Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance pattern of bacterial strains isolated from patients with urinary tract infection in Messalata Central Hospital, Libya

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of urinary tract infection among patients at Messalata Central Hospital, Libya, to identify the causative bacteria, and to explore their resistance pattern to antimicrobials. Methods: A total number of 1 153 urine samples were collected from patients, who attended daily to Messalata Central Hospital, Libya, in a study extended for one year. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing and isolates typing were done using Phoenix BD(BD diagnostic). Resistance was confirmed manually using agar disk diffusion method. Results: Of the 1 153 urine samples tested, 160(13.9%) samples were positive, from which 17 different, solely Gram negative, uropathogens were identified. Escherichia coli were the most prevalent(55.6%) bacteria, followed by Klebsiella pneumoniae subspecies pneumoniae(16.3%), Proteus mirabilis(6.3%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa(5.6%), Enterobacter cloacae and Klebsiella oxytoca(2.5%, each), Citrobacter koseri and Providencia rettgeri(1.9%, each), Acinetobacter baumannii, Enterobacter aerogenes and Proteus vulgaris(1.3%, each), and Aeromonas caviae, Citrobacter freundii, Cronobacter sakazakii, Enterobacter amnigenus biogroup 2, Pseudomonas putida and Serratia marcescens(0.6%, each). The isolated uropathogens showed increased levels of resistance ranged from 10.5% to 64.5%, with an overall resistance of 28.9%. Amikacin was the most effective antimicrobial followed by Imipenem and Meropenem(0%, 0.6% and 2.5% resistance, respectively); while, Cephalothin and Ampicillin were the least(80.6% and 90.0% resistance, respectively) effective. Conclusions: The obtained results emphasized the emergence of highly resistant bacteria to most of tested antimicrobials and raise the alarm for physicians to change their treatment pattern depending on antimicrobial susceptibility results.

Image-denoising techniques are widely used to defend against Adversarial Examples(AEs).However,denoising alone cannot completely eliminate adversarial *** remaining perturbations tend to amplify as they propagate through deeper layers of the network,leading to ***,image denoising compromises the classification accuracy of original *** address these challenges in AE defense through image denoising,this paper proposes a novel AE detection *** proposed technique combines multiple traditional image-denoising algorithms and Convolutional Neural Network(CNN)network *** used detector model integrates the classification results of different models as the input to the detector and calculates the final output of the detector based on a machine-learning voting *** analyzing the discrepancy between predictions made by the model on original examples and denoised examples,AEs are detected *** technique reduces computational overhead without modifying the model structure or parameters,effectively avoiding the error amplification caused by *** proposed approach demonstrates excellent detection performance against mainstream AE *** results show outstanding detection performance in well-known AE attacks,including Fast Gradient Sign Method(FGSM),Basic Iteration Method(BIM),DeepFool,and Carlini&Wagner(C&W),achieving a 94%success rate in FGSM detection,while only reducing the accuracy of clean examples by 4%.

Enhancing laccase stability and activity for dyes decolorization using ZIF-8@MWCNT nanocomposite

The continuous use of chemical dyes in various industries,and their discharge into industrial effluents,results in severe problems to human life and water *** have the ability to decolorize dyes and toxic chemicals in industrial effluents as green *** possible industrial applications have been limited by poor reusability,low stability,and loss of free laccase *** this research,lac-case was immobilized on zeolitic imidazolate framework coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes(Laccase@ZIF-8@MWCNTs)via metal affinity adsorption to develop an easy separable and stable *** optimum reaction conditions for immobilized laccase are at a pH of 3.0 and a temperature of 60℃.The immobilized laccase was enhanced in storage and thermal *** results indicated that Laccase@ZIF-8@MWCNTs still maintained 68%of its original activity after 10 times of repeated *** importantly,the biocatalytic system was applied for decolorization of different dyes(20 mg·L^(-1))without a mediator,and up to 97.4%for Eriochrome black T and 95.6%Acid red 88 was achieved in 25 *** with these properties may be used in a variety of environmental and industrial applications.

