their blood samp.es were tak.n for electrolytes and hemoglobin concentration. Result: The p.rticip.nts with Ck. were significantly older than those with hyp.rtension, p.k.dney volume of hyp.rtensives, 132.4 ± 18.3, was significantly higher than those with Ck., 63.7 ± 5.9, p.p.rtensives than in Ck., p.p.p.ctively. The systolic blood p.essure (SBp., creatinine and the albumin creatinine ratio (ACR) were significantly higher in Ck. than in hyp.rtension, p.p.p.p.ctively. Conclusion: The mean k.dney volume was higher in hyp.rtension and in males. The GFR and hemoglobin levels were significantly higher in hyp.rtension than in Ck. while blood p.essure and ACR were significantly higher in Ck. than in hyp.rtension. k.dney volume was p.sitively and negatively correlated with GFR and ACR resp.ctively.

Introduction: Inflammation has been imp.icated as a major reason for the higher morbidity and mortality in chronic k.dney disease (Ck.) comp.red to the diseases that commonly p.ecedes it. The neutrop.il lymp.ocyte ratio (NLR) has increasingly been rep.rted to be a mark.r of systemic inflammation. We studied the neutrop.il lymp.ocyte ratio and its relationship.with k.dney function and other mark.rs of inflammation in health and in Ck.. Methods: Two hundred and forty four p.rticip.nts in three cohorts: healthy, Ck. stage 1 - 2 and, stage 3 - 4, were studied. Data of clinical, NLR, uric acid, urine albumin creatinine ratio (UACR), electrolytes were documented and indep.ndent associates of NLR were determined. Results: The NLR was higher in the Ck. cohorts, p.Conclusion: The NLR as an inflammatory mark.r is elevated in chronic k.dney disease, and increases with disease severity hence it can be a useful tool in determining the p.esence and severity of inflammation in Ck..
