AIM:To compare intraocular pressure(IOp)readings obtained with perkins tonometry,i Care Home,i Care 200,and Tonopen to IOp readings obtained with the manometer of a perfusion system to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of each method of tonometry at set ***:The IOp of human cadaveric eyes(n=2)was measured using a manometer inserted into the eye through the optic *** measurements were obtained using a perkins tonometer,i Care Home,i Care 200,and *** measurements were compared to set point IOp measurements of a manometer to determine accuracy and reproducibility of each ***:Mean IOp readings obtained with the perkins tonometer compared to manometer readings demonstrated a difference of-1.0±5.0 mm Hg(p=0.45),indicating a lower reading on average than manometery although not *** IOp difference between iCare 200 and manometer was 5.3±2.2 mm Hg(pp between iCare Home and manometer was 3.5±2.4 mm Hg(p=0.0004).Mean IOp difference compared to manometer was 4.6±4.0 mm Hg for the Tonopen(pp measurements obtained with the perkins tonometer demonstrated a standard deviation of 5.0 mm Hg while the Tonopen measurements demonstrated a 4.0 mm Hg standard *** comparison,iCare 200 and iCare Home demonstrated 2.2 and 2.4 mm Hg standard deviation,***:Applanation tonometry produces more accurate IOp readings than rebound tonometry or Tonopen,however it demonstrates greater variability than the other forms of *** tonometry is more reproducible but tends to over-estimate IOp.

purpose The purpose of the study was to investigate the acute effect of a beginner martial art class and aerobic exercise on executive function(EF)in college-aged young *** is overwhelming evidence that demonstrates acute as well as long-term aerobic exercise improves ***,there is limited research comparing externally paced exercise(EpE)to self-paced exercise(SpE)such as walking on improving *** requires greater cortical demand than SpE to execute a motor *** Eight men and eight women,aged 24.2±2.8 years,participated in a Repeated Measures Crossover ***-and post-testing of EF with the Stroop and Tower of London(ToL)and stress level were measured after each of the two 1-h conditions:the SpE consisted of a walk(aerobic exercise)and the EpE was a beginner martial art *** There were significant main effects for the martial art class for the Stroop’s mean reaction time for congruent trials(p=0.01)with a large-effect *** mean reaction time for incongruent trials was significant(p=0.05)with a medium-effect *** ToL’s mean solution time(p=0.003)and mean execution time(p=0.002)were also significant with large-effect *** levels were not significantly improved following either *** The martial art class significantly improved all the major domains of EF,while aerobic exercise of a similar intensity did not demonstrate any measured significant *** physiological benefits of physical exercise are well documented;however,the cognitive enhancing capability of EpE should also be appreciated given the results of this study.

Objective To investigate the alterations in auditory brainstem evoked responses (ABRs) and the changes of carboplatin-induced ototoxicity in the cochlear oxidant/antioxidant systems and otoprotection by an antioxidant lipoate. Methods Male wistar rats were divided into four groups and treated as follows: 1) vehicle (saline) control, 2) carboplatin (256 mg/kg, i.p.), 3) lipoate (100 mg/kg, i.p.), 4) lipoate + carboplatin. post-treatment ABRs were performed after four days and rats were sacrificed with their cochleae harvested and analyzed. Results Carboplatin significantly elevated ABR threshold above the pretreatment thresholds. Lipoate+carboplatin treated rats showed decreased elevation of hearing threshold. Carboplatin significantly depleted cochlear reduced to oxizized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio, whereas lipoate+carboplatin treatment increased GSH/GSSG ratio. Carboplatin significantly decreased cochlear copper zinc-superoxide dismutase (CuZn-SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities and enzyme protein expressions and a significant increase in Mn-SOD activity, protein expression and malondialdehyde (MDA) level. Cochlear antioxidant enzyme activities, enzyme protein expressions and MDA level were partially restored in lipoate+carboplatin treated rats, compared to carboplatin alone. Conclusion Carboplatin-induced ototoxicity is related to impairment of cochlear antioxidant system and otoprotection conferred by lipoate is associated with partial sparing of the cochlear antioxidant defense system.

