Glial cells are crucial for maintaining central nervous system(CNS)*** actively participate in immune responses,as well as form functional barriers,such as blood-brain barrier(BBB),which restrict the entry of pathogens and inflammatory mediators into the *** general,viral infections during the gestational period can alter the embryonic and fetal environment,and the related inflammatory response may affect neurodevelopment and lead to behavioral dysfunction during later stage of life,as highlighted by our group for Zika virus *** acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2(SARS-CoV-2)induces a cytokine storm and,during pregnancy,may be related to a more severe form of the coronavirus disease-19(COVID-19)and also to higher preterm birth ***-CoV-2 can also affect the CNS by inducing neurochemical remodeling in neural cells,which can compromise neuronal plasticity and synaptic ***,the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy on postnatal CNS,including brain development during childhood and adulthood,remains *** group has recently highlighted the impact of COVID-19 on the expression of molecular markers associated with neuropsychiatric disorders,which are strongly related to the inflammatory ***,based on these relationships,we discussed the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection either during pregnancy or in critical periods of neurodevelopment as a risk factor for neurological consequences in the offspring later in life,focusing on the potential role of glial ***,it is important to consider future and long-term public health concerns associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy.

Evaluation of p53 codon 72 polymorphism in adenocarcinomas of the colon and rectum in La Plata, Argentina

AIM： To evaluate the potential association between p53 codon 72 polymorphism and sporadic colorectal adenocarcinoma development, and human papillornavirus （HPV） infection. METHODS： One-hundred and nine controls and 53 patients with colon cancer from the city of La Plata, Argentina were analyzed, p53 codon 72 genotypes and HPV infection were identified using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction and nested polymerase chain reaction, respectively. RESULTS： The differences in the distribution ofp53 codon 72 polymorphisrn between the cases and controls were statistically significant. The arginine allele had a prevalence of 0.65 in controls and 0.77 in cases. The corresponding odds ratio for the homozygous arginine genotype was 2.08 （95% CI, 1.06-4.05; P〈0.05）. Lack of association was found between ,053 polymorphism and HPV infection in the set of adenocarcinomas. CONCLUSION： The findings of the present study indicate that p53 codon 72 arginine homozygous genotype may represent a genetic predisposing factor for colon cancer development. However, further studies are needed in order to elucidate the role of p53 codon 72 polymorphism in colorectal cancer.

Analysis of Irrigation Systems Employing Comparative Performance Indicators： A Benchmark Study for National Irrigation and Communal Irrigation Systems in Cagayan River Basin

Comparative performance analysis of four irrigation schemes within Cagayan River Basin was assessed using comparative performance indicators between the years 2008 and 2012. The objectives were to establish benchmarks for both productivity and performance of irrigation schemes along the valley and to inquire whether small schemes function better than large schemes. The performance evaluation study of the systems composed of three general performance indicators, based on three domains-（1） system operation performance; （2） agricultural productivity and economics; （3） financial performance. Each indicator was assessed based on the prescribed descriptors used by the International Water Management Institute （IWMI） and Food and Agriculture Organization （FAO）. Analysis showed an overall system performance efficiency of 59%, 55%, 47% and 36% for Magat River Integrated Irrigation System （MARI1S）, Lucban, Garab and Divisoria Communal Irrigation Systems （CIS）, respectively. In terms of annual productivity performance, Lucban CIS dominates the three other systems with 0.35 kg/m3, which was classified as moderately performing system, while the rest were classified with low productivity index. Financial sustainability of the systems were extremely poor with cost recovery ratio of 0, 0.33, 0.41 and 0.49 for Divisoria, Garab, Lucban and MARIIS, respectively, which were exceptionally below the standard value of at least one. Also, analysis of the indicators revealed that on average, large schemes performed similarly to small-scale schemes, but small schemes were more variable, particularly in input-use efficiency. The benchmarking study will provide strategic information to policy makers of agricultural and irrigation agencies on the existing weaknesses of irrigation systems in the country and determine in a more quantifiable terms levels of potential improvement and intervention targets.

Endoscopy-assisted transoral approach for parapharyngeal space tumors:Our experience and a systematic review of the literature

Background:Several approaches have been described for the excision of parapharyngeal space tumors(PPSTs).Advances in endoscopy gave a further stimulus to the use of the transoral ***:We present our experience with the endoscopy-assisted transoral approach(EATA)in this regard and a review of the most recent literature about EATA for PPSTs *** and Methods:We retrospectively analyzed our experience and systematically reviewed the literature about the outcomes of this ***:Seven PPSTs were completely excised,with three of them requiring a combined transcervical *** one case of postoperative wound dehiscence was registered,and the mean length of stay was 3.9 *** histopathological examination confirmed the results obtained with preoperative fine-needle aspiration biopsy in all cases and no recurrences were apparent after a mean follow-up of 28.1 ***:Magnetic resonance imaging,the modified Mallampati score and the 8 Ts criteria are useful instruments for the choice of the most appropriate surgical ***:In light of our experience and following other published series in the literature,we believe that EATA may represent a safe and effective approach for the treatment of the majority of PPSTs.

Passive Samplers Deployment in the Ayapel Swamp for Monitoring Temporal Dynamics of Mercury in the Water Column

Passive sampling is a simple and efficacious sampling technique that guarantees a safe collection and transportation of samples to the analysis site, and obtaining results with more temporal resolution. As a case of study, passive samplers were deployed in the Ayapel Swamp, Colombia, located in the influence zone of open pit gold mines. Mercury, iron and manganese were sampled at two different depths by the Chemcatcher? passive sampler and regular grab sampling. Additionally, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, pH and water temperature were measured. The results showed that depth and time did not have a significant influence (ANOVA, confidence level of 95%) on mercury concentration on both passive samplers and grab sampling. However, concentration of Fe and Hg in passive samplers had a high positive correlation, but it may be because depth increase during sampling period caused the dilution of both analytes. In conclusion, passive samplers proved to be a valuable tool for understanding the response of mercury to the Ayapel Swamp dynamics.

