Validation of a preclinical dry eye model in New Zealand white rabbits during and following topical instillation of 1% ophthalmic atropine sulfate

Background : The objective of this study was to validate an animal model for dry eye during and after the administration of 1% ophthalmic atropine sulfate(oAS) in New Zealand white(NZW) rabbits.Methods : oAS(1%) was applied three times per day to 30 eyes of 15 healthy NZW rabbits. Sacrifice, enucleation, and lacrimal gland removal took place on days 15, 21,and 30(oAS group). A second group(n = 5) was used as control. Clinical evaluations took place on days 3, 10, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 30. The primary endpoints were:Schirmer I test, tear break-up time(TBUT), and corneal fluorescein staining. As secondary endpoints, clinical changes including intraocular pressure, and histopathology were evaluated.Results : While oAS was administered, the Schirmer I test showed a statistically significant reduction for oAS group versus control( p oduction( p owed statistically significant differences between groups(days 3 and 10;p = 0.001) and versus basal values(day 3;p orescein staining showed a statistically significant difference(day 3;p = 0.001). The most frequent clinical finding was conjunctival hyperemia(76.9% oAS vs. 20% control). For histopathology, all oAS subjects presented some degree of inflammation(86.7% minimal;13.3% mild) whereas the control presented only 30% minimal inflammation. Goblet cell density showed no difference.Conclusions : The effectiveness of the oAS dry eye model in NZW rabbits as reported in previous studies was confirmed, provided that the application of the drug is maintained throughout the intervention;it is not a viable model after oAS administration is suspended.

●AIM:To evaluate the efficacy of pneumatic retinopexy(PR)in patients undergoing PR as primary treatment for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)and analyze the factors associated with success and failure in the studied population.●METHoDS:A retrospective chart review was done of patients with RRD treated with PR as primary management method treated at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai between January 2017 and December 2021.Primary outcome measured success or failure of PR.Secondary outcome measured best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)after PR.A separate risk analysis was done to identify and stratify risks associated with success and failure of PR.●RESULTS:A total of 179 eyes from 179 patients were included for final analysis.The 83 patients(46.37%)achieved anatomical reattachment of the retina after primary PR with no need for additional surgery.The 96 patients(53.63%)had a failed primary PR and required a PPV and 6 of them required pars plana vitrectomy(PPV)with scleral buckle(SB).In total,19 cases(10.61%)were done as temporizing pneumatics,18(94.74%)underwent PPV,and 1(5.26%)did not require further intervention.The visual acuities at postoperative month 1(PoM1)for patients who underwent primary PR successfully and for those that underwent PPV after,were 0.58(20/80)and 1.03(20/200)respectively.Patients who met Pneumatic Retinopexy Versus Vitrectomy for the Management of Primary Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment outcomes Randomized Trial(PIVoT)criteria had a statistically significant decreased risk of primary PR failing(hazard ratio 0.29,P=0.00).Majority of missed or new breaks were found superotemporally.●CoNCLUSIoN:PR is a good treatment option for treating RRDs in patients that meet PIVoT criteria and can be conducted as a temporizing measure.PIVoT criteria and fovea on status decrease the risk of PR failure.

In this paper, a sliding mode control with adaptive gain combined with a high-order sliding mode observer to solve the tracking problem for a quadrotor UAV is addressed, in presence of bounded external disturbances and parametric uncertainties. The high order sliding mode observer is designed for estimating the linear and angular speed in order to implement the proposed scheme. Furthermore, a Lyapunov function is introduced to design the controller with the adaptation law, whereas an analysis of finite time convergence towards to zero is provided, where sufficient conditions are obtained. Regarding previous works from literature, one important advantage of proposed strategy is that the gains of control are parameterized in terms of only one adaptive parameter, which reduces the control effort by avoiding gain overestimation. Numerical simulations for tracking control of the quadrotor are given to show the performance of proposed adaptive control–observer scheme.

Improving colorectal cancer screening programs

In this editorial we comment on the article by Agatsuma et al published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology.They suggest policies for more effective colorectal screening.Screening is the main policy that has led to lower mortality rates in later years among the population that was eligible for screening.Colonoscopy is the gold standard tool for screening and has preventive effects by removing precancerous or early malignant polyps.However,colonoscopy is an invasive process,and fecal tests such as the current hemoglobin immunodetection were developed,followed by endoscopy,as the general tool for population screening,avoiding logistical and economic problems.Even so,participation and adherence rates are low.Different screening options are being developed with the idea that if people could choose between the ones that best suit them,participation in population-based screening programs would increase.Blood tests,such as a recent one that detects cell-free DNA shed by tumors called circulating tumor DNA,showed a similar accuracy rate to stool tests for cancer,but were less sensitive for advanced precancerous lesions.At the time when the crosstalk between the immune system and cancer was being established as a new hallmark of cancer,novel immune system-related biomarkers and information on patients’immune parameters,such as cell counts of different immune populations,were studied for the early detection of colorectal cancer,since they could be effective in asymptomatic people,appearing earlier in the adenoma-carcinoma development compared to the presence of fecal blood.sCD26,for example,detected 80.37%of advanced adenomas.To reach as many eligible people as possible,starting at an earlier age than current programs,the direction could be to apply tests based on blood,urine or salivary fluid to samples taken during routine visits to the primary health system.

