The influence of relative humidity (RH) on quasistatic current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 thin layers was studied for the first time. The value of electrical conductivity in 75% RH was found to be in the order of 10-7 (ohm·cm)-1, which was 106 orders of magnitude higher than that observed in dry atmosphere. It was concluded that RH played a key role in hysteresis behavior of the measured (I-V) characteristics. FTIR measurements showed that under water moisture environment, the associated bonds between amine and carboxyl group were greatly strengthened that was the source of free charge carries after ionization. The surface charge of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB-12 was found to be negative by zeta potential measurements, claiming that electrons were the charge carriers.

Background: Hyperthyroidism is a major cause of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation(AF). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictors of AF in the patients with clinical and subclinical hyperthyroidism. Methods and Results: The study population consisted of four groups: group I(57 euthyroid healthy persons), group II(33 patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism), group III(69 patients with overt hyperthyroidism) and group IV(31 patients with overt hyperthyroidism and documented paroxysmal AF). The maximum P wave duration(P maximum) in group IV(114±8 ms) was significantly higher than group I(102±7 ms, poup II(106±7 ms, poup III(108±9 ms, pon(PWD) was measured as 46±9 ms in group IV and this was significantly higher than group I(29±8 ms, poup II(36±9 ms, poidism compared to healthy individuals. Univariate regression analysis revealed that age, P maximum and PWD, multivariate analysis showed that P maximum and PWD were significant predictors of paroxysmal AF. A PWD value of 37.5 ms separated group IV from others with a sensitivity of 90%, specificity of 85%, and positive predictive accuracy of 77%. Conclusion: Simply measuring P maximum and PWD values, we could identify the patients with high risk for the development of AF and these simple ECG parameters may help in clinical judgement to determine the requirement for treatment in the patients with subclinical hyperthyroidism.

The mobility of clusters on a semiconductor surface for various values of cluster size is studied as a function of temperature by kinetic Monte Carlo method. The cluster resides on the surface of a square grid. Kinetic processes such as the diffusion of single particles on the surface, their attachment and detachment to/from clusters, diffusion of particles along cluster edges are considered. The clusters considered in this study consist of 150-6000 atoms per cluster on average. A statistical probability of motion to each direction is assigned to each particle where a particle with four nearest neighbors is assumed to be immobile. The mobility of a cluster is found from the root mean square displacement of the center of mass of the cluster as a function of time. It is found that the diffusion coefficient of clusters goes as D = A（T）Na where N is the average number of particles in the cluster, A（T） is a temperature-dependent constant and a is a parameter with a value of about -0.64 〈 a 〈 -0.75. The value of a is found to be independent of cluster sizes and temperature values （170-220 K） considered in this study. As the diffusion along the perimeter of the cluster becomes prohibitive, the exponent approaches a value of -0.5. The diffusion coefficient is found to change by one order of magnitude as a function of cluster size.

Poly(methylmethacrylate)(PMMA)is a widely used material in dental applications,particularly as denture *** to thermally unstable and wet oral cavity,the implanted PMMA based resins occasionally deform and grow bacterial biofilms at the interface between oral cavity and the *** strategies attempted earlier to improve the bacterial resistance and mechanical performance of ***(ethyleneimine)(PEI)is a hyperbranched cationic polymer shown earlier to improve antibacterial activity of resins but do not improve mechanical properties of the resins alone,while silk fibroin(SF)is a natural biopolymer with unique material *** this study,we combined SF and PEI towards development of antibacterial and mechanically superior PMMA based materials towards overcoming its *** polyblend electrospinning to combine SF,PEI and PMMA,we successfully developed intrinsically antibacterial and mechanically reinforced nanofiber *** propose that the resulting nanofiber mats have the potential to be incorporated into PMMA based denture resin materials to overcome the problems of patients and improve their quality of life.

We investigate time domain boundary element methods for the wave equation in R3, with a view towards sound emission problems in computational acoustics. The Neumann problem is reduced to a time dependent integral equation for the hypersingular operator, and we present a priori and a posteriori error estimates for conforming Galerkin approxima- tions in the more general case of a screen. Numerical experiments validate the convergence of our boundary element scheme and compare it with the numerical approximations ob- tained from an integral equation of the second kind. Computations in a half-space illustrate the influence of the reflection properties of a flat street.

The structural diversity in urban forests is highly important to protect biodiversity. In particular, fruit trees and bush species, cavity-bearing trees and coarse, woody debris provide habitats for animals to feed, nest and hide. Improper silvicultural practices, intensive recreational use and illegal harvesting lead to a decline in the structural diversity in forests within larger metropolitan cities. It is important to monitor the structural diversity at definite time intervals using effective technologies with a view to instituting the necessary conservation measures. The use of satellite images seems to be appropriate to this end. Here we aimed to identify the associations between the textural features derived from the satellite images with different spatial resolutions and the structural diversity indices in urban forest stands (Shannon-Wiener index, complexity index, dominance index and density of wildlife trees). RapidEye images with a spatial resolution of 5 m × 5 m, ASTER images with a spatial resolution of 15 m × 15 m and Landsat-8 ETM satellite images with a spatial resolution of 30 m × 30 m were used in this study. The first-order (standard deviation of gray levels) and second order (GLCM entropy, GLCM contrast and GLCM correlation) textural features were calculated from the satellite images. When associations between textural features in the images and the structural diversity indices were assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient, very high associations were found between the image textural features and the diversity indices. The highest association was found between the standard deviation of gray levels (SDGLRAP) derived from RVIRAP of RapidEye image and the Shannon-Wiener index (H h) calculated on the basis of tree height (R 2 = 0.64). The aim of this study was to evaluate the adhesion of human fetal osteoblast cells (CRL-11372) in vitro at 24 h on commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) metal surfaces’ crystalline structure and surface roughnesses that are modified by polishing, sand blasting (with alumina (Al2o3)), sand blasting and coating (with titanium oxide (Tio2)), and sand blasting and etching (with oxalic acid). Modified surfaces were characterized quantitatively by a non-contacting optical profilometer in terms of their Rz and Ra values and surface profile diagrams were obtained. These surfaces were characterized qualitatively by scanning electron microscope (SEM) micrographs. The crystalline structures of the coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD). CRL-11372 cells were cultured for 24 h and evaluated for their mean total cell counts. Cell morphologies were examined by SEM micrographs. Data were compared by Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Post Hoc LSD test comparisons. SEM micrographs showed variations among the topographies of the surfaces and the morphologies of the cells adhered to these four different surfaces. Cell adhesion was affected by neither Ti chemical composition nor surface roughness within the Ra and Rz parameters used.
