Niche differentiation among facultative filter feeders: Insights from invasive ponto-Caspian mysids

The degree of dietary specialization has a fundamental impact on the ecological function and interactions of suspension *** niche differentiation by food particle size is common among obligate suspension feeders,its role is not evident in facultative *** this study,we aimed at providing new insights on the matter by focusing on sympatric mysid *** mysids use different mechanisms for raptorial and filter-feeding,they represent a more adequate model system than for example,the more extensively studied *** made morpholog-ical measurements on the 4 coexisting invasive ponto-Caspian mysid species to determine the areas and mesh sizes of their *** also quantified their clearance rates on the microalga Cryptomonas *** a laboratory experiment to reveal how morphological differences manifest in their overall filtering *** found relatively small but consistent differences in the primary filter area among the species,indicating that morphological constraints due to the enclosed position of the setae might limit the possibility for *** primary filter mesh sizes were small in all 4 species(0.69-2.73μm)with moderate but consistent intraspecific differences,suggesting that the benefit of being able to capture small particles might outweigh the pressure for *** observed clearance rates were in accordance with the morphological characteristics of the species,highlighting that auxiliary filters(present in one of the species,Limnomysis benedeni)are needed to increase filtering capacity *** study confirmed that food particle size can contribute to the niche differentiation of facultative filter feeders,but also indicated that they can tolerate a higher overlap than obligate *** observed differences were related to the habitat preferences and predatory potentials of the species,suggesting that complementarity among the different niche axes might further facilitate theircoexistence.

Moving Towards a New Era in Corporate Governance Research Methods

Corporate governance is a relatively young field. Nonetheless, the research in this domain has been growing at an impressive speed in recent decades. Analysis of corporate governance has become a key factor in our understanding of corporations in recent years, and an indicator of investor confidence in the decisions is taken by the managers and board of directors of the listed companies. This paper evaluates both qualitative and quantitative techniques that are implied in corporate governance field. The methodological techniques are a key element of the research process In this article, the authors developed a content analysis of the published empirical research in order to expose a possible gap between what is currently done versus what needs to be done in terms of the techniques of data analysis used in corporate governance field. The results of this study allow the authors to draw some valuable conclusions regarding the trends in methodological techniques that support the evolution of corporate governance. The findings indicate that, in general, the researchers are inclined to more sophisticated quantitative techniques. However, the use of qualitative techniques remains preponderant among corporate governance scholars.

Technical Solution and GIS for Improving the Waste Management in Sibiu Surrounding Area

This paper creates a role model to simplify and streamline how waste management is currently in Romania. This model can be further improved and extended to larger scale. To begin an analysis was made concrete in the Sibiu Surroundings on the current situation of waste management. Following tests have found new ways to improve the management process. One of them is to use GIS techniques to centralize and analyze data for a permanent significant improvements in this area. The work is highlighted in the use of GIS techniques in goal. Another method involves the implementation of specific rules from which all the inhabitants of studies should be encouraged to practice composting individual.

DNA Markers for Selection of Late Blight Resistant potato Breeding Lines

potato late blight, caused by the oomycete phytophthora infestans, is one of the most devastating diseases in the agricultural sector around the world. Many genes (R genes) conferring resistance to late blight have been identified in various potato species and most of these R genes have been used in potato breeding. The aim of this study was to develop and validate pCR-based assays for the R genes Rpi-blb1, Rpi-blb2, Rpi-blb3 and Rpi-bt1, to distinguish between late blight resistant and late blight susceptible potato progeny in the given breeding background. A total of 100 breeding progeny were screened for the presence of these R genes and tested for resistance against p. infestans mating type A2, genotype US-8 strain, using detached leaf and tuber rot assays. pCR products for the Rpi-blb1 and Rpi-bt1 resistance genes were identified in the resistant progeny but were absent in the susceptible ones;therefore these pCR assays could differentiate between late blight resistant and susceptible plants. Genotypic data from the DNA markers derived from the Rpi-blb1 and Rpi-bt1 genes was found to correlate with the phenotypic data for foliar late blight but not with data for tuber rot. Our results demonstrate that markers derived from these two R genes could be useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) for foliar late blight resistance in potato breeding programs.
