Noisy environments:untangling the role of anthropogenic noise on bird species richness in a Neotropical city

Background:Among urban stimuli,anthropogenic noise has been identified to be one of the behavioral drivers of species that rely on acoustic signals for *** have shown both species‑specific and assemblage responses to urban noise,ranging from the modulation of their acoustic frequencies and spatiotemporal adjustments to declines in species *** this study,we assessed the citywide relationship between two anthropogenic noise variables(noise levels recorded during bird surveys and daily average noise levels)and vegetation cover with bird species ***:This study was conducted in the city of Xalapa(Mexico)through a 114 citywide point‑count *** recorded bird communities at each sampling *** measured noise levels using a sound level meter while performing point‑***,we generated a map of average daily noise of the city using an array of 61 autonomous recording units distributed across the city of Xalapa and calculated daily noise levels for the 114 *** ran a linear model(LM)to assess potential relationships between both point‑count and daily(24 h)noise values and vegetation cover with bird ***:Results from the LM show:(1)a negative relationship between maximum point‑count noise and avian species richness,(2)no relationship between 24 h noise and bird species richness,and(3)a positive relationship between vegetation cover and bird species ***:Results provide evidence that decreases in urban bird species richness do not necessarily imply the permanent absence of species,suggesting that birds can temporarily fly away from or avoid sites when noisy,become cryptic while noisy events are occurring,or be undetected due to our inability to record them in the field during noisy events.

Poor stability and dispersibility,as well as aggregation are considered as major challenges in clinical application of iron oxide nanoparticles(IONPs).Several studies have shown that the synthesis parameters and post-synthesis treatments e.g.,drying methods,have the capability to improve the particles'***,we investigate the combined effect of synthesis and post-treatment parameters on the particle size,stability and magnetism of ***(Fe_(3)O_(4))NPs were prepared via co-precipitation and post-treated using different methods,i.e.(i)freeze dried at-53℃,0.133 mbar for 48 h(liquid nitrogen frozen(LFD)and freezer frozen(FFD)),(ii)vacuum oven dried(VOD)at 60℃for 24 h,and(iii)kept wet colloidal(WET),dispersed in deionized *** Fe_(3)O_(4)NPs’chemical functional groups,size,shape,crystallinity,stability,aggregation,porosity,and magnetic properties were further analysed using different characterisation *** results showed that,while the WET sample had the best stability and significantly less aggregation at different temperatures,amongst post-treated Fe_(3)O_(4)NPs,LFD sample exhibited the best stability(up to 37℃),dispersion and smallest polydispersity ***,all dried NPs had superparamagnetic characteristics,while,LFD Fe_(3)O_(4)NPs had better magnetic properties and stability than other drying methods.

Recently, rare-earth perovskite-type oxides with the general formula ABO(A rare earth element, B transition metal, O oxygen) are regarded as promising materials for Ni/oxide batteries due to their hydrogen storage ability. In the present study, the hydrogen storage properties of the rare-earth perovskite-type oxide LaSrCoFeOwere evaluated in alkaline solution and at various temperatures. The hydrogen storage properties were investigated electrochemically by applying galvanostatic charge/discharge currents. Electrochemical pressurecomposition-temperature isotherms were constructed using the Nernst equation. The exchange current density and proton hydrogen diffusion coefficient were calculated using linear polarization measurements and the potential-step method, respectively. Interestingly, the maximum hydrogen absorption capacity, re-calculated from the electrochemical capacity, is 1.72 wt% at 333 K and 6 mol·LKOh. In addition, the hysteresis value, calculated from pressure-composition-temperature isotherms, was429 J·molat 333 K,while the self-discharge rate was about 25% after 24-h storage at open circuit and at 333 K.

Application of a biochemical and clinical model to predict individual survival in patients with end-stage liver disease

AIM:To investigate the capability of a biochemical and clinical model,BioCliM,in predicting the survival of cirrhotic ***:We prospectively evaluated the survival of 172 cirrhotic *** model was constructed using clinical(ascites,encephalopathy and variceal bleeding) and biochemical(serum creatinine and serum total bilirubin) variables that were selected from a Cox proportional hazards *** was applied to estimate 12-,52-and 104-wk *** model's calibration using the hosmer-Lemeshow statistic was computed at 104 wk in a validation ***,the model's validity was tested among an independent set of 85 patients who were stratified into 2 risk groups(low risk≤8 and high risk>8).RESULTS:In the validation cohort,all measures of fi t,discrimination and calibration were improved when the biochemical and clinical model was *** proposed model had better predictive values(c-statistic:0.90,0.91,0.91) than the Model for End-stage Liver Disease(MELD) and Child-Pugh(CP) scores for 12-,52-and 104-wk mortality,*** addition,the hosmer-Lemeshow(h-L) statistic revealed that the biochemical and clinical model(h-L,4.69) is better calibrated than MELD(h-L,17.06) and CP(h-L,14.23).There were no significant differences between the observed and expected survival curves in the stratified risk groups(low risk,P=0.61;high risk,P=0.77).CONCLUSION:Our data suggest that the proposed model is able to accurately predict survival in cirrhotic patients.

