Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 expression in villitis and in normal chorionic villi from term (37- 42 weeks of gestation) placentas with or without villitis. Study design: A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 expression in villitis (n = 16) and in normal villi from placentas with or without villitis (n = 16). Villitis was diagnosed with antibodies to human leukocyte antigen- DR and CD3 and hematoxylin and eosin staining of serial sections; intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 reactivity in syncytiotrophoblast was confirmed with antibodies to intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 and cytokeratin. Results: Villitis lesions had higher syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 expression than normal chorionic villi from placentas with (19.9% vs 3.5% villi; P mal villi from placentas with villitis had higher syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 than villi from placentas without villitis (3.5% vs 0.31% villi; P more syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 expression than placentas without villitis. The finding that normal villi from placentas with villitis have more syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule1 than normal villi from placentas without villitis suggests that syncytiotrophoblast intercellular adhesion molecule- 1 could be the first step in villitis development.

Hydrogen as an interstitial solute at grain boundaries(GBs)can have a catastrophic im.a.t on the mechanical properties of many *** the global research effort,the underlying hydrogen-GB interactions in polycrystals remain inadequately *** this study,using Voronoi tessellations and atomistic simulations,we elucidate the hydrogen segregation energy spectrum.a. the GBs of polycrystalline nickel by exploring all the topologically favorable segregation *** distinct peaks in the energy spectrum.a.e identified,corresponding to different structural *** first peak(-0.205 eV)represents the most favorable segregation sites at GB core,while the second and third peaks account for the sites at GB *** incorporating a thermodynamic model,the spectrum enables the determination of the equilibrium hydrogen concentrations at GBs,unveiling a remarkable two to three orders of magnitude increase com.a.ed to the bulk hydrogen concentration reported in experimental *** identified structures from the GB spectrum exhibit vastly different behaviors in hydrogen segregation and diffusion,with the low-barrier channels inside GB core contributing to short-circuit diffusion,while the high energy gaps between GB and neighboring lattice serving as on-plane diffusion *** square displacement analysis further confirms the findings,and shows that the calculated GB diffusion coefficient is three orders of magnitude greater than that of *** present study has a significant implication for practical applications since it offers a tool to bridge the gap between atomic-scale interactions and macroscopic behaviors in engineering materials.

Biodegradable nanoparticles such as chitosan nanoparticles (CSNPs) are used in sustainable agriculture since theyavoid damage to the environment;CSNPs have positive effects such as the accumulation of bioactive compoundsand increased productivity in plants. This study aimed to investigate the im.a.t of applying CSNPs on lettuce,specifically focusing on enzymatic activity, bioactive compounds, and yield. The trial was conducted using a completelyrandomized design, incorporating CSNPs: 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 mg mL−1. The doses of 0.4 mg mL−1improve yields up to 24.6% increases and 0.1 mg mL−1 of CSNPs increases total phenols by 31.2% and antioxidantcapacity by 34.6%. In addition, when low concentrations of CSNPs (0.05 and 0.1 mg L−1) were applied, anincrease in catalase was determined. The CSNPs represent a good alternative to be used as a biostimulant in sustainableagriculture because they improve the yield and quality of lettuce by increasing the bioactive compounds.

Biochar could help to stabilize soil organic （SOm） matter, thus sequestering carbon （C） into the soil. The aim of this work was to determine an easy method i） to estimate the effects of the addition of biochar and nutrients on the organic matter （SOm） mineralization in an artificial soil, proposed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development （OECD）, amended with glucose and ii） to m.a.ure the amount of labile organic matter （glucose） that can be sorbed and thus be partially protected in the same soil, amended or not amended with biochar. A factorial experiment was designed to check the effects of three single factors （biochar, nutrients, and glucose） and their interactions on whole SOm mineralization. Soil samples were inoculated with a microbial inoculum.a.d preincubated to ensure that their biological activities were not limited by a small amount of microbial biomass, and then they were incubated in the dark at 21 ~C for 619 d. Periodical m.a.urements of C mineralized to carbon dioxide （CO2） were carried out throughout the 619-d incubation to allow the mineralization of both active and slow organic matter pools. The amount of sorbed glucose was calculated as the difference between the total and remaining amounts of glucose added in a soil extract. Two different models, the Freundlich and Langmuir models, were selected to assess the equilibrium isotherms of glucose sorption. The CO2-C release strongly depended on the presence of nutrients only when no biochar was added to the soil. The mineralization of organic matter in the soil amended with both biochar and glucose was equal to the sum of the mineralization of the two C sources separately. Furthermore, a significant amount of glucose can be sorbed on the biochar-amended soil, suggesting the involvement of physico-chemical mechanisms in labile organic matter protection.
