Co-Occurring Plant Species of the West African Critically Endangered Aubregrinia taïensis Heine, in Côte d’Ivoire

The Upper Guinea Forest is subject to heavy deforestation. In this context, many endemic and/or rare plant species are threatened with extinction. This is the case of Aubregrinia taïensis (Aubrév. & Pellegr.) Heine, a critically endangered Sapotaceae species, endemic to Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. After 3 years of investigation in and around the Tai National Park (TNP) in the West of Côte d’Ivoire, only one individual of this species was located and no sexual reproductive organs (fruits, seeds) were observed. Woody plant species around this individual were inventoried in order to know the species that can co-occur with Aubregrinia taïensis. For that a plot of 30 m of diameter was established around the individual and all of the woody species of this circle were inventoried. Then, the taxonomic diversity, the chorology of the species, the conservation status and their life-form were recorded. A total of 130 woody plant species belonging to 51 families were collected in the site. The most represented families are Euphorbiaceae (12 spp.), Rubiaceae (10 spp.), Annonaceae (7 spp.), Fabaceae, Moraceae, Malvaceae (6 spp. each) while the most represented genera are Diospyros L. (4 spp.), Cola Schott & Endl. and Vitex L. (3 spp.). Species from the Guineo-Congolese Region (GC) are the most abundant (72%). They are followed by West African endemic species (GCW, 19%). Microphanerophytes (mp) are the most abundant and represent more than 40% of the species. Three vulnerable species were found in this plot: Campylospermum amplectens, Placodiscus boya and Trichoscypha cavalliensis. Thus, the preservation of this forest is more than necessary.

Increasing the detail of European land use/cover data by combining heterogeneous data sets

Data on land use and land cover(LULC)are a vital input for policy-relevant research,such as modelling of the human population,socioeconomic activities,transportation,environment,and their interactions.In Europe,CORINE Land Cover has been the only data set covering the entire continent consistently,but with rather limited spatial detail.Other data sets have provided much better detail,but either have covered only a fraction of Europe(e.g.Urban Atlas)or have been thematically restricted(e.g.Copernicus High Resolution Layers).In this study,we processed and combined diverse LULC data to create a harmonised,ready-to-use map covering 41 countries.By doing so,we increased the spatial detail(from 25 to one hectare)and the thematic detail(by seven additional LULC classes)compared to the CORINE Land Cover.Importantly,we decomposed the class‘Industrial and commercial units’into‘Production facilities’,‘Commercial/service facilities’and‘Public facilities’using machine learning to exploit a large database of points of interest.The overall accuracy of this thematic breakdown was 74%,despite the confusion between the production and commercial land uses,often attributable to noisy training data or mixed land uses.Lessons learnt from this exercise are discussed,and further research direction is proposed.

Study of Malaria in Patients Operated on at the Reference Health Center of Commune I Bamako

Malaria is a febrile and hemolyzing erythrocytopathy due to the development and multiplication of one or more of the five plasmodial species dependent on humans: Plasmodium falciparum, P. malariae, P. ovale, P. vivax and P. knowlesi. These parasites are inoculated into humans by the infective bite of a female mosquito, female anopheles of the genus Anopheles, during a blood meal. The study aimed to: determine the frequency of fever due to malaria after surgery;describe malaria symptomatology and clinical evolution after surgical intervention;determine the average length of hospital stay for operated patients with malaria;evaluate the average cost of malaria treatment. This was a prospective study which involved 110 operated patients, which took place over a period of 12 months from March 2017 to February 2018 in the general surgery department at the Reference Health Center of commune I of the Bamako district. The frequency of malaria was 11.82% before the intervention and 3.64% after the intervention, with an average age of 29.80 years;extremes of 2 years and 76 years and a sex ratio of 1.5 in favor of the male sex. The main clinical signs were fever (38.18%), headache (20.91%) and vomiting (36.36%) and physical asthenia (18.18%). Diagnosed and treated early, malaria progressed favorably. The outcome was simple for all our patients and we did not record any deaths. The cost of treatment was borne by the patients and/or their families. The average cost of treatment was 7915 CFA francs, significantly below the Malian minimum wage which is around 30,000 FCFA. The implementation of preventive measures is necessary to reduce the importance of malaria in hospitals: staff awareness, indoor spraying, use of impregnated mosquito nets.

