Due to acidic solutions aggressiveness, corrosion inhibitors use is considered to be one the most practical methods to delay metals dissolution in the said solutions. In this study benzimidazolyl derivative namely 2-cyanochalcones 2-(5-nitro-1,3-dihydrobenzimidazol-2-ylidene)-3-oxo-3-(2-oxo-2H-chromen-3-yl) propanenitrile which was synthesized was then applied as a corrosion inhibitor for copper in 1 M HNO3 solution. The inhibition action of this molecule was evaluated by gravimetric and density functional theory (DFT) methods. It was found experimentally that this compound has a better inhibition performance and its adsorption on copper surface follows Langmuir adsorption isotherm. This adsorption evolves with temperature and inhibitor concentration, it is endothermic and occurs spontaneously with an increase in disorder. Corrosion kinetic parameters analysis supported by Adejo-Ekwenchi model revealed the existence of both physisorption and chemisorption. DFT calculations related that compound adsorption on copper surface is due to its electron donating and accepting capacity. The reactive regions specifying the electrophilic and nucleophilic attack sites were analyzed using Fukui and dual descriptor functions. Experimental results obtained were compared with the theoretical findings.

Dear Editor, Disorders of sex development （DSDs） are a group of conditions in which chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical.1 DSD in genetic males （46,XY DSD） primarily results from impaired androgen production or action or perturbed genital morphogenesis？ The current understanding of the genetic basis of 46,XY DSD remains fragmentary. For example, although more than 15 genes have been implicated in the development ofnonsyndromic hypospadias,2 one of the most common forms of 46,XY DSD,~ mutations in these genes account for 〈20% of the cases.3

This work was carried out on a series of twenty-two (22) benzimidazole derivatives with inhibitory activities against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv by applying the Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) method. The molecules were optimized at the level DFT/B3LYP/6-31 + G (d, p), to obtain the molecular descriptors. We used three statistical learning tools namely, the linear multiple regression (LMR) method, the nonlinear regression (NLMR) and the artificial neural network (ANN) method. These methods allowed us to obtain three (3) quantitative models from the quantum descriptors that are, chemical potential (μ), polarizability (α), bond length l (C = N), and lipophilicity. These models showed good statistical performance. Among these, the ANN has a significantly better predictive ability R2 = 0.9995;RMSE = 0.0149;F = 31879.0548. The external validation tests verify all the criteria of Tropsha et al. and Roy et al. Also, the internal validation tests show that the model has a very satisfactory internal predictive character and can be considered as robust. Moreover, the applicability range of this model determined from the levers shows that a prediction of the pMIC of the new benzimidazole derivatives is acceptable when its lever value is lower than 1.

Background Universal access to basic sanitation remains a global challenge,particularly in low-and middle-income countries.Efforts are underway to improve access to sanitation in informal settlements,often through shared facilities.However,access to these facilities and their potential health gains—notably,the prevention of diarrheal diseases—may be hampered by contextual aspects related to the physical environment.This study explored associations between the built environment and perceived safety to access toilets,and associations between the latter and diarrheal infections.Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out between July 2021 and February 2022,including 1714 households in two informal settlements in Abidjan(Côte d’Ivoire)and two in Nairobi(Kenya).We employed adjusted odds ratios(aORs)obtained from multiple logistic regressions(MLRs)to test whether the location of the most frequently used toilet was associated with a perceived lack of safety to use the facility at any time,and whether this perceived insecurity was associated with a higher risk of diarrhea.The MLRs included several exposure and control variables,being stratified by city and age groups.We employed bivariate logistic regressions to test whether the perceived insecurity was associated with settlement morphology indicators derived from the built environment.Results Using a toilet outside the premises was associated with a perceived insecurity both in Abidjan[aOR=3.14,95%confidence interval(CI):1.13–8.70]and in Nairobi(aOR=57.97,95%CI:35.93–93.53).Perceived insecurity to access toilets was associated with diarrheal infections in the general population(aOR=1.90,95%CI:1.29–2.79 in Abidjan,aOR=1.69,95%CI:1.22–2.34 in Nairobi),but not in children below the age of 5 years.Several settlement morphology features were associated with perceived insecurity,namely,buildings’compactness,the proportion of occupied land,and angular deviation between neighboring structures.Conclusions Toilet location was a critical determinant of perceived security,and h

Probiotification of plant milk can improve its sensory and health-promoting properties. As traditional fermented foods where lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are present have been associated with beneficial effects on human health, the beneficial effects of two LAB recently isolated from two current Ivorian staple foods (a pepper and a traditional beer) were screened. These two strains LAC 1 (Lactobacillus plantarum) and LAC 2 (Pediococcus acidilactici) which presented probiotic, exopolysaccharides, inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities, were used to ferment a composite plant milk of tiger-nut and cashew (80/20) compared to two starters of a commercial yogourt. The obtained plant milks SCT 2 and SCT 3 with a significant increase in their antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory activities and lactic bacteria contents were more preferred by consumers than SCT 1 obtained by fermentation of the commercial yogourt starters. The mixing of LAC 1 and LAC 2 was not beneficial. SCT 2 (with an anti-inflammatory activity of 31.38% and an anti-oxidant activity of 17.30%) and SCT 3 (with an anti-oxidant activity of 22.28) could be further tested in animal models to verify their nutrition-health claims.

