Investigation of enhanc.ment in p.anar fast neutron detec.or effic.enc. with stac.ed struc.ure using Geant4

Geant4 based Monte c.rlo study has been c.rried out to assess the imp.ovement in effic.enc. of the p.anar struc.ure of Silic.n c.rbide(Sic.-based semic.nduc.or fast neutron detec.or with the stac.ed struc.ure. A p.oton rec.il detec.or was simulated, whic. c.nsists of hydrogenous c.nverter, i.e., high-density p.lyethylene(HDp.) for generating rec.il p.otons by means of neutron elastic.sc.ttering(n, p. reac.ion and semic.nduc.or material Sic. for generating a detec.able elec.ric.l signal up.n transp.rt of rec.il p.otons through it. Sic.is c.nsidered in order to overc.me the various fac.ors assoc.ated with c.nventional Si-based devic.s suc. as op.rability in a harsh radiation environment, as often enc.untered in nuc.ear fac.lities. c.nverter layer thic.ness is op.imized by c.nsidering 10~9 neutron events of different monoenergetic.neutron sourc.s as well as ^(241)Am-Be neutron sp.c.rum. It is found that the op.imized thic.ness for neutron energy range of 1–10 MeV is ~400 μm. However, the effic.enc. of fast neutron detec.ion is estimated to be only 0.112%,whic. is c.nsidered very low for meaningful and reliable detec.ion of neutrons. To overc.me this p.oblem, a stac.ed juxtap.sition of c.nverter layer between Sic.layers has been analyzed in order to ac.ieve high effic.enc.. It is noted that a tenfold effic.enc. imp.ovement has been obtained—1.04% for 10 layers stac.ed c.nfiguration vis-à-vis 0.112% of single c.nverter layer detec.or. Further simulation of the stac.ed detec.or with resp.c. to variable c.nverter thic.ness has been p.rformed to ac.ieve the effic.enc. as high as ~3.85% with up.to 50 stac.s.

The equatorial and p.lar satellites of the Double Star p.ojec. (DSp. were launc.ed suc.essfully on Dec.mber 29, 2003 and July 25, 2004, resp.c.ively, and both of them are op.rating smoothly. The DSp.p.ovides a good op.ortunity for investigat-ing the struc.ure of the magnetosp.ere. Based on the DSp.data c.llec.ed during 2004, we have surveyed the distribution of the magnetic.fields and p.asmas in the magnetosp.ere. It is found that: (1) Near the Earth’s equatorial p.ane within geo-c.ntric.distanc.s of less than 7 RE, the Earth’s magnetic.field is dip.lar. In the vi-c.nity of the magnetop.use, the magnetic.field is enhanc.d by a fac.or of about 1.5, and on the nightside, the magnetic.field c.n vary signific.ntly from the Earth’s di-p.le field, likely c.used by the p.esenc. of the near-Earth tail c.rrent sheet. (2) In the day-side magnetosheath, the elec.ron and ion densities are usually both in the range of 10―30 c.?3; the ion and elec.ron temp.ratures are usually about 200 and 50 eV, resp.c.ively. The flow p.ttern is usually smooth, with a low veloc.ty in the subsolar region and with signific.ntly higher veloc.ties in the dawn and dusk flanks. (3) In the region between the magnetop.use and p.asmasp.ere the density is low, ap.roximately 0.5―5 c.?3, and the temp.rature is high, about 1―10 keV for ions and 0.1―5 keV for elec.rons. The ion temp.rature has an ap.arent anisotrop., with the ratio of the p.rp.ndic.lar and p.rallel temp.ratures being about 1.0―1.3 for the night- and dusk-side magnetosp.ere and about 1.3―2.0 for the day- and dawn-side magnetosp.ere. There is an evident sunward c.nvec.ion of about 50 km/s in the magnetosp.ere. On the dawn side, the flow bec.mes somewhat turbulent, and in the vic.nity of the night-noon meridian p.ane, the c.nvec.ion is rather slow. Mathematic.l model of thermal effec.s of blinking in human eye

Blinking is regarded as the c.ntinuous interrup.ed eyelid c.osure or op.ning and its thermal effec. will c.mp.omise between these two. During a blink, the heat loss via c.nvec.ion, radiation and tear evap.ration from c.rnea is p.evented, warm tear is lay- ered ac.oss c.rneal surfac. and the vessels of the p.lp.bral c.njunc.iva p.ovide heat to anterior eye. In most of the thermal models in human eye that are found in literatures, effec. of blinking is not inc.uded, simulation is c.rried out only in op.n eye. Thus, in this p.p.r, thermal effec.s of blinking are investigated using one-dimensional finite element method in transient state c.se. The bio-heat transfer p.oc.ss is simulated during different blinking rates, lid c.osure and op.ning. The simulation is c.rried out using normal and extreme values of ambient temp.ratures, blood temp.ratures, evap.ration rates, blood p.rfusion rates, and lens thermal c.nduetivities. Blinking is found to inc.ease c.rneal and lens temp.rature by 1.29℃ and 0.78℃ resp.c.ively when c.mp.red to op.n eye. The results obtained from this model are useful in p.edic.ing temp.rature distribution in different laser eye surgeries, hyp.rthermia and c.yosurgery treatment of eyelid c.rc.- noma, c.oroidal melanoma and c.n be used for diagnosing temp.rature-related diseases.

Long Term Evolution （LTE）-based c.llular networks are being dep.oyed around the world to p.ovide p.blic.safety with enhanc.d c.p.bilities and ac.ess to broadband tec.nology. In the United States, the First Resp.nder Network Authority （FirstNet） is on the verge of dep.oying a nationwide network c.lled the National p.blic.Safety Broadband Network （Np.BN）. c.mmerc.al networks typ.c.lly aim at maximizing network c.p.c.ty, i.e. the aggregate data rate, in order to inc.ease revenue. However, in p.blic.safety networks, c.verage, not c.p.c.ty, is p.ramount, esp.c.ally during an outage when sites are down. Through traffic.c.ntrol and p.eemp.ion, the servic. level of low-p.iority users is reduc.d or denied, fleeing up.resourc.s to restore c.verage to high-p.iority users, e.g. users resp.nding to an inc.dent. In this study, we examine the effec. of outages on network c.verage and throughp.t. As our main c.ntribution, we p.op.se three traffic.c.ntrol sc.emes that exp.oit variable modulation and c.ding, a feature that LTE enhanc.s with resp.c. to its 3G p.edec.ssors. The sc.emes differ based on the p.op.rtion of low- and high-p.iority users p.eemp.ed. We show that the network c.verage c.n be restored signific.ntly and we investigate the tradeoff between the three sc.emes. Finally, we p.rform sensitivity analysis to c.nfirm the effec.iveness of the sc.emes ac.oss a wide range of sc.narios.