Six-day measurement of size-resolved indoor fluorescent bioaerosols of outdoor origin in an office

Indoor airborne bioaerosols of outdoor origin play an important role in determining the exposure of humans to bioaerosols because people spend most of their time indoors. however, there are few studies focusing on indoor bioaerosols originating from outdoors. In this study, indoor versus outdoor size-resolved concentrations and particle asymmetry factors of airborne fluorescent bioaerosols in an office room were measured continuously for 6 days （144 h） using a fluorescent bioaerosol detector. The windows and door of this room were closed to ensure that there was only air infiltration; moreover, any human activities were ceased during sampling to inhibit effects of indoor sources. We focused on fine particles, since few coarse particles enter indoor environments, when windows and doors are closed. Both indoor and outdoor fluorescent bioaerosol size distributions were fit with two-mode lognormal distributions （indoor R2 = 0.935, outdoor R2 = 0.938）. Asymmetry factor distributions were also fit with lognormal distributions （indoor R2 = 0.992, outdoor R2 = 0.992）. Correlations between indoor and outdoor fluorescent bioaerosol concentrations show significant concentration-attenuation and a time lag during the study period. A two-parameter, semi-empirical model was used to predict concentrations of indoor fluorescent bioaerosols of outdoor origin. The measured and predicted concentrations had a linear relationship for the studied size fractions, with an R2 for all size fractions of larger than 0.83.

Simulating FAS-induced apoptosis by using P systems

In contrast to differential equations, P systems are an unconventional model of computation which takes into consideration the discrete character of the quantity of components and the inherent randomness that exists in biological phenomena. The key feature of P systems is their compartmentalised structure which represents the heterogeneity of the structural organisation of the cells, and where one can take into account the role played by membranes in the functioning of the system, for example signalling at the cell surface, selective uptake of substances from the media, diffusion across different compartments, etc. We show here that P systems can be a reliable tool for Systems Biology and could even outperform in some cases the current simulation techniques based on differential equations. We will also use a strategy based on the well known Gillespie algorithm but running on more than one compartment called Multi-compartmental Gillespie Algorithm.

Effect of Sn precursor on the synthesis of SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 particles via polymeric precursor method

SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 particles were synthesized using the polymeric precursor method with different Sn salt precursors： SnCl2.2h2O, SnCl4.5h20, or Sn citrate. Sb2O3 was used as the precursor of Sb, and the molar ratio of nsn：nsb was held constant. FTIR and TGA/DTA were used to examine the influence of the Sn precursor on the formation and thermal decomposition of the Sn and Sn-Sb complexes. The calcination products obtained from heating the Sn and Sn-Sb complexes at 500℃ in air were analyzed using XRD and TEM analysis. The results revealed that the SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 formation temperatures depended on the nature of the Sn precursor. The calcination products were found to be SnO2 and Sb-doped SnO2 particles, which crystallized in a tetragonal cassiterite structure with a highly preferred （110） planar orientation. The Sn precursor and the presence of Sb in the SnO2 matrix strongly influenced the crystallinity and lattice parameters.

Are assemblages of the fireworm hermodice carunculata enhanced in sediments beneath offshore fish cages?

Abundances of the fireworm hermodice carunculata were counted through a monitoring assessment study of fish cages in Barranco hondo（NE Tenerife）. Seven campaigns were conducted from November 2007 to June 2010 and temporal variations were found, as well as differences among sampling stations. The polychaete h. carunculata obtained its highest abundance in sediments beneath fish cages throughout the study period. Thus, the assemblages of this omnivorous species were favoured by the presence of fish cages.

hP30-2, a mitochondrial PRAT protein for import of signal sequence-less precursor proteins in Arabidopsis thaliana

Chloroplasts and mitochondria contain a family of putative preprotein and amino acid transporters designated PRAT. here, we analyzed the role of two previously characterized PRAT protein family members, encoded by At3g49560 （hP30） and At5g24650 （hP30-2）, in planta using a combination of genetic, cell biological and biochemical approaches. Expression studies and green fluorescent protein tagging identified hP30-2 both in chloroplasts and mitochondria, whereas hP30 was located exclusively in chloroplasts. Biochemical evidence was obtained for an association of mitochondrial hP30-2 with two distinct protein complexes, one containing the inner membrane translocase TIM22 and the other containing an alternative NAD（P）h dehydrogenase subunit （NDCI） implicated in a respiratory complex 1-1ike electron trans- port chain. Through its association with TIM22, hP30-2 is involved in the uptake of carrier proteins and other, hydrophobic membrane proteins lacking cleavable N h2-terminal presequences, whereas hP30-2＇s interaction with NDC1 may permit controlling mitochondrial biogenesis and activity.
