Stroke care during the COVID-19 outbreak in Spain: the experience of Spanish stroke units

Background and purpose Spain has been heavily affected by *** of resources for managing the outbreak might have caused a disruption in stroke *** study analyses the impact on stroke care of reorganising the healthcare system in response to the first COVID-19 outbreak peak in Spain and the strategies adopted by Spanish stroke units to deal with this *** and methods We obtained data from a structured survey sent to the responsible of stroke units across the *** recorded the number of strokes,stroke code activations,intravenous thrombolysis treatments and mechanical thrombectomies during February and March 2019 and *** also collected information on the impact on workflow metrics and on the availability of specialised neurological care and rehabilitation treatments,the characteristics of stroke care for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection and the impact on human *** compared the activity data between 2019 and 2020 and the information on activity and impact on stroke care between regions classified according to the disease incidence *** Fifty-seven(75%)of all stroke units in Spain responded to the *** was an overall reduction in admissions for all stroke types during the outbreak’s peak and in the number of stroke code activations and intravenous thrombolysis treatments,results that were independent of the COVID-19 incidence *** reported a delay in workflow metrics and a reduction of admissions to stroke units,outpatient clinics and rehabilitation *** pathways and protocols for managing stroke patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection have been *** The COVID-19 outbreak has jeopardised all phases of stroke *** a consequence,some patients with stroke did not receive adequate treatment.

Thermal analysis of olive tree pruning and the by-products obtained by its gasification and pyrolysis: The effect of some heavy metals on their devolatilization behavior

In this work, the effect of the presence of nickel and lead in thermal decomposition of olive tree pruning (OTP), OTP-char and OTP-ashes was studied by thermogravimetry. Experiments were conducted in two kinds of atmosphere (nitrogen atmosphere and oxidizing atmosphere with 20% of O2) at a heating rate of 10 ℃/min. This investigation describes the chemical, physical and fuel properties of the OTP, which shows a similar composition to other lignocellulosic materials such as hazelnut husk and wood sawdust. In addition, SEM analysis indicated that OTP-char surface is higher than OTP surface with plenty of holes and channels. It makes the char an ideal support for metal retention specially for Pb metal (OTP retained 8.55 mg/g whereas OTP char retained 11.57 mg/g). On the other hand, metal retention occurred by adsorption or ion exchange, according to the IR spectrum of the samples. The results of thermogravimetric tests proved that the presence of lead did not have a strong effect on the decomposition of the samples, since TG and DTG curves were very similar. However, nickel increased the mass loss rate, accelerating the decomposition process, showing higher peaks in DTG curves. Additionally, for temperatures higher than 360 ℃, the volatilization of the samples was improved in the nickel-polluted sample, achieving a higher mass loss, getting more energy from the biomass and reducing the quantity of residues left after the process.

Purpose:To examine the effects of a school-based karate intervention on academic achievement,psychosocial functioning,and physical fitness in children aged 7-8 ***:Twenty schools in 5 different European countries(2 second-grade classrooms per school)participated in a cluster randomized controlled trial(Sport at School trial).Participants were assigned to either a control group,which continued with their habitual physical education lessons,or to an intervention group,which replaced these lessons with a 1-year karate intervention(Karate Mind and Movement program).A total of 721 children(344 girls and 377 boys,7.4±0.5 years old,mean±SD)completed the study,of which 333 and 388 were assigned to the control group and intervention group,*** included academic performance(average grade),psychosocial functioning(Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for parents),and different markers of physical fitness(cardiorespiratory fitness,balance,and flexibility).Results:The intervention provided small but significant benefits compared to the control group for academic achievement(d=0.16;p=0.003),conduct problems(d=-0.28;p=0.003),cardiorespiratory fitness(d=0.36;p0.05).Conclusion:A 1-year school-based karate intervention was effective in improving academic achievement,conduct problems,and physical fitness in primary school *** results support the inclusion of karate during physical education lessons.

Tracheoesophageal fistulas in coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic:A case report

BACKGROUND Tracheoesophageal fistulas(TEFs)can be described as a pathological communication between the trachea and the *** to their origin,they may be classified as benign or *** TEFs occur mostly as a consequence of prolonged mechanical ventilation,particularly among patients exposed to endotracheal cuff *** the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 virus pandemic,the amount of patients requiring prolonged ventilation rose,which in turn increased the incidence of *** SUMMARY We report the cases of 14 patients with different comorbidities such as being overweight,or having been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus or systemic *** most common symptoms on arrival were dyspnea and *** all cases,the diagnosis of TEFs was made through upper *** on the location and size of each fistula,either endoscopic or surgical treatment was *** patients were treated *** closure of the defect was achieved through over the scope clips in two patients,while three of them required endoscopic metal stenting.A hemoclip was used to successfully treat one patient,and it was used temporarily for another patient pended *** treatment was performed in patients with failed endoscopic management,leading to successful defect *** patients died before receiving corrective treatment and four died later on in their clinical course due to infectious *** The incidence of TEFs increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic(from 0.5%to 1.5%).We believe that endoscopic treatment should be considered as an option for this group of patients,since evidence reported in the literature is still a growing ***,we propose an algorithm to lead intervention in patients presenting with TEFs due to prolonged intubation.

