Prevalence and ecological factors affecting the distribution of plant-parasitic nematodes in Prunus groves in Spain

A wide survey was conducted to study plant-parasitic nematodes(PPNs)associated with Prunus groves in *** research aimed to determine the prevalence and distribution of PPNs in Prunus groves,as well as the influence of explanatory variables describing soil,climate and agricultural management in structuring the variation of PPNs community composition.A total of 218 sampling sites were surveyed and 84 PPN species belonging to 32 genera were identified based of an integrative taxonomic *** species considered as potential limiting factors in Prunus production,such as Meloidogyne arenaria,***,***,Pratylenchus penetrans and ***,were identified in this *** soil physico-chemical(C,Mg,N,Na,OM,P,pH and clay,loamy sand and sandy loam texture classes),four climate(Bio04,Bio05,Bio13 and Bio14)and four agricultural management variables(grove-use history less than 10 years,irrigation,apricot seedling rootstock,and Montclar rootstock)were identified as the most influential variables driving spatial patterns of PPNs *** particular,younger plantations showed higher values for species richness and diversity indices than groves cultivated for more than 20 years with Prunus *** study increases the knowledge of the distribution and prevalence of PPNs associated with Prunus rhizosphere,as well as on the influence of explanatory variables driving the spatial structure PPNs communities,which has important implications for the successful design of sustainable management strategies in the future in this agricultural system.

Desmodus rotundus and Diphylla ecaudata, both of which are mammals of the order Chiroptera, Desmodontidae family, their diet consisting exclusively of blood. D. rotundus is the main vector and transmitter of the rabies virus, which affects human beings as well as several livestock species so the study of this bat species is of high importance within the fields of animal agriculture and public health. The present study describes and compares the histologic characteristics of the urinary system of two hematophagous bat species. A total of 5 bats from each species were captured in the municipalities of Progreso de Obregón, Hidalgo (D. rotundus), and Huayacocotla, Veracruz (D. ecaudata). Organs belonging to the urinary system were extracted: kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra;samples were fixed using 10% formalin and processed by the paraffin embedding technique, obtaining sections of 5 µm thickness, which in turn were stained using hematoxylin-eosin (H-E) and Gomori trichrome (GT) stains. From the obtained histologic preparations, a descriptive and comparative analysis of the structural organography of the urinary system of both species was made, and no noteworthy histological differences between samples were noted. The present research is intended to provide a framework for future studies of these species’ currently understudied microscopic anatomy.

Body Contour in the Post-Bariatric Male Patient

Background: Obesity is currently considered a public health problem. Bariatric procedures have become an important part of obesity management and, consequently, the number of male patients seeking post-bariatric reconstructive procedures have increased. Therefore, the clinical approach and understanding of the body contour of this population have become more relevant. The goal of post-bariatric reconstruction is to enhance the male silhouette through removal of skin and adipose tissue excess, and abdominal rectus diastasis repair. Material and Methods: We conducted a retrospective study at the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department of the National Medical Center “20 de Noviembre”. All male patients referred to our department to start a post-bariatric reconstruction protocol from January 2018 to December 2022 were included in this study. Results: In total, 15 patients who underwent corporal contouring procedures were included;median age was 49.2 years with minimum of 33 years, and a maximum of 57 years. Median Body mass index was 28.4 kg/m2 with minimum of 22 kg/m2 and maximum of 38 kg/m2. All patients were treated 18 months after their bariatric surgery. All patients underwent an abdominoplasty as a body contouring procedure. 4 (26.7%) patients presented complications related to the surgery. Conclusion: We described a comprehensive and systematic approach to massive weight loss for male patients, suggesting an abdominal marking based on the patient’s clinical features and the expected results avoiding feminization of the abdominal body contour.

Sex and habitat differences in size and coloration of an amphibian’s poison glands match differential predator pressures

Chemical defenses are frequently accompanied by salient color patterns actively avoided by predators,a phe-nomenon referred to as ***,the production of both chemical defenses and pigments is costly,and is thus expected to be reduced under mild predator *** this work,I compared the size and coloration of parotoid glands(2 dorsal,external swollen structures that secrete toxins in toads)of male and female Epidalea calamita toads from agrosystems and from pine groves.I also quantiﬁed the predator attacks received by plas-ticine toad models,whose“parotoid glands”differed in size and color conspicuousness,exposed in each *** avoided models with large and conspicuous parotoid glands,but models in agrosystems were more of-ten *** actual toads,agrosystem and male individuals had larger parotoid glands,presumably implying greater production of chemical defenses than in pine grove and female conspeciﬁ***ﬁndings are aligned with previous research suggesting that both agrosystem toads and males in this system are subjected to a more intense predator *** between parotoid gland and dorsum coloration was greater in agrosys-tem toads.A marked internal pattern could function as an aposematic signal,which could counteract increased predator pressure.

