Melatonin is a pleiotropic molecule that,after a short-term sleep deprivation,promotes the proliferation of neural stem cells in the adult ***,this effect has not been observed in long-term sleep *** precise mechanism exerted by melatonin on the modulation of neural stem cells is not entirely elucidated,but evidence indicates that epigenetic regulators may be involved in this *** this study,we investigated the effect of melatonin treatment during a 96-hour sleep deprivation and analyzed the expression of epigenetic modulators predicted by computational text mining and keyword *** results showed that the administration of melatonin under sleep-deprived conditions increased the MECp2 expression and reduced the SIRT1 expression in the dentate *** observed that let-7 b,mir-132,and mir-124 were highly expressed in the dentate gyrus after melatonin administration,but they were not modified by sleep *** addition,we found more Sox2^+/5-bromo-2’-deoxyuridine(BrdU)^+cells in the subgranular zone of the sleep-deprived group treated with melatonin than in the untreated *** findings may support the notion that melatonin modifies the expression of epigenetic mediators that,in turn,regulate the proliferation of neural progenitor cells in the adult dentate gyrus under long-term sleep-deprived *** procedures performed in this study were approved by the Animal Ethics Committee of the University of Guadalajara,Mexico(approval ***-16610)on January 2,2016.

Health care data analysis and visualization using interactive data exploration for sportsperson

Sports have scored significant attention among the public in this multifaceted world. Diverse training strategies are followed by many athletics and even flexible to adapt comfortable and optimal techniques. This fact has led physicians and educators to encourage remote health surveillance as one of the core strategies in athletic training. The need for innovative data exploration methodologies capable of facing Big Data’s influence to make remote monitoring services viable has been raised by the growing ties of networks that deliver high quantities of real-time data. This paper presents an interactive healthcare data exploration and visualization(IHDEV) model to enhance multi-scaling data analysis and visualization in the athletic health vision platform. This paper aims to simplify optimization methods to measure sportsperson muscle tension. This model illustrates a three-layer architecture with a raw data acquisition layer, data analysis layer, and visualization layer. The first layer considers the acquisition of health-related data from the athletes for remote monitoring using IoT and stores it into the cloud. The data analysis layer adapts artificial intelligence(AI) in data mining. The final layer introduces an intelligent interactive data visualization model assisted by a reactive workflow mechanism, enabling analysis and visualization solutions to be composed in a personalized data flow appropriate to the athletic training. This experimental study extended with two healthcare datasets to show the feasibility of IHDEV in promoting healthcare based athletic monitoring and improves the accuracy ratio of 96.7%, prediction ratio of 96.2%, an efficiency ratio of 96.8%, pearson correlation coefficient of 98.2%, and reduces the error rate of 18.7% compared to other conventional models.

Developing a dynamic growth model for teak plantations in India

Background： Tectono grandis （teak） is one of the most important tropical timber species occurring naturally in India. Appropriate growth models, based on advanced modeling techniques, are not available but are necessary for the successful management of teak stands in the country. Long-term forest planning requires mathematical models and the principles of Dynamical System Theory provide a solid foundation for these. Methods： The state-space approach makes it possible to accommodate disturbances and avarying environment. In this paper, an attempt has been made to develop a dynamic growth model based on the limited data, consisting of three annual measurements, collected from 22 teak sample plots in Karnataka, Southern India. Results： A biologically consistent whole-stand growth model has been presented which uses the state-space approach for modelling rates of change of three state-variables viz., dominant height, stems per hectare and stand basal area. Moreover, the model includes a stand volume equation as an output function to estimate this variable at any point in time. Transition functions were fitted separately and simultaneously. Moreover, a continuous autoregressive error structure is also included in the modelling process. For fitting volume equation, generalized method of moments was used to get efficient parameter estimates under heteroscedastic conditions. Conclusions： A simple model containing few free parameters performed well and is particularly well suited to situations where available data is scarce.

Synthesis of activated carbons from black sapote seeds,characterization and application in the elimination of heavy metals and textile dyes

Many different techniques may be used to remove industrial pollutants from wastewater. Adsorption using activated carbon has been reported to be an effective method. This work proposes the use of a vegetable residue(black sapote seeds) as a raw material for its synthesis. These carbons were chemically activated using phosphoric acid and carbonized at 673 and 873 K. Adsorption isotherms were constructed for the textile dyes on the carbons, and this data was treated using Langmuir’s equation to quantitatively describe the adsorption process. The synthesized carbons were characterized using FTIR, EA, SEM, Nitrogen adsorption(specific surface areas of 879 and 652 m2·g-1), and their points of zero charge(2.1 and 2.3). It was possible to adsorb both heavy metals and textile dyes present in aqueous solutions and wastewaters using these activated carbons. Heavy metals were adsorbed almost completely by both carbons. Cationic dyes where adsorbed(58–59.8 mg·g-1) in greater amounts compared to anionic dyes(10–58.8 mg·g-1). The amount of anionic dyes adsorbed increased almost 30% by changing the pH of the solutions. One of the carbons was thermally regenerated on three occasions without losing its adsorption capacity and it was proved in a flow system.

