The Eastern Pontides orogenic belt in the Black Sea region of Turkey offers a critical window to plate kinematics and subduction polarity during the closure of the Paleotethys. Here we provide a brief synthesis on recent information from this belt. We infer a southward subduction for the origin of the Eastern Pontides orogenic belt and its associated late Mesozoic--Cenozoic magmatism based on clear spatial and temporal variations in Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic arc magmatism, together with the exis- tence of a prominent south-dipping reverse fault system along the entire southern coast of the Black Sea. Our model is at variance with some recent proposals favoring a northward subduction polarity, and illus- trates the importance of arc magmatism in evaluating the geodynamic milieu associated with convergent margin orocesses.

The eastern Pontides orogenic belt provides a window into continental arc magmatism in the Alpine-Himalayan belt. The late Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of this belt remains controversial. Here we focus on the nature of the transition from the adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism in the Kale area of Gumushane region in NE Turkey where this transition is best preserved. The adakitic lithologies comprise porphyries and hyaloclastites. The porphyries are represented by biotite-rich andesites, hornblende-rich andesite and dacite. The hayaloclastites represent the final stage of adakitic activity and they were generated by eruption/intrusion of adakitic andesitic magma into soft carbonate mud. The non-adakitic lithologies include basaltic-andesitic volcanic and associated pyroclastic rocks. Both rock groups are cutting by basaltic dikes representing the final stage of the Cenozoic magmatism in the study area. We report zircon U-Pb ages of 48.71 ± 0.74 Ma for the adakitic rocks, and 44.68 ± 0.84 Ma for the non-adakitic type, suggesting that there is no significant time gap during the transition from adakitic to non-adakitic magmatism. We evaluate the origin, magma processes and tectonic setting of the magmatism in the southern part of the eastern Pontides orogenic belt. Our results have important bearing on the late Mesozoic-Cenozoic geodynamic evolution of the eastern Mediter- ranean region.

This study deals with stress analysis of annular rotating discs made of functionally graded materials（FGMs）.Elasticity modulus and density of the discs are assumed to vary radially according to a power law function,but the material is of constant Poisson＇s ratio.A gradient parameter n is chosen between 0 and *** n = 0,the disc becomes a homogeneous isotropic *** and radial stress distributions and displacements on the disc are investigated for various gradient parameters n by means of the diverse elasticity modulus and density by using analytical and numerical ***,a homogenous tangential stress distribution and the lowest radial stresses along the radius of a rotating disc are approximately obtained for the gradient parameter n = 1.0 compared with the homogeneous,isotropic case n = *** means that a disc made of FGMs has the capability of higher angular rotations compared with the homogeneous isotropic disc.

AIM To investigate the levels of impulsiveness, and the relationship between the binge eating disorder(BED) and the levels of impulsiveness in obese *** Two hundred and forty-one obese patients who were included in the study and candidate for bariatric surgery(weight loss surgery) were clinically interviewed to identify the BED group, and patients were divided into two groups: Those with BED and those without BED. The comorbidity rate of groups was determined by using structured clinical interview for DSM-Ⅳ(SCID-Ⅰ). A sociodemographic data form including the story of previous psychiatric treatment, structured clinical interview for DSM-Ⅳ(SCID-Ⅰ), Beck Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-11 were applied to both of the *** In regard to 241 obese individuals included in the study, total score and score of attention subscale for BED(+) group were significantly high(P < 0.05). In addition, suicide attempt, story of psychiatric consultation, and score for BDI were again significantly high in the BED(+) group(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION In assessment of obese individuals, assessment of associated psychopathology such as impulsive characteristics and suicide attempt in addition to disrupted eating behaviors will allow to have a more extensive view.

Addiction to synthetic cannabinoids(SCs) is a growing social and health problem worldwide. Chronic use of SCs may cause adverse effects in the gastrointestinal system. We describe a very rare case of acute gastric dilatation(AGD) and hepatic portal venous gas(HPVG),with findings of acute abdomen resulting from chronic use of a SC, Bonzai. AGD and HPVG were detected by computerized tomography examination. Patchy mucosal ischemia was seen in endoscopic examination. Despite the findings of an acute abdomen, a non-surgical approach with nasogastric decompression, antibiotic therapy, and close radiologic and endoscopic followup was preferred in the presented case. Clinical and radiologic findings decreased dramatically on the first day, and endoscopic findings gradually disappeared over 7 d. In conclusion, this case shows that chronic use of a SC may cause AGD and accompanying HPVG,which can be managed non-surgically despite the findings of acute abdomen.

Post-translational protein modification, including phosphorylation, is generally quick and reversible, facilitating rapid biologic adjustments to altered cellular physiologic demands. In addition to protein phosphorylation, other post-translational modifications have been identified. Intracellular protein O-glycosylation, the addition of the simple sugar O-linked N-acetylglucosamine （O-G1cNAc） to serine/threonine residues, is a relatively recently identified post-translational modification that has added to the complexity by which protein function is regulated. Two intracellular enzymes, O-GlcNAc transferase and O-GlcNAcase, catalyze the addition and removal, respectively, of O-GlcNAc to serine and threonine side-chain hydroxyl groups. Numerous proteins, including enzymes, transcription factors, receptors and structural proteins have been shown to be modified by intracellular O-glycosylation. In this review, the mechanism and relevance of O-GlcNAc protein modification are discussed in the context of cell adhesion and several representative diseases.

Extended Use of Limestone Fines in Various Concretes

Limestone fines are increasingly used in cement and concrete for improved material properties and sustainability. This paper presents recent research at Iowa State University on utilization of limestone fines in concrete. It includes the beneficial uses of limestone fines in：（1） limestone blended Portland cement; （2） SFSCC （semi-flowable self-consolidating concrete）; and （3） HPC （high performance concrete）. The research results show that using 5%-10% of limestone fines to replace for Type IP cement （with 25% fly ash） increased mortar strength. Well-designed SFSCC with 25% limestone fines （by mass of cementitious materials） displayed desirable rheological and mechanical properties required for slip-forming construction. The newly developed limestone fines-based HPC reached the one-day compressive strength of over 28 MPa.

Adsorption of lead and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions using manganoxide minerals

Removal of lead and cadmium ions from aqueous solutions by adsorption process was investigated. Low cost and locally available natural mineral of manganoxide mineral was used as an adsorbent. The kinetics of adsorption process data was examined using the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order kinetics and the intra-particle diffusion models. The rate constants of adsorption for all these kinetics models were calculated and compared. The adsorption kinetics was best described by the pseudo second-order model. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models were applied to the experimental equilibrium data at different temperatures. The experimental data well fitted to Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of manganoxide mineral for lead and cadmium ions were calculated from the Langmuir isotherm and were 98 and 6.8 mg/g, respectively. Thermodynamic parameters such as the change of Gibbs free energy, enthalpy and entropy of adsorption were also calculated and it was found that the lead and cadmium uptake reactions by manganoxide mineral were endothermic and spontaneous in nature. Therefore, manganoxide mineral can be used as adsorbents for lead and cadmium ions removal processes as an alternative natural mineral among the others.