Highlights•This study explores features of professional learning community(PLC)models in the educational contexts in Bahrain and Oman.•Findings based on the case studies of PLCs in two private schools in Bahrain and Oman,and theoretical input from international PLC literature has implications for policy and practice.•Study recommends promoting PLC approaches in the Bahraini and Omani educational systems in pre-and in-service teacher training programs,adapting best international PLC practices to the specific educational contexts of Bahrain and Oman,preparing school principals to lead PLC in their schools,providing human and financial support to these communities,and making school cultures more collaborative.•This study highlights the importance of the PLC approach,expands the existing conceptual/analytical framework,demonstrates how this approach is being used in two schools,and encourages other practitioners and researchers to embrace PLC.

Diversity of cultivable endophytic bacteria associated with halophytes in Xinjiang of China and their plant beneficial traits

Endophytic bacteria from halophytes have a wide range of application prospects in various fields,such as plant growth-promoting,biocontrol activity and stress *** current study aimed to identify cultivable endophytic bacteria associated with halophytes grown in the salt-affected soil in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region,China and to evaluate their plant beneficial traits and enzyme-producing *** bacteria were isolated from Reaumuria soongorica(PalL Maxim.),Artemisia carvifolia(Buch.-*** ***.),Peganum harmala *** Suaeda dendroides(***.)by using the cultural-dependent *** we classified these bacteria based on the difference between their sequences of 16S rRNA(16S ribosomal RNA)*** showed that the isolated bacteria from *** belonged to the genera Brucella,Bacillus and *** bacteria from *** belonged to the genera Micromonospora and *** bacteria from *** belonged to the genera Paramesorhizobium,Bacillus and *** bacteria from *** belonged to the genus ***,the genus Bacillus was detected in the three above plants,indicating that Bacillus is a common taxon of endophytic bacteria in ***,our results found that about 37.50%of the tested strains showed strong protease-producing activity,6.25%of the tested strains showed strong cellulase-producing activity and 12.50%of the tested strains showed moderate lipase-producing ***,all isolated strains were positive for IAA(3-Indoleacetic acid)production,31.25%of isolated strains exhibited a moderate phosphate solubilization activity and 50.00%of isolated strains exhibited a weak siderophore production *** findings suggest that halophytes are valuable resources for identifying microbes with the ability to increase host plant growth and health in salt-affected soils.

Ferula spp. are traditional medicinal plants found in arid land. Large-scale excavation for extracting bioactive compounds from the plants in arid regions of Xinjiang over the last few years has, however, significandy decreased their distributions. Due to the urgent need for preservation of these plant resources, along with the need of searching for alternative source of the useful metabolites, it is important to screen the endophytic microbial resources associated with the plant Ferula sinkiangensis K. M. Shen. In the study, a total of 125 endophytic bacteria belonging to 3 phyla, 13 orders, 23 families, and 29 genera were isolated based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing data. Among the different isolates, three strains isolated from roots were potential novel species of the genera Porphyrobacter, Paracoccus and draycofatopsis. In this study, 79.4% and 57.1% of the total isolates were capable of producing indole-3-acetic acid （IAA） and siderophore, respectively. And, 40.6% of the strains inhibit the growth of fungal pathogen Afternaria alternata, 17.2% and 20.2% strains were positive for antagonism against Vertidllium dahlia 991 and V. dahlia 7, respectively. These results demonstrated that E sinkiangensis is a rich reservoir of endophytic bacterial resources with potential for production of biologically important functions such as plant growth-promoting factors.

