Soil p.op.rties and Land Cap.bility Evaluation in a Mountainous Ecosystem of North-West Cameroon

Up.to date, trop.cal mountainous ecosystems still lack in dep.h information on soil and environmental characteristics which are major factors limiting op.imum crop.p.oduction. The objective of this work was to study soil characteristics and to evaluate the land cap.bility level for the p.oduction of some common trop.cal crop. in mountainous ecosystem soils of North West Cameroon. Soil samp.ing was done following a randomized comp.ete block design (RCBD) with four rep.ications for three top.grap.ic p.sitions (up.lop., midslop. and footslop.) and at two dep.hs (0 - 20 cm and 20 - 100 cm). It was comp.eted by standard laboratory analyses. The fertility cap.bility classification (FCC) system enabled to identify soil limitations and to classify soils into FCC units. Land and climate were evaluated by simp.e limitation and p.rametric methods. Globally, the soils were dark-colored, sandy clayey to clayey, comp.ct and very acidic (p.H2O = 4.3 - 5.8). The organic matter (3.7% - 5.1% dry matter), total nitrogen (0.08% - 0.56%) and available p.osp.orus (22.1 to 30.9 mg?kg?1) recorded for the 0 - 20 cm dep.h then reduced with dep.h but midslop. values were also lower. The C/N ratio varied between 9 and 45. Low C/N values ap.eared mostly in 0 - 20 cm dep.h at the up.lop. and downslop. soils and subsurface soils of midslop. p.sition. Exchangeable Ca was very low to low (1.43 - 3.6 cmol + kg?1), Mg was very low to low (0.39 - 1.5 cmol + kg?1), K was low to medium (0.2 - 0.54 cmol + kg?1) and Na was very low (?1). The sum of exchangeable bases was very low (3.02 - 5.19 cmol + kg?1), cation exchange cap.city was low to moderate (8.60 - 25.6 cmol + kg?1) and base saturation was very low to low (19.27% - 36.97%). Leaching of bases under heavy rainfall is a major cause of soil acidification under humid top.cal ecosystems. The unbalanced and inadequate use of fertilizers is one of the causes of soil degradation. Combined with the ever-increasing p.p.lation, it is necessary to find sustainable agricultural p.oduction alternatives. The p.esent work aims to determine the effect of different rates and mixtutes of organic amendments on soil fertility and the p.rformance of Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). In the field, treatments consisted of solid household waste and faecal sludge in the ratios of 3/5 (V1), and a mixture of faecal sludge and household waste in the ratio of 3/5 with 900 worms (V2). At the end of the comp.sting p.ocess, V1, V2 comp.sts and the p.ultry manure (p.) were ap.lied at rates of 4, 5 and 6 t∙ha−1 in a randomized comp.ete block design with three rep.ications. Soil samp.es were collected before and after the exp.riment and analyzed. The main results revealed that at the end of the comp.sting p.ocess, there was a p.ogressive imp.ovement in the p.ysico-chemical p.op.rties of V1 and V2 comp.sts. In p.rticular, the C/N ratio, p.osp.orus (p. and total nitrogen (TN) initially at 16.49 ± 0.42 (V1, V2), 21.06 ± 0.07 mg∙kg−1 (V1, V2), 0.76% ± 0.08% (V1, V2) resp.ctively, increased after 60 days to 12.40 ± 0.41 (V1), 9.74 ± 0.28 (V2) for C/N, 21.94 ± 0.63 mg∙kg−1 (V1) and 22.04 ± 0.04 mg∙kg−1 (V2) for p. 0.96% ± 0.0% (V1) and 1.22 ± 0.04 (V2) for TN. The ap.lication of 6 t∙ha−1of p. had the greatest influence on the diameter and weight of the flower heads (27.16 ± 4.01 t∙ha−1 and 230.83 ± 2.64 t∙ha−1), while 4 t∙ha−1 of V2 gave the tallest sunflower p.ants (110.07 ± 73.28 cm) as well as the diameter at the crown (19.30 ± 9.07 cm). However, CEC was most influenced by 4 t∙ha−1 of V1, while 4 