Fungal Flora on Weeds in the Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) Orchard in Côte d’Ivoire

Since 2015, Côte d’Ivoire has been the world’s largest cashew producer. However, cashew orchards in Côte d’Ivoire are infected by fungal diseases that weaken production. And the contribution of weeds to the spread of these diseases is not yet understood. This study was initiated with the aim of establishing the role of weeds in the proliferation of pathogenic fungi in orchards. It consisted of a survey of weeds showing disease symptoms in cashew orchards in Côte d’Ivoire from February 2021 to July 2022. The itinerant method was used for the weed inventory. Symptomatic leaves were collected and sent to the laboratory for diagnosis on PDA (Potatoes Dextrose Agar) medium. In total, 50 species in 46 genera and 23 families were recorded. Laboratory diagnosis of the samples showed that 80% of the weeds identified harboured pathogenic fungi. The highest infection rates were obtained on Danielia oliveri R. (99.33% to 100%), Vitellaria paradoxa G. (100%), Pterocarpus erinaceus P. (83.91% to 99.33%), Micuna pruriens L. (98.33% to 100%) and Isoberlinia doka C. et S. (56.33% to 100%). The diagnosis revealed the presence of Lasiodiplodia sp, Colletotrichum sp, Pestalotia sp, Alternaria sp and Curvularia sp on weeds in the cashew orchard in Côte d’Ivoire.

Angiomyolipomas(AMLs),a form of benign mesenchymal hamartoma,arise primarily in the kidneys of patients with or without tuberous sclerosis.Extra-renal AMLs are very rare and are most commonly found in the liver. AMLs of the small intestine are exceedingly rare.Here, a case of a 28-year-old man,who presented with ileal intussusception caused by ileal AML is reported.The clinicopathological and immunohistochemical findings of ileal AMLs are discussed and the literature on small intestinal AMLs is reviewed.

Helicobacter pylori Infection and Gastroduodenal Lesions: Prevalence and Associated Factors in Cote d’Ivoire

Objective: The objective is to determine the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and highlight the determinants of the infection as well as the gastric histopathological lesions associated with this infection. Methods: This is a retrospective study carried out from August 01, 2015 to December 31, 2020 in Bouaké. It included all patients with gastric and/or duodenal lesion on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in whom gastric biopsies and histopathology results are available. Results: The study involved 510 patients (301 men and 209 women). The prevalence of Hp was 66.47% (339/510 patients). The presence of Hp was not significantly related to age and gender. Epigastralgia was the most common indication with no significant difference between the positive and negative Hp groups (65.37% vs 34.63%, p = 0.35). A significant difference was only observed for duodenal ulcers (84.31% Hp+ vs 15.69% Hp-, p = 0.004). Regarding histological lesions: Chronic and active gastritis was strongly related to the presence of Hp (p < 0.05). Intestinal metaplasia and gastric atrophy were not significantly associated with the presence of Hp. These precursor lesions of gastric cancer (metaplasia and atrophy) were, however, significantly related to chronic gastric disease with p = 0.02 and p Conclusion: The prevalence of Hp is high in Bouaké. Our study confirms the link between Hp infection and chronic and active gastritis.

Malware Detection Using Deep Learning

Malware represents a real threat to information systems, because of the damage it causes. This threat is growing today, as these programs take on more complex forms. This means they escape traditional malware detection methods. Hence the need for artificial intelligence, more specifically Deep Learning, which could detect malware more effectively. In this article, we’ve proposed a model for malware detection using artificial neural networks. Our approach used data from the characteristics of machines, particularly computers, to train our Deep Learning algorithm. This model demonstrated an accuracy of around 83% in predicting the presence of malware on a machine. Thus, the use of artificial neural networks for malware detection has shown his ability to assimilate complex, non-linear patterns from data.

