Nitrogen processed, cold sprayed commercially pure(Cp)-Al coatings on Mg-based alloys mostly lack acceptable hardness, wear resistance and most importantly are highly susceptible to localized corrosion in chloride containing solutions. In this research, commercially pure α-Ti top coating having good pitting potential(~1293 mV_(SCE)), high microhardness(HV_(0.025): 263.03) and low wear rate was applied on a Cp-Al coated Mg-based alloy using high pressure cold spray technology. potentiodynamic polarization(pDp) curves indicated that the probability of transition from metastable pits to the stable pits for cold spayed(CS) Al coating is considerably higher compared to that with the CS Ti top coating(for Ti/Al/Mg system). In addition, CS Ti top coating was in the passivation region in most pH ranges even after 48 h immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The stored energy in the CS Ti top coating(as a passive metal) was presumed to be responsible for the easy passivation. Immersion tests indicated no obvious pits formation on the intact CS Ti top coating surface and revealed effective corrosion protection performance of the CS double layered noble barrier coatings on Mg alloys in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution even after 264 h.

Sources and Deficiency Diseases of Mineral Nutrients in Human Health and Nutrition:A Review

Mineral nutrients are fundamentally metals and other inorganic compounds. The life cycle of these mineral nutrients begins in soil, their primary source. Soil provides minerals to plants and through the plants the minerals go to animals and humans; animal products are also the source of mineral nutrients for humans. plant foods contain almost all of the mineral nutrients established as essential for human nutrition. They provide much of our skeletal structure, e.g., bones and teeth. They are critical to countless body processes by serving as essential co-factors for a number of enzymes. Humans can not utilize most foods without critical minerals and enzymes responsible for digestion and absorption. Though mineral nutrients are essential nutrients, the body requires them in small, precise amounts. We require them in the form found in crops and they can be classified into three different categories： major, secondary, and micro or trace minerals. This classification is based upon their requirement rather than on their relative importance. Major minerals such as potassium （k） and phosphorus （p） are required in amounts of up to 10 g d-1. The daily requirement of secondary and micro minerals ranges from 400 to 1 500 mg d-1 and 45 ~tg d-1 to 11 mg d-1, respectively. To protect humans from mineral nutrient deficiencies, the key is to consume a variety of foods in modest quantities, such as different whole grains, low fat dairy, and different meats, vegetables and fruits. For insurance purposes, a supplement containing various mineral nutrients can be taken daily.

Association of NFkB1 gene polymorphism (rs28362491) with levels of inflammatory biomarkers and susceptibility to diabetic nephropathy in Asian Indians

AIM To investigate the association of NFkB1 gene-94 ATTG insertion/deletion(rs28362491) polymorphism with inflammatory markers and risk of diabetic nephropathy in Asian *** A total of 300 subjects were recruited(100 each), normoglycemic,(NG); type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) without any complications(DM) and T2 DM with diabetic nephropathy [DM-chronic renal disease(CRD)]. Analysis was carried out by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism and ELISA. pearson's correlation, analysis of variance and logistic regression wereused for statistical *** The allelic frequencies of-94 ATTG insertion/deletion were 0.655/0.345(NG), 0.62/0.38(DM) and 0.775/0.225(DM-CRD). The-94 ATTG ins allele was associated with significantly increased levels of urinary monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(u MCp-1); u MCp-1(p = 0.026) and plasma tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α); TNF-α(p = 0.030) and almost doubled the risk of diabetic nephropathy(OR = 1.91, 95%CI: 1.080-3.386, p = 0.025).CONCLUSION-94 ATTG ins/ins polymorphism might be associated with increased risk of developing nephropathy in Asian Indian subjects with diabetes mellitus.

Role of salivary matrix metalloproteinase-8 （MMp-8） in chronic periodontitis diagnosis

periodontitis is an inflammatory disease of the periodontium. Any imbalance between the matrix metalloproteinases （MMps） secreted by neutrophils and tissue inhibitors initiates the destruction of collagen in gum tissue, leading to chronic periodontitis. This study aimed to correlate salivary levels of MMp-8 and periodontal parameters of chronic periodontitis to establish MMp-8 as a noninvasive marker for the early diagnosis of chronic periodontitis. The study involved 40 subjects visiting the periodontic OpD of Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College and Hospital, located in Aligarh, U.p., India, from 2011 to 2012. The subjects were divided into two groups： group I consisted of 20 periodontally healthy subjects （controls） while group II consisted of 20 patients with chronic periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis was assessed on the basis of several periodontal parameters, including pocket probing depth （ppD）, clinical attachment level （CAL）, gingival index （GI）, and plaque index （pI）. Around 3 ml of unstimulated and whole expectorated saliva was collected for MMp-8 estimation by ELISA using Quantikine human total MMp-8 immunoassay kits. Data were analyzed using STATISTICA （Windows version 6） software. Salivary MMp-8 levels of groups I and II were 190.91 ± 143.89 ng/ml and 348.26± 202.1 ng/ml, respectively. The MMp-8 levels and periodontal status （ppD, CAL, GI, and pI） of groups I and II showed positive and significant correlations （for ppD, r = 0.63, p 〈 0.001; for CAL, r = 0.54, p 〈 0.001; for GI, r = 0.49, p 〈 0.001; and for pI, r = 0.63, p 〈 0.001）. The results of this study demonstrate elevated concentrations of MMp-8 in individuals with chronic periodontitis.

