Do brood parasitic Common Cuckoos develop brood patches during the breeding season?

Many birds develop brood patches on their ventral apterium under hormonal regulation to effectively transmit body heat to eggs during *** developed patch has several characteristics,including de-feathering,vascularization,and ***,little is known about whether avian brood parasites that do not incubate their eggs exhibit brood patch development during the breeding *** this study,we measured the size of the ventral apterium in 114 Common Cuckoos(Cuculus canorus)captured in the field throughout the breeding season and examined the appearance of the ventral apterium to confirm the development of brood *** also examined whether morphological traits and various factors correlated with the size of the ventral apterium(sternal apterium and abdominal apterium)and how it changed during the breeding *** found no clear signs of brood patch development in Common Cuckoos captured throughout the breeding season,indicating that they likely did not develop brood patches on the ventral apterium during this *** also found that ventral apterium size was positively correlated with wing length and body *** addition,Common Cuckoos with newly growing feathers on the boundary of the ventral apterium with pteryla were frequently observed as seasons progressed to the *** conclusion,Common Cuckoos exhibit neither brood patch development nor the vestigial characteristics of ancestral brood patches,except for the growth of feathers on boundary the ventral *** studies examining brood patches across different groups of avian brood parasites are valuable for enhancing our understanding of the developmental and physiological adaptations of avian brood parasites.

A Study on the Influences of the COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Depression, Anxiety, Stress, and Treatment-Crisis on Quality of Life in Cancer Patients - A Secondary Publication

Objective:To investigate the factors affecting the quality of life of cancer patients by examining the degree of the COVID-19 pandemic-related depression,anxiety,stress,and treatment ***:Data were collected from 132 cancer patients undergoing surgery,chemotherapy,radiotherapy,and hormone therapy at K University Hospital in D City using a structured *** period of data collection was from May 6 to May 28,*** collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics,t-test,ANOVA,Pearson’s correlation,and stepwise multiple ***:The mean scores of quality-of-life,depression,anxiety,stress,and treatment crisis during the COVID-19 pandemic were 84.64±29.09,15.14±6.49,4.66±5.27,75.83±17.70,and 78.52±19.95,*** terms of factors affecting the quality of life related to the COVID-19 pandemic,COVID-19 pandemic-related stress(β=0.41,P<0.001)appeared to have the greatest impact,followed by COVID-19 pandemic-related treatment-crisis(β=0.28,P=0.002),anxiety(β=0.21,P=0.002),and gender(β=0.14,P=0.009),with a total explanatory power of 67.6%.Conclusion:To improve the quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic,COVID-19 pandemic-related stress,treatment-crisis,and anxiety should be periodically monitored and nursing interventions such as education on infection prevention,management,and emotional support programs should be provided to decrease the COVID-19 pandemic-related stress,treatment-crisis,and anxiety.

A survey on the real-world clinical utilization of a traditional acupuncture in Republic of Korea: Sa-am acupuncture

Objective: This study investigated the clinical details and usage of Sa-am acupuncture in Korean medicine clinics and explored how practicing Korean medicine doctors(KMDs) think about Sa-am ***: We conducted a questionnaire-based survey of KMDs who utilize Sa-am acupuncture in their practice. The study comprehensively investigated issues related to clinical application of Sa-am acupuncture, needling techniques used during treatment, training methods, and directions for its future ***: We analyzed 572 responses. An average of 50% of the patients visiting Korean medicine clinics were receiving Sa-am acupuncture. The most prevalent indication for Sa-am acupuncture use was digestive disorders. The patients' appetite level and digestive function were most frequently used indicators for selecting acupuncture points. Regarding prescription compositions, Jung-Gyuk formulas were more frequently used than Seung-Gyuk formulas. Inserting the needle along the flow of the channel or against the flow of the channel was most popular. The acupuncture style most frequently used in combination with Sa-am acupuncture was Ashi point acupuncture. Strengths of Sa-am acupuncture included its versatility, easy application, and good outcomes. Limitations included the lack of rigorous education and training programs,difficulty in applying the principles for beginners, and insufficient clinical research ***: In clinics where Sa-am acupuncture is available, KMDs were providing Sa-am acupuncture to about half of their patients. Practitioners were not using all of the tonification and sedation techniques which may be due to time constraints or simply a lack of necessity. Sa-am acupuncture demonstrated high utility in clinical practice and high satisfaction based on the efficacy and safety. More training programs and high-quality research are needed to help expand the use of Sa-am acupuncture.