The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai submarine volcano has experienced repeated eruptions in the latest *** recent one,in January 2022,released an enormous amount of energy inducing global perturbations,as tsunamis and atmospheric *** structure of the volcano is poorly understood,especially its internal ***-seated magmatic connections are difficult to define or *** use a high-resolution gravity data set obtained via satellite to calculate the Bouguer anomaly over its structure,to perform a preliminary exploration of its *** 3D gravity inversions,we find a complex plumbing system with various exhaust trajectories and multiple surface pockets of low-density material within the volcanic edifice;some appear to be associated with ring *** is in line with the report of the 2009 eruption,described as beginning from multiple *** found no signs of a magma chamber within 6 km depth,although several volcanic conduits are identified from such depth to the *** variations occur within a plumbing conduit or may vary from one conduit to another in the same *** models yield quantitative estimates for areas of magma-water interaction,constituting a baseline to compare with structural changes to be induced in future eruptions.

Diversity-accuracy assessment of multiple classifier systems for the land cover classification of the Khumbu region in the Himalayas

Land cover classification of mountainous environments continues to be a challenging remote sensing problem,owing to landscape complexities exhibited by the *** study explored a multiple classifier system(MCS)approach to the classification of mountain land cover for the Khumbu region in the Himalayas using Sentinel-2 images and a cloud-based model *** relationship between classification accuracy and MCS diversity was investigated,and the effects of different diversification and combination methods on MCS classification performance were comparatively assessed for this *** present ten MCS models that implement a homogeneous ensemble approach,using the high performing Random Forest(RF)algorithm as the selected *** base classifiers of each MCS model were developed using different combinations of three diversity techniques:(1)distinct training sets,(2)Mean Decrease Accuracy feature selection,and(3)‘One-vs-All’problem *** base classifier predictions of each RFMCS model were combined using:(1)majority vote,(2)weighted argmax,and(3)a meta RF *** MCS models reported higher classification accuracies than the benchmark classifier(overall accuracy with 95% confidence interval:87.33%±0.97%),with the highest performing model reporting an overall accuracy(±95% confidence interval)of 90.95%±0.84%.Our key findings include:(1)MCS is effective in mountainous environments prone to noise from landscape complexities,(2)problem reduction is indicated as a stronger method over feature selection in improving the diversity of the MCS,(3)although the MCS diversity and accuracy have a positive correlation,our results suggest this is a weak relationship for mountainous classifications,and(4)the selected diversity methods improve the discriminability of MCS against vegetation and forest classes in mountainous land cover classifications and exhibit a cumulative effect on MCS diversity for this context.

AIM:To determine initial medication adherence in newly diagnosed glaucoma patients treated with anti-glaucoma ***:This retrospective and observational study included all patients diagnosed with glaucoma in the Primary Health Care units in Portugal during the years 2012 and 2013,which in consequence received a first prescription for anti-glaucoma *** was collected from electronic prescribing records of the primary care units and from pharmacy claims *** of glaucoma treatment and early discontinuation were measured,and the combination of(non)-initiation and early discontinuation accounted for initial medication(non)-***:A total of 3548 new glaucoma patients(40.1%male;59.9%female)were *** 1133(31.9%)patients were initially classified as non-users,since there was no pharmacy claim found for their first prescription for glaucoma ***,277(11.5%)patients early discontinued their treatment,acquiring only their first ***,the initial medication non-adherence rate was 39.7%since 1410 patients either didn’t initiate treatment or discontinued it ***:This study,reveals a major opportunity to improve glaucoma treatment and its control,since a large proportion of patients fail to engage with their prescribed therapy,which implies that implementation of individual or group strategies that enable patients with glaucoma to correctly perform their treatment is still needed.

Construction strategies for a NATM tunnel in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in residual soil

Due to the fast growth of urban areas worldwide,the demand for tunnels in developed areas is *** design and construc-tion of those tunnels are complex because of their shallow depths and their interaction with existing aboveground and buried structures,which results in rather limited allowable ground deformations induced by the tunnel excavation and *** tropical regions,residual porous soils near the surface are *** soils are highly deformable;thus,tunneling may induce large ground deformations that may damage nearby *** new Austrian tunneling method(NATM)and the sprayed concrete lining(SCL)technique are being widely employed in several big cities in tropical regions,but little research has been conducted to assess the induced ground deformations in residual soils,common in tropical *** paper provides insight into this issue.A well-documented metro tunnel in Sa˜o Paulo,Brazil,in a residual red porous clay,was analyzed using 3D finite element method(FEM).The behavior of the residual red porous clay was approximated by an advanced constitutive soil model calibrated with triaxial tests on intact samples extracted at the *** of the tunnel deformations during construction matched the field *** calibrated model was then used to explore the tunnel per-formance under different construction *** influence of partial face excavation,unsupported span length,support stiffness and pipe roof umbrella were *** numerical results showed that partial face excavation was effective to reduce ground deformations ahead of the face of the tunnel and to improve face stability;however,the settlements behind the face increased because of the delay in closing the primary *** installation of a stiffer liner closer to the face reduced the ground deformations *** pipe roof umbrella was the most effective technique to reduce the ground deformations around the tunnel;however,the numerical results