We systemically investigate the nature of Ce 4f electrons in structurally layered heavy-fermion compounds Ce_(m)M_(n)In_(3m+2n)(with M=Co,Rh,Ir,and Pt,m=1,2,n=0–2),at low temperature using on-resonance angle-resolved photoemission *** heavy quasiparticle bands f^(0),f^(1/7/2)and f^(1/5/2),are observed in all compounds,whereas their intensities and energy locations vary greatly with *** strong f0 states imply that the localized electron behavior dominates the Ce 4f *** Ce 4f electrons are partially hybridized with the conduction electrons,making them have the dual nature of localization and *** quantitative comparison reveals that the f^(1/5/2)–f^(0)intensity ratio is more suitable to reflect the 4f-state hybridization strength.

Intermediaries and Targets of the Oxidative Stress Induced by Natural Sunlight in Escherichia coil

The lethal effect produced by sunlight in bacteria depends on the photodynamic action of the ultraviolet component of the radiation. Neither the reactive oxygen species involved nor the targets for damage have been certainly identified, and the aim of this study was to address these issues. During exposures to natural sunlight, photo-protection provided by nitrogen sparging was compared with which provided by the addition of L-histidine （an efficient scavenger for hydroxyl radical and singlet oxygen） or mannitol （an hydroxyl radical scavenger which reacts poorly with singlet oxygen） to the irradiation medium. Both scavengers reproduced for the most part the effect of oxygen depletion, indicating that damage depends mainly on hydroxyl radical generation. Survival of irradiated bacteria decreased considerably when they were cultured using a substrate unsuitable for fermentation, suggesting that respiration impairment is a key factor in cell killing. This observation is in keeping with the notion that the respiratory chain is the main target for the action of sunlight in Escherichia coli.

An ionic fluid based on aromatic heterocyclic family constituted by 1,3-diazole groups was investigated. The purpose is to describe their electrochemical characteristics in order to identify the strategy to avoid the A36 carbon steel surface degradation by using electrochemical measurements. We found that the linear polarization resistance reveals an increasing value when the organic unsaturated cyclic ionic fluid was added to the corrosive electrolyte. The polarization curves and Tafel Extrapolation obtained to know the slopes tafel and the inhibitor efficiency from current density (icorr) shows a high efficiency inhibition value.

First Late Triassic Record of a Paleoentomofauna from South America(Malargüe Basin,Mendoza Province,Argentina)

Late Middle Triassic to early Late Triassic insects from Argentina have been previously described from the Bermejo and Cuyana Basins where they have been recovered from the Ischichuca-Los Rastros and Potrerillos-Cacheuta Formations, respectively. The insect fauna discussed herein was collected during field studies in 1986/1987 from the Llantenes section （Norian to Rhaetian？ Late Triassic）, which is situated in the Malargiie Basin in southern Mendoza province. The insect remains were found in the upper part of the Llantenes section （Llantenes Formation）, which is built up of two coarsening-upwards cycles reflecting a deltaic progradation of a fluvial into a lacustrine environment （lower part）, succeeded by repeated progradatious into a floodplaindominated environment （upper part; with finds of insects, conchostracans, fish remains, plant fragments, and drifted logs）. The new finds represent the youngest Triassic insect records described from Argentina and even from South America in its entirety. There is only one contemporaneous fossil assemblage in Gondwana： in the Ciarence/Moreton Basin （Aberdare Conglomerate; Late Norian） in Australia. The new Triassic insects include an impression of an isolated Mecopterida-like wing （Mendozachorista volkheimeri gen. et sp. nov.; Mendozachoristidae fam. nov.）, coleopteran elytra of the Permosynidae （Ademosyne rosenfeldi sp. nov. and Ademosyne Uantenesensis sp. nov.） and other isolated body fragments. This new Late Triassic entomofauna from Argentina is of considerable importance in the reconstruction of the biotic recovery of continental environments in Gondwana after the catastrophic mass extinction at the P/T boundary.
