Short-Term Outcomes of Two Surgical Techniques for the Treatment of Coarctation of the Aorta in Infants: Subclavian Flap Repair and Resection with Extended End-to-End Anastomosis Technique

Background: The aims of the study were to analyze the importance of two different surgical procedures, and to determine outcomes for neonates with coarctation of the aorta in two newly established centers. Methods: Outcomes of two different surgical repairs for coarctation of the aorta in 43 infants were evaluated retrospectively. The study was designed as a nonrandomized, cross-sectional study. The subclavian flap repair was applied to 22 patients (51%) and resection with extended end-to-end anastomosis technique to 21 patients (49%). After all operative survivors were followed up with a mean follow-up of 1.8 ± 0.8 years, data analyzed with t-test and the p value < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: The overall mortality rate was 4.6%. Forty mmHg gradients were determined in a patient from Resection Group postoperatively in the fifteenth month. After the balloon angioplasty, the gradient decreased to 25 mmHg. The presence of ventricular septal defect (p = 0.094) was the only significant predictor of adverse short-term outcome among the associated cardiac defects analyzed. The first-year survival rate was 100% in both groups in isolated coarctation (p = 0.965), however;such rate was found as 100% and 93.25% in Waldhausen Group and Resection Group, respectively in complex coarctation (p = 0.294). Conclusions: Both the subclavian flap repair and resection with extended end-to-end anastomosis for coarctation of the aorta in infants provide excellent short-term outcomes with lower recurrence rates requiring surgery or angioplasty.

The gravity coupling of the symmetric space sigma model is studied in the solvable Lie algebra parametrization. The corresponding Einstein equations are derived and the energy-momentum tensor is calculated. The results are used to derive the dynamical equations of the warped five-dimensional （5D） geometry for localized bulk scalar interactions in the framework of thick brane world models. The Einstein and scalar field equations are derived for flat brane geometry in the context of minimal and non-minimal gravity-bulk scalar couplings.

Further investigations on the influence of scale-up of a high shear granulator on the granule properties

This study focuses on the characterisation of strength, density, and size of granules produced in various scales of a high shear granulator. Calcium carbonate （Durca165） was used as the feed powder and aqueous polyethylene glycol （PEG 4000） as the binder. The dried granules were analysed for their strength, density, size distribution, and wall make-up. Granules were produced in granulators with four scales, 1, 5, 50, and 250 L under three scale-up rules of constant tip speed, constant shear stress, and constant Froude number. The results show that regardless of equipment scale, increasing the impeller speed has a great effect on crushing strength and stress. The underlying cause is an increase in granule density due to more consolidation at higher impeller speeds. Wall make-up is significantly reduced to less than 5% as the scale is increased from 1 to 250 L. The results of this study corroborate our previous findings that the constant tip speed rule is the best criterion for scale-up of high shear granulators.

Use of Subcutaneous Port Catheter in Childhood Malignancies

Background: The port catheters are used to give long-term total parenteral nutrition, intravenous fluids, blood and blood products, or to be preferred for oncology and hematological diseases. In this study, we sought to review our results concerning the subcutaneous port catheter appliance in childhood malignancies. Methods: Two hundred ten subcutaneous port catheters applied to 192 patients between November 2010 and October 2015 were examined retrospectively in a cross- sectional study. Information such as demographic data, primary diagnoses, port types and implantation durations were recorded. Localization of the intervention, surgical technique, early and late complications and causes of port removal were evaluated. Results: Mean age of patients was 6.4 ± 4.9 years (1 month - 17 years), 77 (40.1%) were female and 115 (59.9%) male. One hundred twenty nine ports were inserted from the right internal jugular vein, 59 to right subclavian vein, 14 to left subclavian vein and 8 to left internal jugular vein. Total duration of implantation was 55,492 days and median duration was 289 days. Early complications were: 1 (0.5%) hemothorax, 1 (0.5%) pneumothorax, 1 (0.5%) carotid artery injury, 1 (0.5%) arrhythmia and in 2 (1%) cases port mal-positioning. Late complications were: 9 (4.3%) infection and 8 (3.8%) mechanical problems, 7 (3.3%) thrombosis, and in 1 (0.5%) port fracture was detected. Port catheter was removed in 18 (8.6%) cases. No significant difference was found when jugular and subclavian vein implantation was compared in terms of all complications, especially infection and thrombosis. Conclusion: Use of port catheter is a safe option in children who are receiving a long-term chemotherapy. Education of the medical team will diminish the complication rate in port catheter insertions.

