Volume warrants for major and minor roads left-turning traffic lanes at unsignalized T-intersections： A case study using VISSIM modelling

The most common type of intersection improvement considered in Ghana is signalization. However, other actions such as the installation of left-turn lanes have been proven to improve the efficiency and safety of an intersection without the need for signalization in the short term. Warrants which guide the installation of such lanes in Ghana are adopted from elsewhere and as a result do not reflect local traffic flow conditions. This study established volume warrants based on a delay threshold to guide the installation of left- turn lanes at unsignalized T-intersections using VISSIM micro simulation tool. The VISSIM model was calibrated using traffic flow, delay, average and maximum queue length data obtained from a two-hour video recording of the case study intersection during the morning peak period. After calibration, several scenarios covering a wide range of opera- tional conditions were simulated. Using level of service （LOS） C cut off point of 25 s/veh as the maximum acceptable delay to minor road left-turning traffic, an equation y = -0.57x ＋1091 has been developed which predicts the minor road left-turn volume threshold （y） above which a minor road left-turn lane may be considered and below which a minor road left-turn lane may not be necessary for a range of major road volumes （x）. The critical delay to major road left-turning traffic was found to be 16 s/veh. Major road left-turn lane volume warrants were also determined based on this threshold delay value. The approach used in this study can serve as a guide that can be used by metropolitan and municipal road en- gineers to assess the need for left-turn lanes.

Influence of(FeO+Ti O_2) abundance on the microwave thermal emissions of lunar regolith

One of the essential controls on the microwave thermal emissions(MTE) of the lunar regolith is the abundance of Fe O and TiO_2, known as the(Fe O+Ti O_2) abundance(FTA). In this paper, a radiative transfer simulation is employed first to study the change in the brightness temperature(T_B) with FTA under a range of frequencies and surface temperatures. Then, we analyze the influence of FTA on the MTE of the lunar regolith using microwave sounder(CELMS) data from the Chang'E-2 lunar orbiter, Clementine UV-VIS data, and lunar samples recovered from the Apollo and Surveyor projects. We conclude that:(1) FTA strongly influences the MTE of the lunar regolith, but it is not the decisive control, and(2) FTA decreases slightly with depth. This research plays an essential role in appropriately inverting CELMS data to obtain lunar regolith parameters.

In an attempt to reconcile wood extraction and forest biodiversity in managed boreal forests,ecosystem-based forest management(EBM)has become the de facto management *** forestry represents one prominent way that EBM is implemented in many parts of the *** patches commonly left after harvesting serve as analogues of fire island remnants,which are patches of unburned forests in the burned forest *** the persistence of retention patches has been questioned,few studies have attempted to quantitatively compare forest attributes in both burned and harvested *** part of a larger program examining multiple aspects of ecosystem function in fire and harvest island remnants,we investigated the impact of disturbance type(fire/harvest)and forest edges on C stock in snags and coarse woody debris(CWD)found in island remnants in mixedwood boreal forests of Alberta,*** C stock(in snags and CWD)was similar between the two disturbance types and edge plots had similar total deadwood C stocks to *** edges of island remnants had about two-fold more snag C stock than their interiors in both disturbance types,but C stock in CWD was unaffected by edge effects and disturbance *** results suggest that deadwood C dynamics in island remnants in fire and harvest disturbed boreal forests were similar,thus lending support for the continued implementation of retention forestry in Alberta.

Purgatory： A Study of the Historical Development and Its Compatibility with the Biblical Teaching on the Afterlife

When it comes to the afterlife, Seventh-day Adventists advocate ＂soul sleep＂ condition, in which the dead person is in some sort of suspended state until the final judgment. On the other hand, many Evangelical Christians believe that the dead go directly to Heaven to be with the Lord. But in Roman Catholicism, purgatory is considered as the place where most dead believers expiate their remaining sins before entering the visible presence of God. This doctrine has been criticized extensively both by Catholics and Evangelicals in spite of its massive defence by the Holy office. Several alternative views about the resurrection of the dead have been propounded by some twentieth-century Protestants and some notable Catholic theologians. Although the doctrine of purgatory has been approved and reaffirmed by several Church councils, the questions that still remain are： Is the doctrine of purgatory biblically justifiable？ Does the work of salvation extend beyond the grave？ This study attempts to find answers to these questions. The study therefore surveys the doctrine of purgatory in the light of the biblical teachings about death. The second section surveys the background to the doctrine with reference to Judaism, the Apocrypha, the New Testament, the Church Fathers, and Church Councils. The third section looks at the nature of purgatory, the duration and the nature of the punishment meted out to those who go to purgatory and how souls are released from purgatory. The fourth section also examines the biblical teaching on death. The study concludes that the doctrine of purgatory is based on tradition rather than the Bible. The Bible emphasizes the finality of one＇s destiny in this life rather than after this life.