Preoperative risk factors for early recurrence in patients with resectable pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma after curative intent surgical resection

Background: Postoperative early recurrence(ER) in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC) is frequently encountered after curative intent surgery. Nonetheless, clinical significance and risk factors of ER after surgery for PDAC have not been extensively investigated. The aim of this study was to determine preoperative risk predictors for ER in patients with PDAC after upfront surgery. Methods: Eighty-one consecutive patients with PDAC who underwent curative intent surgical resection at Kangbuk Samsung Hospital between January 2004 and May 2015 were enrolled. ER was defined as tumor relapse within 6 months after surgery. Results: ER occurred in 26 patients(32.1%), whereas 49 patients(60.5%) had late recurrence( ≥ 6 months after surgery), and 6 patients had no recurrence(7.4%). Univariate analysis showed that C-reactive protein(CRP) > 3.0 mg/dL, modified Glasgow prognostic score(mGPS) = 2, decrease of total lymphocyte count by > 50% of baseline value in the preoperative period, prognostic nutritional index(PNI) 3.0 mg/dL, decrease of total lymphocyte count by > 50% of baseline value, and preoperative SUVmax were significant and independent contributors of ER in patients with resectable PDAC who underwent curative intent surgery. Conclusions: Postoperative ER for resectable PDAC was frequent with poor prognosis after curative intent upfront surgery. It is reasonable to suggest that there is a subgroup of resectable PDAC patients at highrisk of ER and neoadjuvant therapy should be considered in these patients in a clinical trial setting.

Seasonal Prediction of Monthly Precipitation in China Using Large-Scale Climate Indices

In this study, seasonal predictions were applied to precipitation in China on a monthly basis based on a multivariate linear regression with an adaptive choice of predictors drawn from regularly updated climate indices with a two to twelve month lead time. A leave-one-out cross validation was applied to obtain hindcast skill at a 1% significance level. The skill of forecast models at a monthly scale and their significance levels were evaluated using Anomaly Correlation Coefficients （ACC） and Coefficients Of Determination （COD）. The monthly ACC skill ranged between 0.43 and 0.50 in Central China, 0.41-0.57 in East China, and 0.41 0.60 in South China. The dynamic link between large-scale climate indices with lead time and the precipitation in China is also discussed based on Singular Value Decomposition Analysis （SVDA） and Correlation Analysis （CA）.

Amid the growing interest in triboelectric nanogenerators(TENGs)as novel energy-harvesting devices,several studies have focused on direct current(DC)TENGs to generate a stable DC output for operating electronic ***,owing to the working mechanisms of conventional DC TENGs,generating a stable DC output from reciprocating motion remains a ***,we propose a bidirectional rotating DC TENG(BiR-TENG),which can generate DC outputs,regardless of the direction of rotation,from reciprocating *** distinct design of the BiR-TENG enables the mechanical rectification of the alternating current output into a rotational-direction-dependent DC ***,it allows the conversion of the rotational-direction-dependent DC output into a unidirectional DC output by adapting the configurations depending on the rotational *** to these tailored design strategies and subsequent optimizations,the BiR-TENG could generate an effective unidirectional DC *** of the BiR-TENG for the reciprocating motions of swinging doors and waves were demonstrated by harnessing this *** study demonstrates the potential of the BiR-TENG design strategy as an effective and versatile solution for energy harvesting from reciprocating motions,highlighting the suitability of DC outputs as an energy source for electronic devices.