In-hospital outcomes of transapical versus surgical aortic valve replacement: from the U.S. national inpatient sample

OBJECTIVE To compare the outcomes of transapical transcatheter aortic valve replacement(TA-TAVR)and surgical aortic valve replacement(SAVR)using a large US population *** The *** Inpatient Sample was queried for all patients who underwent TA-TAVR or SAVR during the *** primary outcome was all-cause in-hospital *** outcomes were in-hospital stroke,pericardiocentesis,pacemaker insertion,mechanical ventilation,vascular complications,major bleeding,acute kidney injury,length of stay,and cost of *** were modeled using multi-variable logistic regression for binary outcomes and generalized linear models for continuous *** A total of 1560 TA-TAVR and 44,280 SAVR patients were *** who underwent TA-TAVR were older and *** to SAVR,TA-TAVR correlated with a higher mortality(4.5%vs.2.7%,effect size(SMD)=0.1)and higher periprocedural *** multivariable analysis,both TA-TAVR and SAVR had a similar adjusted risk for in-hospital ***-TAVR correlated with lower odds of bleeding with(adjusted OR(aOR)=0.26;95%CI:0.18-0.38;P<0.001),and a shorter length of stay(adjusted mean ratio(aMR)=0.77;95%CI:0.69-0.84;P<0.001),but higher cost(aMR=1.18;95%CI:1.10-1.28;P<0.001).No significant differences in other study *** subgroup analysis,TA-TAVR in patients with chronic lung disease had higher odds for mortality(aOR=3.11;95%CI:1.37-7.08;P=0.007).CONCLUSION The risk-adjusted analysis showed that TA-TAVR has no advantage over SAVR except for patients with chronic lung disease where TA-TAVR has higher mortality.

Potential of Photovoltaic Industry in Egypt

PV （photovoltaic） market is dominated by Europe, especially Germany and Spain. However, the PV industry leaders recently exist in Asia. The huge market growth require industry growth, but with competitive cost. The electricity shortage in Egypt makes transferring to photovoltaic technology necessary, especially with the high solar radiation. The only reason why grid parity is not yet reached in Egypt is the elevated subsidiary of conventional electricity. If this subsidy is transformed to incentives for using and manufacturing solar cells, the situation will vary. This article shows that transferring PV industry to Egypt has a potential of cost saving of 5.7%, which could be translated either into competitive price or higher return on investment. This work is not a feasibility study. However, based on the cost structure of each phase in the PV industry value chain, the benefit （5.7% cost reduction potential） of transferring the industry to Egypt is worthy to accomplish the needed feasibility study.

Thyme oil and thymol abrogate doxorubicin-induced nephrotoxicity and cardiotoxicity in Wistar rats via repression of oxidative stress and enhancement of antioxidant defense mechanisms

This study aimed to assess the preventive effects of thyme oil and thymol on doxorubicin(DOX)-induced renotoxicity,cardiotoxicity,and oxidative stress in Wistar *** oil was subjected to GC-MS analysis,which indicated that thymol was the major constituent representing 33.896%.Rats intraperitoneally injected with DOX at a dose of 2 mg/kg b.w./one per week for 7 weeks were co-treated with thyme oil and its major constituent,thymol,at doses 250 and 100 mg/kg b.w./every other day,respectively,by oral gavage for the same *** oil and thymol markedly ameliorated the raised levels of serum urea,uric acid,and creatinine in DOX-administered *** also reduced the elevated activities of serum CK-MB and *** oil was more effective than thymol in decreasing the elevated serum creatinine level and serum CK-MB activity in DOX-administered rats,thereby reflecting its more potent effect on kidney and heart *** peroxidation significantly decreased while GSH level and GST and GPx activities significantly increased in kidney and heart of DOX-administered rats treated with thyme oil and *** DOX-induced perturbed kidney histological changes including congestion of glomerulus tuft,inflammatory cells infiltration,protein cast in lumina of the renal tubule,and thickening of the parietal layer of Bowman’s capsule were remarkably ameliorated as a result of treatment with thyme oil and thymol;thyme oil was more *** addition,DOX-induced deleterious heart histological alterations,including intramuscular infiltration of inflammatory cells,focal necrosis of cardiac myocytes,and edema,were remarkably reduced by treatment with thyme oil and ***,it can be concluded that DOX could induce marked toxicity in kidney and heart,and the treatment with thyme oil or thymol produced potential improvement of kidney and heart function and histological integrity via repression of oxidative stress and enhancement of antioxidant defense mechanisms.