Revision of bilateral self-expandable metallic stents placed using the stent-in-stent technique for malignant hilar biliary obstruction

Background: Endoscopic biliary decompression using bilateral self-expandable metallic stent(SEMS) placed using the stent-in-stent(SIS) technique is considered favorable for unresectable malignant hilar biliary obstruction(MHBO). However, occlusion of the bilateral SIS placement is frequent and revision can be challenging. This study was performed to investigate the efficacy, the long-term patency and the appropriate approach for revision of occluded bilateral SIS placement in unresectable MHBO. Methods: From January 2011 to July 2016, thirty-eight patients with unresectable MHBO underwent revision of occluded bilateral SIS placement. Clinical data including success rates and patency of revision, were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The technical success rate of revision was 76.3%. The clinical success rate of revision was 51.7% and mean patency of revision was 49.1 days. No significant predictive factor for clinical failure of revision was observed. The cell size of SEMS was not found to have significant effects on clinical success rates or revision patency. Conclusions: Revision of occluded bilateral SIS placement for MHBO showed fair patency and clinical success rate. Revision method and cell size of SEMS were not found to influence clinical outcomes.

Wearable pressure sensors having versatile device structures have been extensively investigated to achieve high sensitivity under mechanical stimuli.Here,we introduce piezoelectric pressure sensors based on fabrics woven using polyvinylidene fluoride(PVDF)weft and polyethylene terephthalate(PET)warp yarns with different weave structures:1/1(plain),2/2,and 3/3 weft rib patterns.The dependence of the pressure-sensing performance on the weave pattern is demonstrated with an actual large-scale fabric up to the~2 m scale.An optimized pressure sensor with a 2/2 weft rib pattern produced a high sensitivity of 83 mV N−1,which was 245%higher than that of the 1/1 pattern.The detection performance of the optimal fabric was extensively evaluated with a variety of ambient input sources,such as pressing,bending,twisting,and crumpling,as well as various human motions.Further,a large allfabric pressure sensor with arrayed touch pixel units demonstrated highly sensitive and stable sensing performance.

Folfirinox chemotherapy prolongs stent patency in patients with malignant biliary obstruction due to unresectable pancreatic cancer

Background:Stent insertion for biliary decompression to relieve jaundice and subsequent biliary infection is necessary for patients with biliary obstruction caused by pancreatic cancer,and it is important to keep the stent patent as long as possible.However,few studies have compared stent patency in terms of chemotherapy in patients with pancreatic cancer.This study aimed to evaluate the differences in stent patency in terms of recently evolving chemotherapy.Methods:Between January 2015 and May 2017,161 patients with pancreatic cancer who had undergone biliary stent insertion with a metal stent were retrospectively analyzed.The relationship between chemotherapy and stent patency was assessed.Additionally,overall survival according to the treatment,risk factors for stent patency,and long-term adverse events were evaluated.Results:Median stent patency was 42 days for patients with the best supportive care and 217 days for patients with chemotherapy(conventional gemcitabine-based chemotherapy and folfirinox)(P<0.001).Furthermore,the folfirinox group showed the longest median stent patency and overall survival,with 283 days and 466 days,respectively(P<0.001)despite higher adverse events rate.Patients who underwent folfirinox chemotherapy after stent insertion had better stent patency in multivariate analysis(HR=0.26;95%CI:0.12–0.60;P=0.001).Conclusions:Compared with patients who received best supportive care only,patients who underwent chemotherapy after stent insertion had better stent patency.More prolonged stent patency can be expected for patients with folfirinox than conventional gemcitabine-based chemotherapy.
