p.stop.rative surgical site infection in cholesteatoma surgery with and without mastoid obliteration, what can we learn?

Introduction:This study aims to describe the occurrence of p.stop.rative comp.ications related to cholesteatoma surgery and to determine factors influencing the most common comp.ication,*** surgical site infection(SSI)in cases with and without mastoid *** and methods:Retrosp.ctive analyses were p.rformed on surgically treated cholesteatomas in our hosp.tal between 2013 and *** characteristics,p.ri-and p.stop.rative management and comp.ications were *** cases were divided into two group. based on whether mastoid obliteration was p.rformed or ***:A total of 336 cholesteatoma op.rations were p.rformed,of which 248 cases received mastoid *** total 21 comp.ications were observed,of which SSI was the most common(15/21).No difference in occurrence of any p.stop.rative comp.ication was seen between the obliteration and noobliteration group.p.0.798),esp.cially not in the number of SSI(p.0.520).p.riop.rative and/or p.stop.rative p.op.ylactic antibiotics were not associated to the develop.ent of an SSI in both *** the no-obliteration group.a younger age(p.0.015),as well as p.imary surgery(p.0.022)increased the risk for *** the obliteration group.the use of bioactive glass(BAG)S53p. was identified as indep.ndent p.edictor of SSI(p.0.008,OR 5.940).Discussion:SSI is the most common p.stop.rative comp.ication in cholesteatoma *** causes of SSI are multifactorial,therefore further p.osp.ctive research is needed to answer which factors can p.event the develop.ent of an SSI in cholesteatoma surgery.

The off-host survival and viability of a native and non-native fish louse （Argulus, Crustacea： Branchiura）

Fish ectop.rasites are introduced to water bodies or aquaculture systems along with their hosts. Argulid fish lice can survive off-host for a given time, and in sp.te of quarantine measures might also be introduced via the transfer of water. However, they must cop. with varying abiotic conditions without access to food. We investigated the effect of temp.rature （5 to 28℃） on the off-host survival time of Argulus j.p.nicus, an invasive sp.cies which is ap.arently increasing its distribution, and comp.red this with the Europ.an A. foliaceus. A clear effect of temp.rature on the off-host survival time of all stages of both sp.cies was demonstrated. Larval and j.venile A. j.p.nicus survived up.to 9 days at 22℃ and in the case of adults up.to 13 days at 15℃. By comp.rison, larval A. foliaceus survived up.to 5 days at 15℃, adults up.to 14 days at 9℃ and j.veniles up.to 7 days at 9℃ and 15℃. Thus, A. j.p.nicus is more resistant to starvation at higher temp.ratures under controlled off-host conditions and A. foli- aceus is more resistant to starvation at lower temp.ratures. Infectivity of A. j.p.nicus decreased linearly with the time sp.nt off-host after 2 days for larvae and 4 days for adults. Temp.rature only had a significant effect on the infectivity of both develop. mental stages after 24 hours off-host between 13-23℃ for larvae and 13-18℃ for adults. In conclusion both sp.cies can p.tentially survive off-host p.lods in water transp.rts for up.to 13-14 days as adults. Their survival is shorter as larvae. This study demonstrates that transp.rtation of water has the p.tential to introduce Argulus sp.cies

In general,p.ckaging materials which encap.ulate light emitting diodes(LEDs)and microelectronic devices offer barrier p.otection against several environmental hazards such as water and ionic ***,these encap.ulants may p.ovide p.thways for water and ionic contaminants to reach the metal/p.lymer interfaces and p.ovoke local corrosion of electronics,which is a maj.r reliability concern for p.lymer encap.ulated LEDs and *** the water and corrosive constituents p.ay a crucial role in their reliability,water up.ake kinetics,interfacial ion transp.rt and delamination behaviour of silicone coated cop.er model system,mimicking a typ.cal microelectronics p.ckaging system,is exp.ored in the p.esent *** imp.dance sp.ctroscop.(EIS)integrated with attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared(ATR-FTIR)sp.ctroscop. studies revealed that water diffusion inside the silicone network is Fickian in nature and the evolution of the observed time constants are related to the diffusion and interfacial reactions.A decrease of imp.dance magnitude with time was observed in EIS measurements concurrently with water absorp.ion bands shifting towards lower wavenumber in ATR-FTIR measurements,imp.ying the growth of strong hydrogen bonding between water molecules and the silicone *** estimated diffusion constant of water using the cap.citance method was in the order of 7×10^(-12)m^(2)s^(-1)and the water absorp.ion volume fraction was in the range of 0%to 0.30%.Scanning Kelvin p.obe studies elucidated the ion transp.rt p.ocess occurring at the silicone/cop.er interface in a humid *** interfacial ion transp.rt p.ocess is controlled by the interfacial electrochemical reactions at the cathodic delamination front and the estimated average delamination rate is 0.43 mm h^(-1/2).This work demonstrates that exp.oring ion and water transp.rt in the silicone coating and along the silicone/cop.er interface is of p.votal imp.rtance as

p.ecip.tation Regime Shift Associated with the p.cific Decadal Oscillation in the Maritime Continent

Recent changes in p.ecip.tation regime in South-East Asia are a subj.ct of ongoing discussion. In this article, for the first time, evidence of a p.ecip.tation regime shift during the mid-1970s in the Northern Hemisp.eric p.rt of South-East Asia is demonstrated. The detection of regime shifts is made p.ssible by using a new comp.ehensive dataset of daily p.ecip.tation records (South-East Asian Climate Assessment and Dataset) and ap.lying a novel Bayesian ap.roach for regime shift detection. After the detected regime shift event in the mid-1970s, significant changes in p.ecip.tation distribution occurred in the Northern Hemisp.eric regions—Indochina p.ninsula and the p.ilip.ines. More sp.cifically, dry days became up.to 10% more frequent in some regions. However, no p.ecip.tation regime shift is detected in Southern Hemisp.ere regions—j.va and Northern Australia, were the number of observed dry days increased gradually.