Vaccine pricing and production capacity in Africa: can Africa move beyond pooled procurement in the face of a future pandemic?

We examine Africa's vaccine manufacturing potential, spurred by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, while critically analyzing vaccine price inequities and procurement strategies during the pandemic, with anticipation of future outbreaks. Although Africa consumes approximately 25% of the global vaccine supply, over 99% of these vaccines are produced outside the continent, primarily due to insufficient local investment. Vaccine procurement strategies have relied heavily on pooled procurement mechanisms and tiered-pricing models, predominantly controlled by external organizations. Significant disparities in vaccine pricing have resulted in vaccine price inequities, with evidence suggesting price discrimination, where different prices are charged for the same vaccine across countries and regions. While vaccine prices are only one component of vaccination campaign costs, the inequitable pricing of vaccines poses serious challenges to fair access, especially in low-income countries. Given the inevitability of future pandemics and other outbreaks, the central question remains: Does Africa possess the capacity to strengthen its vaccine production infrastructure and reduce dependency on external suppliers? Our review reveals that, with robust political commitment, enhanced investment in Research and Development (R&D), and leveraging the heterogeneous nature of the regional bloc, Africa has made strides toward establishing vaccine manufacturing hubs with the potential for substantial capacity expansion. Furthermore, we argue for a regional campaign based on the principles of the fair priority model as an ethical framework for vaccine procurement, which prioritizes need and ensures equitable distribution, thereby complementing existing pooled procurement arrangements in times of future pandemics. ＂Rule and Subdue＂ in the Context of Gen 1：26-28

The society has become aware of the rate at which our environment is being destroyed. Different schools thought to aim at savaging the environmental problems which have emerged. While some blame this environmental mess on Social Darwinism, others blame it on Biblical Creationists. On the other side of the ecological debate is the New Age Movement （pantheism）, which to some extent are evolutionist and opposed to the Creator God, though they worship and serve nature （Rom 1：25）. The New-Agers believe that it was as a result of the ＂dominion mandate＂ God gave to humanity that has led to human destruction of the ecology. Some Christians have been indifferent towards nature; because they oppose the New-Agers, they do not want to have anything to do with their views about controlling the environmental problem. Christians are being called upon either to compromise with Darwinian evolution or pantheism （New-Age）. The main concern of this study is to find the meanings of kabash and radah as used in Gen 1：26-28. It also aims at ascertaining the kind of dominion God gave to humanity. Did God grant to man a totalitarian despotic dominion over nature？ Or was the dominion given to man in the form of stewardship？ These are the concerns of this paper.

Analysing the impact of migration on HIV/AIDS cases using epidemiological modelling to guide policy makers

In this paper,we present the impact of migration on the spread of HIV and AIDS cases.A simple model for HIV and AIDS that incorporates migration and addresses its contributions to the spread of HIV and AIDS cases was *** model was calibrated to HIV and AIDS incidence data from *** explore the use of Markov chain Monte Carlo(MCMC)simulation method to estimate uncertainty in all the unknown parameters incorporated in our proposed *** the migrant population,1.5572e-01 were susceptible to HIV transmission,which constituted 67,801 migrants.A proportion of migrants,6.3773e-04,were estimated to be HIV infected,constituting 278 *** were 72(per 10,000)migrants estimated to have had AIDS,representing a proportion of *** result suggests that the disease-free steady state was unstable since the estimated basic reproduction number R0 was 2.0906 and 2.3322 for the models without and with migration,*** is not a good indicator from the public health point of view,as the aim is to stabilize the epidemic at the disease-free *** advantage of introduction of migration to the simple model validated the true R0 and the transmission rate b associated with HIV and AIDS epidemic disease in *** also indicates an approximately 12 percentage points increase in the rate of HIV infection with migration.

Alternative Binders for Increased Sustainable Construction in Ghana—A Guide for Building Professionals

Sustainable concepts and practices have taken a centre-stage in different fields of studies and professions. This is because human activities continue to threaten the carrying capacity of earth resources as well as life basic needs such as shelter. Ghana, a developing nation, has been characterized with a boom in construction activities. In almost every constructional work, Portland cement remains the main binding agent that is used to bind aggregates together in a monolithic unit. The overdependence of the Ghanaian construction industry on Portland cement has contributed to huge sums of foreign exchange used to import cement ingredients, high cost of buildings and annual artificial shortages of cement which leads to high cost of the product. In this work, alternative binding agent—pozzolana cement, is reported with regards to the theory behind its utilization, laboratory results and practical applications. Results obtained from both the laboratory and the field works have shown that the future binder for the Ghanaian construction industry is pozzolana cement. CSIR-Building and Road Research Institute recommends it for the construction industry for use in various forms of construction such as block making, concrete and mortar works.
