The early Cambrian pentamerous microfossil Olivooides/Punctatus in South China, which is characterized by a diagnostic stellate tubular apex, has been well-known for its almost complete development sequence that can be confidently traced from embryos and hatched juveniles, to conical adults. However, its zoological affinity remains highly controversial. Here we describe the internal microanatomic structures of the soft-body inside the peridermal theca of Olivooides multisulcatus Qian, 1977, including interradial pairs of tentacles, adradial and perradial frenula, perradial oral marginal lappets and twins of perradial gastric saccule-like humps as well as a circular velarium with striated coronal muscles. Particularly, one specimen shows bifurcated velarial canals along the bell aperture. Both the components of the soft-body and the external theca （or cyst） are arranged in perfect pentaradial symmetry. These characteristics are more compatible with those of living cubomedusans and co-occurring Cambrian athecate embryonic cubozoans. Concerning the presence of peridermal theca, Olivooides most likely represents an extinct thecate stem-group cubomedusae but devoid of both perradial eyes and specialized pedalia. The well-grown soft body inside the peridermal tube displays a set of mixed features of both polyp and medusa.

Regioselective Direct Carboxylation of 2-Naphthol with Supercritical CO2in the Presence of K2CO3

A direct regioselective preparation of 2-hydroxynaphthalene-6-carboxylic acid, a useful industrial intermediate of aro-matic polyester from 2-naphthol was conducted by use of excess amount of K2CO3 (10-fold molar to 2-naphthol) under supercritical CO2 at 10 MPa and 473 K. The obtained yield under this condition was ca. 20 mol% to 2-naphthol. The further investigations may provide an alternative process to the conventional Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, because of no use of strong alkali and recoverability of K2CO3. Theoretical explanation about the regioselectivity was achieved by means of DFT calculations.

The microwave induced argon plasma was applied to the preparation of NaOH-activated carbon from sugar cane bagasse. The distinguished feature of the heating technique with this cold plasma is the short operation time. The carbonization and the activation process were finalized in one step within 3 min. The prepared activated carbon with NaOH ratio 3 to bagasse characterized using N2 adsorption of type IV (IUPAC classification) to give specific surface area of 1980 m2/g and mesopore volume of 0.73 ml/g. It also showed a higher specific capacitance of 201 F/g in 1 M H2SO4 solution (with standard three electrodes) than the corresponding one by the conventional heating, previously reported. The other features were the absence of oxygen groups and the presence of carbon centered stable radicals, detected by ESR spectra, on the surface.

A colony of macro-fossils Akouemma hemisphaeria has been described in the Paleoproterozoic sedimentary basin of Okondja, Gabon. These fossils are classified into two groups according to their spheroidal or elongated forms. The spheroidal shapes are similar, have a tripartite structure with two hemispheres and a median disc and gradually pass to the elongated forms. These elongated forms have a pronounced bipartite tendency to two “hemispheres” separated by a median surface, and often have several ovoid “pieces” attached. The elongated specimens show both lateral growth marks and signs of fission. Growth marks are characterized by unidirectional homogeneous side elongations and lateral bud-like protuberances. The signs of fission are marked by circular furrows perpendicular to the direction of elongation, called “constriction furrows” with varying depths depending on the degree of fission of the specimen and internal vertical “division planes”. All of these ovoid and elongated specimens have undergone significant initial deformations due mainly to mutual lateral compressions in tabular beds. The Akouemma hemisphaeria macro-organisms, which were primitive probably sessile organisms, lived on the seafloor. They provide the oldest known record of macro-organisms on Earth having vegetative growth and asexual reproduction by budding, lateral elongation and fission. Their mutual lateral deformations would result from their growth.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) including nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) is globally increasing and has become a world-wide health problem. Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus or hepatitis C virus(HCV) is associated with hepatic steatosis. Viral hepatitis-associated hepatic steatosis is often caused by metabolic syndrome including obesity,type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or dyslipidemia. It has been reported that HCV genotype 3 exerts direct metabolic effects that lead to hepatic steatosis. In this review,the differences between NAFLD/NASH and viral hepatitis-associated steatosis are discussed.

Endoscopic management of unresectable malignant gastroduodenal obstruction with a nitinol uncovered metal stent: a prospective Japanese multicenter study

AIM: To determine the safety and efficacy of endoscopic duodenal stent placement in patients with malignant gastric outlet ***: This prospective, observational, multicenter study included 39 consecutive patients with malignant gastric outlet obstruction. All patients underwent endoscopic placement of a nitinol, uncovered, selfexpandable metal stent. The primary outcome was clinical success at 2 wk after stent placement that was defined as improvement in the Gastric Outlet Obstruction Scoring System score relative to the ***: Technical success was achieved in all duodenal stent procedures. Procedure-related complications occurred in 4 patients(10.3%) in the form of mild pneumonitis. No other morbidities or mortalitieswere observed. The clinical success rate was 92.3%. The mean survival period after stent placement was 103 d. The mean period of stent patency was 149 d and the patency remained acceptable for the survival period. Stent dysfunction occurred in 3 patients(7.7%) on account of tumor ***: Endoscopic management using duodenal stents for patients with incurable malignant gastric outlet obstruction is safe and improved patients' quality of life.

In February 2007,a 41-year-old Japanese male was admitted to our hospital with increasing upper abdominal pain.A contrast-enhanced computed tomography(CT)scan of the abdomen demonstrated a well-demarcated,hypodense cystic mass with a thickened wall in the *** laboratory results were within normal limits,except for increased carcinoembryonic antigen,carbohydrate antigen 19-9,DUPAN-2 and *** patient was diagnosed as having a mesenteric malignant cyst,and during a laparotomy,a right hemicolectomy with mesenteric cystectomy was performed without rupture in March *** the microscopic findings,there was a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma in the inner surface of the cyst and in the fibrous connective tissue of the hypertrophic cystic *** tumor cells were immunohistochemically reactive to cytokeratin(CK)7,CK18 and *** remnant of the malignancy was detected in the resected margin of the colon,cyst,liver or peritoneum nor was an uptake detected in an 18[F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/CT examination of other ***,the malignancy was concluded to be a serous cystadenocarcinoma of the *** months after the operation,the patient died from peritonitis carcinomatosa due to a small intestine *** report suggests mesenteric cystadenocarcinomas originating in the ovary,oviduct and intestinal mucosa,but these were ruled out in our *** this report,we discuss a case of the malignant transformation of a cyst into adenocarcinoma,which to our knowledge has never been previously reported in a male patient.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection is a major cause of acute hepatitis and occasionally leads to acute liver failure in both developing and developed *** effective vaccines for HAV are available,the development of new antivirals against HAV may be important for the control of HAV infection in developed countries where no universal vaccination program against HAV exists,such as *** are two forms of antiviral agents against HAV:direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) and host-targeting agents (HTAs).Studies using small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) have suggested that the HAV internal ribosomal entry site (IRES) is an attractive target for the control of HAV replication and *** the HTAs,amantadine and interferon-lambda 1 (IL-29) inhibit HAV IRES-mediated translation and HAV *** kinase (JAK) inhibitors inhibit La protein expression,HAV IRES activity,and HAV *** on this review,both DAAs and HTAs may be needed to control effectively HAV infection,and their use should continue to be explored.