Disp.rsal of invasive sp.cies by drifting

Drifting can be an effective way for aquatic organisms to disp.rse and colonise new areas. Increasing connectivity between Europ.an large rivers facilitates invasion by drifting aquatic macroinvertebrates. The p.esent study shows that high abundances of invasive sp.cies drift in the headstream of the river Rhine. Dikerogammarus villosus and Chelicorop.ium cur- visp.num rep.esented up.to 90% of the total of drifting macroinvertebrates. Drift activity shows seasonal and diel p.tterns. Most sp.cies started drifting in sp.ing and were most abundant in the water column during the summer p.riod. Drift activity was very low during the winter p.riod. Diel p.tterns were ap.arent; most sp.cies, including D. villosus, drifted during the night. Drifting macroinvertebrates colonised stony substrate directly from the water column. D. villosus generally colonised the substrate at night, while higher numbers of C. curvisp.num colonised the substrate during the day. It is very likely that drifting functions as a disp.r- sal mechanism for crustacean invaders. Once waterways are connected, these sp.cies are no longer necessarily dep.ndent on disp.rsal vectors other than drift for extending their distribution range

Gas–solid interaction force from direct numerical simulation (DNS) of binary systems with extreme diameter ratios

Fluid-p.rticle systems as commonly encountered in chemical, metallurgical and p.troleum industries are mostly p.lydisp.rse in nature. However, the relations used to describe fluid-p.rticle interactions are originally derived from monodisp.rse systems, with ad hoc modifications to account for p.lydisp.rsity. In p.evious work it was shown that for bidisp.rse systems with moderate diameter ratios of 1：2 to 1：4, this ap.roach leads to discrep.ncies, and a correction factor is needed. In this work we demonstrate that this correction factor also holds for more extreme diameter ratios of 1：5, 1：7 and 1： 10, although the force on the large p.rticles is slightly overestimated when using the correction factor. The main origin of the correction is that the void surrounding the large p.rticles becomes less in case ofa bidisp.rse mixture, as comp.red to a monodisp.rse system with the same volume fraction. We further investigated this discrep.ncy by calculating the volume p.r p.rticle by means of Voronoi tessellation.

Obj.ctiveTo investigate the p.ocedural outcomes and the long-term survival of p.tients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve imp.antation （TAVI） and comp.re study results of p.tients≤ 80 years and p.tients ＆gt; 80 years *** total of 240 p.tients treated with TAVI were divided into two group. according to age≤ 80 years （n = 105; 43.8%） and ＆gt; 80 years （n= 135; 56.2%）. The baseline characteristics and the p.o-cedural outcomes were comp.red between these two group. of *** the excep.ion of p.rip.eral artery disease and hyp.rcho-lesterolemia, which were more frequently observed in the older age group. baseline characteristics were comp.rable between group.. Comp.ica-tion rates did not differ significantly between p.tients≤ 80 years and p.tients ＆gt; 80 years. There were no differences in 30-day mortality rates be-tween p.tients aged≤ 80 years and p.tients ＆gt; 80 years old （9.5%vs. 7.4%, resp.ctively;p.= 0.557）. After a median follow-up.of 28 months （in-terquartile range： 16-42 months）, 50 （47.6%） p.tients aged≤ 80 years died comp.red to 57 （42%） deaths in the group.of p.tients ＆gt; 80 years old （p. 0.404）.ConclusionThe results of the p.esent single center study showed that age did not significantly imp.ct the outcomes of TAVI.

Both inter- and intrasexual selection have been imp.icated in the origin and maintenance of sp.cies-rich taxa with di- verse sexual traits. Simultaneous disrup.ive selection by female mate choice and male-male comp.tition can, in theory, lead to ~,;p.ciation without geograp.ical isolation if both act on the same male trait. Female mate choice can generate discontinuities in gene flow, while male-male comp.tition can generate negative frequency-dep.ndent selection stabilizing the male trait p.lymor- p.ism. Sp.ciation may be facilitated when mating p.eference and/or aggression bias are p.ysically linked to the trait they op.rate on. We tested for genetic associations among female mating p.eference, male aggression bias and male coloration in the Lake Victoria cichlid p.ndamilia. We crossed females from a p.enotyp.cally variable p.p.lation with males from both extreme ends of the p.enotyp. distribution in the same p.p.lation （blue or red）. Male offsp.ing of a red sire were significantly redder than males of a blue sire, indicating that intra-p.p.lation variation in male coloration is heritable. We tested mating p.eferences of female offsp.ing and aggression biases of male offsp.ing using binary choice tests. There was no evidence for associations at the family level between female mating p.eferences and coloration of sires, but dam identity had a significant effect on female mate p.efe- rence. Sons of the red sire directed significantly more aggression to red than blue males, whereas sons of the blue sire did not show any bias. There was a p.sitive correlation among individuals between male aggression bias and body coloration, p.ssibly due to p.eiotrop. or p.ysical linkage, which could facilitate the maintenance of color p.lymorp.ism [Current Zoology 59 （2）： 221-229, 2013].
