Trace.organic contaminants (TOCs) corre.p.nd to a broad range.of mol.0}ul.0} ge.e.ate. e.the. dire.tl. or indire.tl. by human activity. e.e. though TOCs are.found at l.w conce.trations in the.e.vironme.t, the. ofte. accumul.te.by biomagnification and bioaccumul.tion into biol.gical.organisms and cause.irre.e.sibl.0}damage. in biol.gical.syste.s through dire.t or indire.t toxic e.fe.ts such as e.docrine.disrup.ion and tumour initiation. This manuscrip. p.e.e.ts the.main findings of ove. fifte.n ye.rs of re.e.rch focusing on biol.gical.re.oval.of various TOCs found in se.age.sl.dge.from urban tre.tme.t p.ants. A sp.cial.focus of the.re.e.rch was made.on microbial.p.oce.se. in comp.e. anae.obic e.osyste.s. Four famil.e. of comp.unds mostl. re.rie.e. in urban p.ants we.e.studie.: the.p.l.cycl.c aromatic hydrocarbons (p.Hs), the.p.l.chl.robip.e.yl. (p.Bs), the.p.thal.c acid e.te.s (p.e.), and the.nonyl.2}e.ol.e.hoxyl.te. (Np.s). It was obse.ve. that the.microbial.cap.bil.ty for re.oving l.w amounts of TOCs re.uire. a l.ng adap.ation time.and was ofte. l.mite. by the.bioavail.bil.ty of the.e.comp.unds. In fact, the.ove.al. biode.radation re.ul.e. from the.nume.ous inte.actions e.isting be.we.n the.matrix (organic matte.) and the.microbial.e.osyste.s according to the.p.ysico-che.ical.sorp.ion p.op.rtie. of the.e.comp.unds.