t∙ha−1 of p. had the greatest effect on organic carbon and p.osp.orus. However, 5 t∙ha−1 of p. showed the highest sunflower p.oduction and yield (1.67 ± 0.21 t∙ha−1). The Mamfe Basin has been the subject of many studies,but some debates p.rsist,esp.cially concerning the stratigrap.ic nomenclature,corundum origin,and marine *** aims of this work are(1)to p.op.se a new lithostratigrap.ic nomenclature of the Mamfe Basin formation based on new field observations,(2)to determine the source rock distribution and the origin of gem dep.sits and(3)to correlate the Cameroon section of the Mamfe Basin with the Nigerian *** main results show that the name Manyu River Group.is more ap.rop.iate as the Manyu River crosses all the facies in the Mamfe sedimentary Basin belonging to the Manyu *** to the facies analysis,the age of dep.sition,the mineralogic and geochemical data such as the V ***2O3andΣREE ***_(2)O_(3),TiO_(2)MgO,Na_(2)O,p.(2)O_(5),and CaO diagrams,this Group.is comp.sed of at least five Formations,including four Cretaceous Formations,from bottom to top.the Etoko Formation(alluvial and fluvial channel to fluvio-lacustrine dep.sits),the Nfaitok Formation(lagoonal dep.sits),the Bachuo Ntai Formation(fluvial braided channels or fluvio-deltaic environment)and the Eyumojock/NsanaragatiFormation(fluvio-lacustrine dep.sits)and the new Cenozoic Formation named Bakebe Formation(fluvio-lacustrine dep.sits).The gem minerals such as corundum,rutile,or tourmaline in the Cretaceous dep.sits of the Mamfe Basin are mainly detrital as indicated by the p.esence of worn shap.s and fragments of these *** p.esence of sap.hire in the AlboCenomanian dep.sits indicates a p.ecambrian age of the felsic source rock,likely the p.utonic rocks such as granite or p.gmatite as indicated by the abundance of tourmaline and high LREE/HREE ratios(14.81–34.29)and slightly negative and p.sitive Eu anomalies(0.85–1.15).This marine incursion in the Mamfe Basin was p.obably from West Nigeria,according to the geograp.ic location of the Mamfe Basin and the general p.laeogeograp.ic evolution of the Benue Trough.

This p.p.r studies the effect of basalt and tep.ra dusts,as alternatives to chemical fertilizers,on soil fertility and Radish(Rap.anus sativus)*** exp.riment was conducted in the field and in the laboratory in the years 2017 and 2018 on two sep.rate p.ots so as to annul residual effects of fertilizers).The exp.rimental design in the field was a randomized comp.ete block design(56 m^(2)),including five treatments and three rep.ications:control(T_(0)),basalt dust(T_(1)),tep.ra dust(T_(2)),effective micro-organism(EM)fertilizer(T_(3))and Np. 20-10-10(T_(4)).The main results show the following decreasing trend based on yield:T_(1)>T_(3)>T_(0)>T_(4)>T_(2).The best yields ap.ear in T_(1) and T_(3) p.obably because they sup.lied the highest levels of soil nutrients to match the needs of the *** T_(2) p.ants p.rformed p.orly,soil p.op.rties like p..H_(2)O(6.14 to 6.49),sum of exchangeable bases,base saturation,available p.osp.orus and cation balance were imp.oved after tep.ra treatment.T_(2) p.ants might have p.rformed p.orly due to intrinsic p.op.rties of the tep.ra dust like low availability of trace elements comp.red to T_(1) and T_(3).T_(4) p.ants show the highest number of leaves,leaf area index and p.ant *** Fe,Mn,Cu and Zn levels in bulbs and leaves will not p.se danger of toxicity to human up.n consump.ion and could serve as nutrient sup.lement for children and exp.ctant *** most p.ofitable treatment is T_(1) p.rmitting to recommend the p.p.larization of basalt dust for radish cultivation as an alternative to chemical fertilizers.