Otological Injuries Observed in Head and Neck Trauma in a Second-Line Hospital

Otological injuries are common during cervicofacial trauma. The aim of this study is to describe the epidemiological characteristics and to map otological injuries during head and neck trauma. This was an observational, descriptive, prospective study conducted at the ENT unit of the Referral Health Center Hospital in Mali from January 2017 to September 2018. Patients with middle and/or inner ear injuries due to trauma were included. The prevalence of otologic injuries was 34.54% of cases. The mean age was 25 years and the sex ratio was 1.11. Students accounted for 42.10%. The mechanism of occurrence was an intentional assault in 68.42% of the cases followed by road traffic accidents (15.79%). The most common functional signs were hearing loss (68.42%), tinnitus (57.89%), and facial paralysis in 5.26%. Otoscopy showed tympanic perforation (47.83%), otorrhagia (21.05%) and otoliquorrhea (5.26%). Rock fractures with osteodural breach (10.53%) and pneumencephaly were found on a CT scan of the rock. The evolution was marked by the regression of the facial paralysis and the healing of the tympanum in 45.45% of the cases. Sequelae persisted in the form of sensorineural deafness (17%). The otological lesions observed during cervicofacial trauma are varied. The challenges in our context are felt at three levels: the improvement of the technical platform, the long-term follow-up of patients, and the cost of care in terms of equipment. These lesions are responsible for disabling deafness, a source of difficulty in social and school integration.

Botanical gardens represent important places for ex situ conservation.One of these botanical gardens has been abandoned in Côte d’Ivoire for 30 years.This is the former botanical garden of ORSTOM.This study was conducted to determine the level of diversity of this former garden in order to assess the opportunity for its rehabilitation.The authors carried out inventories in 18 quadrats of 500 m2 through the vegetation to collect woody species.Dendrometric measurements(height,diameter)were also recorded to assess the structure of the site.A total of 190 species have been identified.They belong to 141 genera and 47 families.This former botanical garden contains important species because of their origin,status or particularity(threatened,endemic,rarity,etc.).A total of 19 threatened species including 2 endangered and west African endemic(Chrysophyllum azaguieanum J.Miège,Placodiscus pseudostipularis)were found at the site.Also,Chrysophyllum azaguieanum is declared extinct from Côte d’Ivoire.Four species are rare in the flora of Côte d’Ivoire:Balanites wilsoniana,Chrysophyllum azaguieanum,Gilletiodendron kisantuense and Loesenera kalantha.The most abundant species is Hopea odorata.Although this introduced species is considered globally vulnerable,it presents a risk of invasion in the forest of Côte d’Ivoire.The diameter and height structures show that all the stages of development are presented indicating a good regeneration on the site.Ultimately,this botanical garden deserves to be rehabilitated and especially urgent management of Hopea odorata is needed to prevent an invasion of this species.

Background Schistosomiasis remains an important public health problem,also among adults,and infected individuals not treated serve as a reservoir for continued transmission.Despite this fact,evidence on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in adults in Côte d’Ivoire is scanty.This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of Schistosoma infection and co-infection with other helminth species and Plasmodium among adults in the Taabo region in the south-central part of Côte d’Ivoire.Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out in April and May 2017 in the frame of the“Côte d’Ivoire Dual Burden of Disease Study”(CoDuBu).A total of 901 randomly selected individuals,aged 18–90 years,provided blood,stool and urine samples for the diagnosis of malaria and helminth infections.Stool samples were subjected to the Kato-Katz technique for detection of Schistosoma mansoni and soil-transmitted helminth eggs,while urine samples were examined for eggs of Schistosoma haematobium and circulating cathodic antigen of S.mansoni.Risk factors and morbidity profiles were assessed using health examination and questionnaires.Multinomial logistic regressions were employed to identify risk factors and morbidity patterns associated with S.mansoni mono-and co-infections.Results The prevalence of S.mansoni and S.haematobium was 23.2%and 1.0%,respectively.Most S.mansoni were mono-infections(81.3%).Independent determinants of S.mansoni infection were young age,low socioeconomic status(mono-and co-infection)and poor hygiene practices(co-infection)(P<0.05).S.mansoni infection was independently associated with higher pain and symptom scores(mono-infection),poor self-rated health and low healthcare use(co-infection)(P<0.05).Conclusions This study showed that adults represent a substantial reservoir of S.mansoni.To sustain schistosomiasis control and improve people’s wellbeing,it is important to expand preventive chemotherapy from school-aged children to adults,coupled with hygiene and health education.

We report on the design and characterization of the plasma mirror system installed on the J-KAREN-P laser at the Kansai Photon Science Institute,National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology.The reflectivity of the single plasma mirror system exceeded 80%.In addition,the temporal contrast was improved by two orders of magnitude at 1 ps before the main pulse.Furthermore,the laser near-field spatial distribution after the plasma mirror was kept constant at plasma mirror fluence of less than 100 kJ/cm^(2).We also present the results of investigating the difference and the fluctuation in energy,pulse width and pointing stability with and without the plasma mirror system.