Multilayer Strategy for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Generation:New Electrode Architecture that Alleviates Multiple Bottlenecks

Years of research have demonstrated that the use of multiple components is essential to the development of a commercial photoelectrode to address specific bottlenecks,such as low charge separation and injection efficiency,low carrier diffusion length and lifetime,and poor durability.A facile strategy for the synthesis of multilayered photoanodes from atomic-layer-deposited ultrathin films has enabled a new type of electrode architecture with a total multilayer thickness of 15–17 *** illustrate the advantages of this electrode architecture by using nanolayers to address different bottlenecks,thus producing a multilayer photoelectrode with improved interface kinetics and shorter electron transport path,as determined by interface *** photocurrent density was twice that of the bare structure and reached a maximum of 33.3±2.1 mA cm^(−2) at 1.23 *** integrated overall water-splitting cell consisting of an electrocatalytic NiS cathode and Bi_(2)S_(3)/NiS/NiFeO/TiO_(2) photoanode was used for precious-metal-free seawater splitting at a cell voltage of 1.23 V without *** results and root analyses suggest that the distinctive advantages of the electrode architecture,which are superior to those of bulk bottom-up core–shell and hierarchical architectures,originate from the high density of active sites and nanometer-scale layer thickness,which enhance the suitability for interface-oriented energy conversion processes.

PagMYB128 regulates secondary cell wall formation by direct activation of cell wall biosynthetic genes during wood formation in poplar

The biosynthesis of cellulose,lignin,and hemicelluloses in plant secondary cell walls(SCWs)is regulated by a hierarchical transcriptional regulatory *** network features orthologous transcription factors shared between poplar and Arabidopsis,highlighting a foundational similarity in their genetic ***,knowledge on the discrepant behavior of the transcriptional-level molecular regulatory mechanisms between poplar and Arabidopsis remains *** this study,we investigated the function of PagMYB128 during wood formation and found it had broader impacts on SCW formation compared to its Arabidopsis ortholog,*** poplar trees overexpressing PagMYB128 exhibited significantly enhanced xylem development,with fiber cells and vessels displaying thicker walls,and an increase in the levels of cellulose,lignin,and hemicelluloses in the *** contrast,plants with dominant repression of PagMYB128 demonstrated the opposite *** sequencing and reverse transcription–quantitative polymerase chain reaction showed that PagMYB128 could activate SCW biosynthetic gene expression,and chromatin immunoprecipitation along with yeast one-hybrid,and effector–reporter assays showed this regulation was *** analysis revealed that PagSND1(SECONDARY WALL-ASSOCIATED NAC-DOMAIN PROTEIN1)directly regulates PagMYB128 but not cell wall metabolic genes,highlighting the pivotal role of PagMYB128 in the SND1-driven regulatory network for wood development,thereby creating a feedforward loop in SCW biosynthesis.

There has been a lot of basic and clinical research on Alzheimer’s disease(AD)over the last 100 years,but its mechanisms and treatments have not been fully *** some controversies,the amyloid-beta hypothesis is one of the most widely accepted causes of *** this study,we disclose a new amyloid-beta plaque disaggregating agent and an AD brain-targeted delivery system using porous silicon nanoparticles(pSiNPs)as a therapeutic nano-platform to overcome *** hypothesized that the negatively charged sulfonic acid functional group could disaggregate plaques and construct a chemical *** a result of the in vitro assay of amyloid plaques and library screening,we confirmed that 6-amino-2-naphthalenesulfonic acid(ANA)showed the highest efficacy for plaque disaggregation as a hit *** confirm the targeted delivery of ANA to the AD brain,a nano-platform was created using porous silicon nanoparticles(pSiNPs)with ANA loaded into the pore of pSiNPs and biotin-polyethylene glycol(PEG)surface *** resulting nano-formulation,named Biotin-CaCl2-ANA-pSiNPs(BCAP),delivered a large amount of ANA to the AD brain and ameliorated memory impairment of the AD mouse model through the disaggregation of amyloid plaques in the *** study presents a new bioactive small molecule for amyloid plaque disaggregation and its promising therapeutic nano-platform for AD brain-targeted delivery.

PopFlow:a novel flow management scheme for SDN switch of multiple flow tables based on flow popularity

Pipeline processing is applied to mutiple flow tables(MFT)in the switch of software-defined network(SDN)to increase the throughput of the ***,the processing time of each flow increases as the size or number of flow tables gets *** this paper we propose a novel approach called PopFlow where a table keeping popular flow entries is located up front in the pipeline,and an express path is provided for the flow matching the table.A Markov model is employed for the selection of popular entries considering the match latency and match frequency,and Queuing theory is used to model the flow processing time of the existing MFT-based schemes and the proposed *** simulation reveals that the proposed scheme substantially reduces the flow processing time compared to the existing schemes,and the diference gets more significant as the flow arrival rate increases.
