Mimo.a diplo.richa is an invasive perennial, scrambling, tho.ny, legumino.s shrub o. neo.ro.ical o.igin widely ackno.ledged as a majo. eco.o.ic, agricultural and eco.o.ical burden in its intro.uced ranges. Altho.gh the plant is tho.ght to.have been present in Nigeria fo. well o.er two.decades, its mo.e and time o. intro.uctio. is uncertain. In spite o. the co.tinuing spread o., and the menace caused by M. diplo.richa in Nigeria, no.attempt has been made to.map the distributio. o. the plant co.ntrywide. Therefo.e, we co.ducted a co.ntrywide survey between 2007 and 2009, spo.so.ed by the Weed Science So.iety o. Nigeria (WSSN) to.determine the spread and status o. Mimo.a diplo.richa in Nigeria. A further o.jective o. this paper was to.review literatures o. Mimo.a diplo.richa in Nigeria and elsewhere to.enable co.pariso.. In this paper, we repo.t o. the spread, distributio. and pro.lems o. Mimo.a diplo.richa in Nigeria based o. the field mo.ito.ing surveys co.ducted. The distributio. o. this invasive plant in Nigeria has been mapped and is presented to.ether with its eco.o.y and pro.lems being caused. Since the early 1990s, the weed has started to.spread and invade many parts o. the co.ntry causing significant damage to.many natural and semi natural eco.ystems. The different co.tro. o.tio.s used by farmers to.co.tro. Mimo.a diplo.richa in Nigeria are discussed. Based o. the successful co.tro. o. this invasive plant using the bio.o.tro. agent, Hetero.sylla spinulo.a in co.ntries such as Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG), we discussed the bio.o.ical co.tro. pro.pects fo. the management o. Mimo.a diplo.richa in Nigeria. Such co.tro. attempts stands to.benefit fro. internatio.al co.labo.atio.s between Nigerian institutio.s and a ho.t o. o.hers in Australia, PNG and/o. Brazil. Finally three majo. causes fo. the massive and co.tinuing spread o. this weed in Nigeria are presented with reco.mendatio.s fo. the Nigerian go.ernment and institutio.s to. 1) fo.mulate po.icies and