Concurrent removal of intravitreal lens fragments after phacoemulsification with pars plana vitrectomy prevents development of retinal detachment

AIM: To evaluate the outcomes of "concurrent vitrectomy" to retrieve dislocated lens fragment during ***: In a retrospective, observational case series, data of patients who underwent "concurrent" pars plana vitrectomy(ppV) for dislocated lens fragments between the period 2000 and 2008 were reviewed. Data collected included patient demographics, pre-operative visual acuity, intra-operative occurrence of retinal breaks, duration of follow up, post-operative intraocular pressure, final best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),presence of cystoid macular edema(CME) and occurrence of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD).· RESULTS: A total of 58 eyes of 58 patients were included in the study. At 12 mo the mean postoperative BCVA was log MAR 0.17(20/30) with a range of log MAR0 to 0.69(20/20 to 20/100), with 96.6%(56/58) of patients showing post- operative improvement in visual acuity(p =0.005). None of the patients developed postoperative retinal detachment, endophthalmitis or non-resolving uveitis at 12 ***: Our study results suggest concurrent ppV for retained lens fragments after cataract surgery is beneficial and may decrease the risk of glaucoma and prevent development of RRD.

predictors of vitamin D deficiency in inflammatory bowel disease and health: A Mississippi perspective

AIMTo identify the predictors of vitamin D deficiency in patients with and without inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).METHODSpatients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or Crohn’s disease (CD) related diagnostic codes who received medical care at University of Mississippi Medical Center between July 2012 and 2015 were identified. After thorough chart review, we identified patients with biopsy proven IBD who had also been tested for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. We compared these patients to a previously studied cohort of healthy controls who also had vitamin D concentration checked. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between vitamin d deficiency and UC, CD, race, age, gender and body mass index (BMI).RESULTSWe identified 237 patients with confirmed IBD. Of these, only 211 had a serum 25(OH)D concentrations available in the medical record. The group of healthy controls consisted of 98 individuals with available serum 25(OH)D concentration. 43% of IBD patients were African American (AA). patients with CD were more likely to have vitamin D concentration checked. Bivariate analysis showed that AA (51% vs 21%, p = 0.00001), subjects with BMI >30 kg/mp>2p> (39% vs 23% p = 0.01) and CD (40% vs 26%, p = 0.04) were more likely to be vitamin D deficient than vitamin D sufficient. Those with Age > 65 were more likely to be vitamin D sufficient (46% vs 15%, p = 0.04). Multiple regression showed that only BMI > 30 kg/mp>2p> and AA race are associated with vitamin D *** > 30 kg/mp>2p> and AA race are predictive of vitamin D deficiency. Gender, age and diagnosis of IBD are not predictive of vitamin D deficiency.

Efficacy of Shanvac-B recombinant DNA hepatitis B vaccine in health care workers of Northern India

BACkGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) constitute a high-risk population of HBV infection. There are limited data on the efficacy of vaccination in HCWs in India. This study was to evaluate the efficacy of indigenous recombinant hepatitis B vaccine, Shanvac-B, in HCWs. METHODS: In 597 HCWs screened before the vaccination, 216 (36.2%) showed the presence of at least one of the markers of HBV/HCV infection. Of the remaining 381 (63.8%) HCWs who were considered for vaccination, only 153 (age 18-45 years; 48 males and 105 females) were available for final assessment. These HCWs received 20 μg of vaccine at 0, 1 and 6 months. They were asked for the reactogenicity and monitored for the seroprotective efficacy of the vaccination. Anti-HBs titres were measured after vaccination at 1, 2 and 7 months. The presence of anti-HBs titers equal to 1 MIU/ml was considered as seroconversion and that of titres greater than 10 MIU/ml as seroprotection. RESULTS: After vaccination, 32 males (67%) and 76 females (72%) showed seroconvertion; finally 12 (25%) of the males and 47 (45%) of the females were seroprotected. Seroprotection at 2 and 7 months was more dominant in the females than in the males (96% vs. 56%, p=0.001, 100% vs. 85%, p=0.0001), respectively. Geometric mean titres of anti-HBs after vaccination were also higher in the females than in the males (257±19.7 vs. 29±1.88 MIU/ml, p=0.01, 1802±35.2 vs. 306±13.6 MIU/ml, p≤0.05, 6465±72 vs. 2142±73.6 MIU/ml, pponse, non-response (n=3, 6%) and hypo-response (≤10 MIU/ml, n=4, 8%) at the end of vaccination. Smoking and alcoholism were significantly correlated with unsatisfactory response. The study is an attempt to design a watershed scorecard by identifying and evaluating selected set of indicators,such as surface water quality,ground water quality,soil condition,agriculture condition,and forest condition,which accurately reflect the health of the *** River Watershed in Tikamgarh District,Madhya pradesh was taken as a case study to assess the watershed *** was done by calculating different indices for the selected set of indicators and comparing them with the National standards and *** on the performance of each indicator,the grades were assigned to the indicators which helped in designing the watershed *** results revealed that within the watershed,the forest and soil conditions need a considerable plan for improvement in order to maintain the ecosystem whereas the surface water quality,groundwater quality and the agricultural conditions requires protection as well as enhancement in certain areas.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease may not be a severe disease at presentation among Asian Indians

AIM： To evaluate the clinical and biochemical profile of patients with non alcoholic fatty liver disease （NAFLD） and to assess their histological severity at ***： Consecutive patients presenting to the liver clinic of All India Institute of Medical Sciences （AIIMS） with raised transaminases to at least 1.5 times upper limit of normal, and histologically confirmed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease were included. patients who had significant alcohol intake or positive markers of other liver diseases or who were taking drugs known to produce fatty liver were excluded. The clinical, biochemical and histological profile of this group was studied. RESULTS： Fifty-one patients with NAFLD formed the study population. Their median age and BMI were 34（17-58） years and 26.7（21.3-32.5） kg/m^2 respectively and 46 （90.1%） were males. The majority of the patients had mild inflammation, either grade 1 [32 （63%）] or grade 2 [16 （31%）] and only 3 （6%） patients had severe （grade 3） inflammation. Twenty-three （45%）, 19 （37%）, 8（16%） and 1（2%） patient had stage 0, 1, 2 and 3 fibrosis respectively on index biopsy and none had cirrhosis. On univariate analysis, triglyceride levels more than 150 mg % （OR = 7.1; 95% CI： 1.6-31.5, p = 0.002） and AST ALT ratio 〉 1 （OR = 14.3; 95% CI： 1.4-678.5, p = 0.008） were associated with high grades of inflammation and none was associated with advanced fibrosis. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, hypertriglyceridemia 〉150 mg% was the only factor independently associated with presence of high grade of inflammation （OR = 1.6; 95% CI： 1.3-22.7, p =0.02）, while none was associated with advanced fibrosis. Triglyceride levels correlated positively with inflammatory grade （r = 0.412; p = 0.003）. CONCLUSION： NAFLD in North Indian patients is a disease of young over-weight males, most of whom are insulin resistant and they tend to have a mild histological disease at presentation.

Heavy metal phytoextraction by Sedum alfredii is affected by continual clipping and phosphorus fertilization amendment

Improving the efficacy of phytoextraction is critical for its successful application in metal contaminated soils. Mineral nutrition affects plant growth and metal absorption and subsequently the accumulation of heavy metal through hyper-accumulator plants. This study assessed the effects of di-hydrogen phosphates （kH2pO4, Ca（H2pO4）2, NaH2pO4 and NH4H2pO4） application at three levels （22, 88 and 352 mg p/kg soil） on Sedum alfredii growth and metal uptake by three consecutive harvests on aged and Zn/Cd combined contaminated paddy soil. The addition of phosphates （p） significantly increased the amount of Zn taken up by S. alfredii due to increased shoot Zn concentration and dry matter yield （DMY）（p 〈 0.05）. The highest phytoextraction of Zn and Cd was observed in kH2pO4 and NH4H2pO4 treatment at 352 mg p/kg soil. The amount of Zn removed by phytoextraction increased in the order of 1st clipping 〈 2nd clipping 〈 3rd clipping, and for Cd extraction the order was 2nd clipping 〈 1st clipping 〈 3rd clipping. These results indicate that the application of p fertilizers coupled with multiple cuttings can enhance the removal of Zn and Cd from contaminated soils by S. alfredii, thus shortening the time needed for accomplishing remediation goals.