Sugarcane borer, Diatraea saccharalis （E）, is a major target of transgenic maize expressing Bacillus thuringiensis （Bt） proteins in South America and the US mid- south region. Resistance development in target pest populations is a major threat to the sustainable use of Bt crops. In our field trials in 2009, a significant number of live borers and plant injury fi＇om D. saccharalis were observed in an experimental SmartStaxTM maize line. The objective of this study was to assess the relative susceptibility of two field popula- tions ofD. saccharalis collected from non-Bt and Bt maize plants containing SmartStaxTM traits to five individual Cry proteins. The five Bt proteins included two proteins （Cry 1A. 105 and Cry2Ab2） that were expressed in SmartStaxTM maize plants and three other common Bt proteins （Cry 1Aa, Cry 1Ab and Cry l Ac） that were not produced in SmartStaxTM. Larval mortality and growth inhibition on Bt diet of the fourth generation after field collections were evaluated 7 days after release of neonates on the diet surface. The laboratory bioassays showed that 50% lethal concentration （LCs0） values for CrylA. 105 and Cry2Ab2 for the population originated from Bt plants were 3.55- and 1.34-fold greater, respectively, than those of the population collected from non-Bt plants. In contrast, relative to the popula- tion from non-Bt plants, the LCs0 of the population sampled from Bt plants were 3.85-, 2.5- and 1.64-fold more sensitive to CrylAa, CrylAb and CrylAc, respectively. The re- sults did not provide clear evidence to conclude that the observed field survival of D. saccharalis on Bt plants was associated with increased levels of resistance.

Background:We examined the associations of cardiorespiratory fitness(CRF) and white blood cell count(WBC) with mortality ***: A total of 52,056 apparently healthy adults completed a comprehensive health examination,including a maximal treadmill test and blood chemistry *** was categorized as high,moderate,or low by age and sex;WBC was categorized as sex-specific ***:During 17.8± 9.5 years(mean± SD) of follow-up,a total of 4088 deaths *** regressed jointly,significantly decreased allcause mortality across CRF categories was observed within each quartile of WBC in *** WBC Quartile 1,all-cause mortality hazard ratios(HRs) with a 95% confidence interval(95%CI) were 1.0(referent),1.29(95%CI:1.06-1.57),and 2.03(95%CI:1.42-2.92) for high,moderate,and low CRF categories,respectively(p for trend ption of cardiovascular disease(CVD) mortality within Quartile 1(p for trend=0.743),there were also similar trends across CRF categories within WBC quartiles in men for both CVD and cancer mortality(p for trend pectively(p for trend=0.002)).Similar trends in women were observed for CVD and cancer mortality within WBC Quartile 4 ***:There are strong joint associations between CRF,WBC,and all-cause,CVD,and cancer mortality in men;these associations are less consistent in women.

prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men worldwide, with an estimated 1.1 million new diagnoses and over 300,000 deaths reported in 2012 by the World Health Organization. A recent 5-year prevalence of the disease was nearly four million, far exceeding all other malignancies in men. Because of these numbers, efforts to improve early detection, accurate assessment of disease burden, and appropriate treatment options are important public-health priorities. However, the basic tool for diagnosis, transrectal ultrasound （TRUS） guided biopsy, is flawed by failure to detect many serious cancers （〉30% false negative rate） and over-detection of nonserious cancers. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging （mpMRI） of the prostate empowers the clinician to identify tumors that would otherwise be missed by conventional techniques and to record the precise locations of positive cores through targeted biopsy using MRI-ultrasound （MRI-US） fusion. As mpMRI advances and the level of experience for the user grows, the correlation between the level of suspicion for a prostate lesion and the MRI-US fusion targeted biopsy revealing malignancy improves. Consequently, the concordance among the targeted biopsy and surgical pathology rises. This in turn, allows the patient and provider to be confident that the therapeutic plan decided upon is representative of the true disease state.