Are assemblages of the fireworm Hermodice carunculata enhanced in sediments beneath offshore fish cages?

Abundances of the fireworm Hermodice carunculata were counted through a monitoring assessment study of fish cages in Barranco Hondo（NE Tenerife）. Seven campaigns were conducted from November 2007 to June 2010 and temporal variations were found, as well as differences among sampling stations. The polychaete H. carunculata obtained its highest abundance in sediments beneath fish cages throughout the study period. Thus, the assemblages of this omnivorous species were favoured by the presence of fish cages.

As climate change negotiations progress,monitoring biomass and carbon stocks is becoming an important part of the current forest ***,national governments are interested in developing forest-monitoring strategies using geospatial *** statistical methods for mapping biomass,there is a nonparametric approach called k-nearest neighbor(kNN).We compared four variations of distance metrics of the kNN for the spatially-explicit estimation of aboveground biomass in a portion of the Mexican north border of the intertropical *** derived,climatic,and topographic predictor variables were combined with the Mexican National Forest Inventory(NFI)data to accomplish the *** of distance metrics applied into the kNN algorithm was evaluated using a cross validation leave-one-out *** results indicate that the Most Similar Neighbor(MSN)approach maximizes the correlation between predictor and response variables(r=0.9).Our results are in agreement with those reported in the *** findings confirm the predictive potential of the MSN approach for mapping forest variables at pixel level under the policy of Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation(REDD+).

Gastroenteritis in an adult female revealing hemolytic uremic syndrome: case report

Nowadays acute gastroenteritis infection caused by Escherichia coli(E. coli) O157:H7 is frequently associated with hemolytic uremic syndrome(HUS), which usually developed after prodromal diarrhea that is often bloody. The abdominal pain accompanied by failure kidney is a suspicious symptom to develop this disorder. Their pathological characteristic is vascular damage which manifested as arteriolar and capillary thrombosis with abnormalities in the endothelium and vessel walls. The major etiological agent of HUS is enterohemorragic(E coli) strain belonging to serotype O157:H7. The lack of papers about HUS associated to gastroenteritis lead us to report this case for explain the symptoms that are uncommon. Furthermore, this report provides some strategies to suspect and make an early diagnosis, besides treatment approach to improving outcomes and prognosis for patients with this disorder.

The increase in the population of neurodegenerative diseases has made it necessary to search for new drugs and phytopharmaceuticals for the prevention or treatment of these diseases,which is why the exploration of the potential of the plants present in the coffee zone is of great *** objective of this study was to determine the possible neuroprotective effect of the species Nectandra *** methanolic extract of Nectandra acutifolia was obtained through maceration of the aerial part of the *** phytochemical profile was detected by means of thin layer *** evaluation of the antioxidant capacity was carried out by means of the colorimetric techniques of DppH and ABTS ^+.On the other hand,the total content of phenols and flavonoids was determined as well as the neuroprotective activity,by means of the negative geotaxis test and biochemical ***,the methanolic extract of *** showed a high antioxidant capacity through the two colorimetric *** negative geotaxis test revealed that the concentration of 0.1%had a greater locomotor effect in ***,which was used as a supplement in the feeding of the *** results showed that the methanolic extract of this species has neuroprotective activity using this in vivo model.

Simulating FAS-induced apoptosis by using p systems

In contrast to differential equations, p systems are an unconventional model of computation which takes into consideration the discrete character of the quantity of components and the inherent randomness that exists in biological phenomena. The key feature of p systems is their compartmentalised structure which represents the heterogeneity of the structural organisation of the cells, and where one can take into account the role played by membranes in the functioning of the system, for example signalling at the cell surface, selective uptake of substances from the media, diffusion across different compartments, etc. We show here that p systems can be a reliable tool for Systems Biology and could even outperform in some cases the current simulation techniques based on differential equations. We will also use a strategy based on the well known Gillespie algorithm but running on more than one compartment called Multi-compartmental Gillespie Algorithm.