Purpose:To examine the effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in children aged 7-8 years.Methods:Twenty schools in 5 different European countries(2 second-grade classrooms per school)participated in a cluster randomized controlled trial(Sport at School trial).Participants were assigned to either a control group,which continued with their habitual physical education lessons,or to an intervention group,which replaced these lessons with a 1-year karate intervention(Karate Mind and Movement program).A total of 721 children(344 girls and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 years old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 were assigned to the control group and intervention group,respectively.outcomes included academic performance(average grade),psychosocial functioning(Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for parents),and different markers of physical fitness(cardiorespiratory fitness,balance,and flexibility).Results:The intervention provided small but significant benefits compared to the control group for academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct problems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),cardiorespiratory fitness(d=0.36;powards significant benefits for flexibility(d=0.24;p=0.056).No significant benefits were observed for other variables,including psychosocial difficulties,emotional symptoms,hyperactivity/inattention,peer problems,or prosocial behaviour(all p>0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year school-based karate intervention was effective in improving academic achievement,conduct problems,and physical fitness in primary school children.The results support the inclusion of karate during physical education lessons.

In this paper, we offer a review of type-3 fuzzy logic systems and their applications in control. The main objective of this work is to observe and analyze in detail the applications in the control area using type-3 fuzzy logic systems. In this case, we review their most important applications in control and other related topics with type-3 fuzzy systems. Intelligent algorithms have been receiving increasing attention in control and for this reason a review in this area is important. This paper reviews the main applications that make use of Intelligent Computing methods. Specifically, type-3 fuzzy logic systems. The aim of this research is to be able to appreciate, in detail, the applications in control systems and to point out the scientific trends in the use of Intelligent Computing techniques. This is done with the construction and visualization of bibliometric networks, developed with Vos Viewer Software, which it is a free Java-based program,mainly intended to be used for analyzing and visualizing bibliometric networks. With this tool, we can create maps of publications, authors, or journals based on a co-citation network or construct maps of keywords, countries based on a co-occurrence networks, research groups, etc.

Clinicopathological alterations in wild mammals from the reservoir system of Trypanosoma cruzi:a scoping review

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of Chagas disease.This flagellated protozoan is transmitted to humans as well as different species of domestic and wild animals via vectors from the Reduviidae family(known as"kissing bugs").Despite the fact that hundreds of species of wild mammals are part of the reservoir system,the morphologi-cal changes and clinical manifestations resulting from the pathogenesis of the infection have been largely neglected.The aim of this review is to systematically compile the available information regarding clinicopathological altera-tions in wild mammals due to natural infection by T.cruzi.Information was obtained from six online bibliographic data search platforms,resulting in the identification of 29 publications that met the inclusion criteria.Mortality was the most common clinical manifestation,cardiac damage was the main finding at necropsy,and lymphoplas-macytic inflammation was the most frequent microscopic injury.Thus,regardless of its role as a reservoir,T.cruzi has the potential to affect the health status of wild mammals,a situation that highlights the need for further research to analyze,measure,and compare its effects at both the individual and population levels.

The BETA application-specific integrated circuit(ASIC)is a fully programmable chip designed to amplify,shape and digitize the signal of up to 64 Silicon photomultiplier(SiPM)channels,with a power consumption of approximately~1 mW/channel.owing to its dual-path gain,the BETA chip is capable of resolving single photoelectrons(phes)with a signal-to-noise ratio(SNR)>5 while simultaneously achieving a dynamic range of~4000 phes.Thus,BETA can provide a cost-effective solution for the readout of SiPMs in space missions and other applications with a maximum rate below 10 kHz.In this study,we describe the key characteristics of the BETA ASIC and present an evaluation of the performance of its 16-channel version,which is implemented using 130 nm technology.The ASIC also contains two discriminators that can provide trigger signals with a time jitter down to 400 ps FWHM for 10 phes.The linearity error of the charge gain measurement was less than 2%for a dynamic range as large as 15 bits.

A Hybrid Approach for Predicting Probability of Default in Peer-to-Peer (P2P) Lending Platforms Using Mixture-of-Experts Neural Network

Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending offers an alternative way to access credit. Unlike established lending institutions with proven credit risk management practices, P2P platforms rely on numerous independent variables to evaluate loan applicants’ creditworthiness. This study aims to estimate default probabilities using a mixture-of-experts neural network in P2P lending. The approach involves coupling unsupervised clustering to capture essential data properties with a classification algorithm based on the mixture-of-experts structure. This classic design enhances model capacity without significant computational overhead. The model was tested using P2P data from Lending Club, comparing it to other methods like Logistic Regression, AdaBoost, Gradient Boosting, Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest. The hybrid model demonstrated superior performance, with a Mean Squared Error reduction of at least 25%.

Gas Exchange Rates of Texas Persimmon (Diospyros texana) in Central Texas Woodlands

Diospyros texana (Texas persimmon) is a secondary species in most Juniperus ashei/Quercus fusiformis woodlands in central Texas. It has high density, but plants are mostly in the community understory. Light response curves at ambient and elevated levels of Co2 and temperature were measured for D. texana. The Anet (photosynthetic rate) increased significantly as both light level and Co2 levels increased but not temperature. The Amax (maximum photosynthetic rate) of D. texana in full sun at elevated levels of Co2 was increased for all treatments. Stomatal conductance increased with levels of Co2 but only if the interaction was removed from the model. Intercellular levels of Co2 increased with both temperature and Co2 treatments as did water use efficiency (WUE). Furthermore, light saturation (Lsat) increased with Co2 treatments and light compensation (Lcp) increased with temperature. The dark respiration (Rd) increased with both temperature and Co2 treatments. Markov population models suggested D. texana populations would remain ecologically similar in the future. However, sub-canopy light levels and herbivory should be considered when examining population projections. For example, Juniperus ashei juveniles are not recruited into any canopy unless there are high light levels. Herbivory reduces the success of Quercus juveniles from reaching the canopy. These factors do not seem to be a problem for D. texana juveniles which would allow them to reach the canopy without need of a high light gap and are not prevented by herbivory. Thus, Juniperus/Quercus woodlands will change in the future to woodlands with D. texana a more common species.