A convenient and facile one-pot synthesis of stable phosphorus ylides and 1,4-diionic organophosphorus compounds is reported by the reaction of triphenylphosphine, dialkylacetylenedicarboxylates and N-H, C-H or S-H acids in the presence of polyethyleneglycol （PEG）, β-cyclodextrin （β-CD）, glycerine （Gly） or ethyleneglycol （EG） in water. This methodology is of interest due to the use of water as a solvent, thus minimizing the cost operational hazards, and environmental pollution.

Carbon Dioxide Sequestration Methodothologies—A Review

The process of capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CCS) was previously considered a crucial and time-sensitive approach for diminishing CO2 emissions originating from coal, oil, and gas sectors. Its implementation was seen necessary to address the detrimental effects of CO2 on the atmosphere and the ecosystem. This recognition was achieved by previous substantial study efforts. The carbon capture and storage (CCS) cycle concludes with the final stage of CO2 storage. This stage involves primarily the adsorption of CO2 in the ocean and the injection of CO2 into subsurface reservoir formations. Additionally, the process of CO2 reactivity with minerals in the reservoir formations leads to the formation of limestone through injectivities. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is the final phase in the CCS cycle, mostly achieved by the use of marine and underground geological sequestration methods, along with mineral carbonation techniques. The introduction of supercritical CO2 into geological formations has the potential to alter the prevailing physical and chemical characteristics of the subsurface environment. This process can lead to modifications in the pore fluid pressure, temperature conditions, chemical reactivity, and stress distribution within the reservoir rock. The objective of this study is to enhance our existing understanding of CO2 injection and storage systems, with a specific focus on CO2 storage techniques and the associated issues faced during their implementation. Additionally, this research examines strategies for mitigating important uncertainties in carbon capture and storage (CCS) practises. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities can be considered as integrated systems. Criteria for Selecting Carbon Subsurface and Ocean Storage Site in Developing Countries: A Review

Important first phases in the process of implementing CO2 subsurface and ocean storage projects include selecting of best possible location(s) for CO2 storage, and site selection evaluation. Sites must fulfill a number of criteria that boil down to the following basics: they must be able to accept the desired volume of CO2 at the rate at which it is supplied from the CO2 source(s);they must as well be safe and reliable;and must comply with regulatory and other societal requirements. They also must have at least public acceptance and be based on sound financial analysis. Site geology;hydrogeological, pressure, and geothermal regimes;land features;location, climate, access, etc. can all be refined from these basic criteria. In addition to aiding in site selection, site characterization is essential for other purposes, such as foreseeing the fate and impacts of the injected CO2, and informing subsequent phases of site development, including design, permitting, operation, monitoring, and eventual abandonment. According to data from the IEA, in 2022, emissions from Africa and Asias emerging markets and developing economies, excluding Chinas, increased by 4.2%, which is equivalent to 206 million tonnes of CO2 and were higher than those from developed economies. Coal-fired power generation was responsible for more than half of the rise in emissions that were recorded in the region. The difficulty of achieving sustainable socio-economic progress in the developing countries is entwined with the work of reducing CO2 emissions, which is a demanding project for the economy. Organisations from developing countries, such as Bangladesh, Cameroon, India, and Nigeria, have formed partnerships with organisations in other countries for lessons learned and investment within the climate change arena. The basaltic rocks, coal seams, depleted oil and gas reservoirs, soils, deep saline aquifers, and sedimentary basins that developing countries (Bangladesh, Cameroon, India, and Nigeria etc.