Curcumin,a natural product,has exhibited promising effects in both animal models and clinical trials,interacting with a multitude of factors linked to Inflammatory Bowel Disease(IBD).These factors encompass cytokines,oxidative stress-associated enzymes,and modulation of the intestinal ***,curcumin has demonstrated therapeutic potential in animal models of colitis,wherein it exerts a negative regulatory influence on pivotal signaling pathways such as PI3/Akt,JAK/STAT,andβ-***,it inhibits the expression of proinflammatory enzymes and co-stimulatory molecules(including RANKL,ICAM-1,CD205,CD256,TLR4,among others),while curbing immune cell chemotaxis,thereby attenuating the characteristic neutrophil infiltration observed in *** facet of curcumin’s action involves its modulation of the intestinal ***,the microbiota itself contributes to beneficial biotrans formations of curcumin,thereby enhancing its effectiveness in IBD *** a clinical front,curcumin has demonstrated the ability to induce clinical and/or endoscopic remission without any reported toxic ***,curcumin warrants consideration as an adjunctive therapy in IBD *** clinical investigations should concentrate on meticulously evaluating curcumin’s impact on these precise therapeutic targets.

Temperature-Independent Torsion Sensor Based on ＂Figure-of-Eight＂ Fiber Loop Mirror

An interrogation sensor system combining the ＂figure-of-eight＂ fiber loop mirror using a single directional 3×3 fiber optic coupler was proposed. One fiber loop mirror was formed by inserting a length of high birefringent optical fiber at the input ports of the 3×3 coupler. Splicing the output ports of the 3×3 coupler between them created the other fiber loop mirror. The introduction of this second loop gave rise to two polarization states of light with the same frequency but different optical phase. The mechanical torsion sensing head was located at the second loop and was exhibited an average modulus torsion sensitivity of 7.9×10^-4 degree/dB. Constructing super Gabor frames:the rational time-frequency lattice case

For a time-frequency lattice Λ = A Z d × B Z d , it is known that an orthonormal super Gabor frame of length L exists with respect to this lattice if and only if |det( AB) | = 1 L . The proof of this result involves various techniques from multi-lattice tiling and operator algebra theory, and it is far from constructive. In this paper we present a very general scheme for constructing super Gabor frames for the rational lattice case. Our method is based on partitioning an arbitrary fundamental domain of the lattice in the frequency domain such that each subset in the partition tiles R d by the lattice in the time domain. This approach not only provides us a simple algorithm of constructing various kinds of orthonormal super Gabor frames with flexible length and multiplicity, but also allows us to construct super Gabor (non-Riesz) frames with high order smoothness and regularity. Several examples are also presented.

Patient with Metastatic Breast Cancer Achieves Stable Disease for 5 Years on Graviola and Xeloda after Progressing on Multiple Lines of Therapy

Breast cancer (BC) is the most common malignancy in women and is second to lung cancer in terms of cancer mortality. Treatment of BC remains a challenge as current therapies are limited by toxicity and drug resistance. Graviola (Annona muricata) is a tree that grows in the tropics of North and South America. Traditionally, the leaves and stems from the graviola tree have been used for a wide range of human diseases including cancer.?In vitro?and?in vivo?studies demonstrate anticancer activity in BC however clinical studies are lacking. We present the first case demonstrating clinical benefit without side effects using graviola in a patient with BC whose disease was refractory to multiple lines of chemotherapy including anthracyclines and taxanes.

Conjunctival cytological examination,bacteriological culture,and antimicrobial resistance profiles of healthy Mediterranean buffaloes(Bubalus bubalis) from Southern Italy

Objective: To assess normal conjunctival cytological and bacteriological/fungal flora features in the Mediterranean buffalo(Bubalus bubalis).Methods: Swabs were taken from the inferior conjunctival sac of both eyes of 57 healthy female buffaloes aged 24–36 months, with no evidence of ocular disease, farmed in Campania region(Southern Italy), for microbiological analysis. Conjunctival eye specimens of both eyes were subsequently obtained by a cyto-brush, for cytological *** antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial isolates was also determined using the diskdiffusion method on Mueller Hinton agar ***: Cytological examination of conjunctival swab specimens(114 eyes) revealed epithelial cells(basal, intermediate, columnar and super ficial) in all samples, whereas neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells were present in 70%, 10% and 2% of samples,respectively. Microorganisms, for a total of 261 aerobic bacteria and 6 fungi, were isolated from 112/114 conjunctival samples [98.25%; 95% con fidence interval(CI): 93.18–99.70]. Only two conjunctival swabs did not yield bacteria and/or fungi(2/114, 1.75%;95% CI: 0.30–6.82). Gram-positive aerobes were most commonly cultured(181/261,69.35%; 95% CI: 63.31–74.81), with Enterococcus faecium and Staphylococcus lentus predominating. Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated as Gram-negative bacteria(80/261, 30.65%; 95% CI: 25.19–36.69). The antimicrobial resistance patterns of the isolated bacteria showed amoxycillin/clavulanic acid and cephalothin as the least sensitive antibiotics for both Gram-positive and Gram-negative ***: These results provided first information on normal conjunctival ocular micro flora and cytological features in Mediterranean buffalo.
