Multiple mating by both sexes is common among sexually reproducing *** hive beetles(SHB),Aethina tumida,are parasites of bee nests endemic to sub-Saharan Africa and have become a widespread invasive *** the considerable economic damages they can cause,their basic biology remains poorly *** we show that male and female small hive beetles can mate multiple times,suggesting that costs for mating are low in this *** an invasive *** population in the United States,a combination of laboratory experiments for males and paternity analysis with eight polymorphic DNA microsatellite markers for field-caught females were used to estimate the number of mating by both *** data show that females and males can mate multiple times—females mated with up to eight males,whereas males mated with at least seven *** results also showed that *** displayed a skewed paternity,although this was not consistent among the tested ***,first or last male advantage seem to be unlikely in *** observations that individuals of both sexes of *** can mate multiple times opens new research avenues for examining drivers of multiple mating and determining the role it may play in promoting biological invasions.

Corticosteroids and immunomodulators have been the mainstay therapies for Crohn’s disease. Corticosteroids are highly effective to control symptoms in the short- term, but they are not effective in maintaining remission, they heal the mucosa in a reduced proportion of cases, and long-time exposure is associated with an increased risk of infections and mortality. Immunomodulators, azathioprine and methotrexate, heal the mucosa in a higher proportion of patients that corticosteroids but their onset of action is slow and they benefit less than half of patients with Crohn’s disease. In the last decade, medical therapy for Crohn’s disease has experienced a remarkable change due to the introduction of biologic therapy, and particularly the use of anti-tumour necrosis factor-alpha agents. Infliximab, adalimumab, and certolizumab pegol have demonstrated efficacy for induction and maintenance of remission in active Crohn’s disease. These agents have raised the bar for what is a suitable symptomatic response in Crohn’s disease and modification of the natural history of the disease has become a major goal in the treatment of Crohn’s disease. There are several data in the literature that suggest that early use of biologic therapy and achievement of mucosal healing contribute to disease course modification. However, many questions on early biological therapy for Crohn’s disease remain still unanswered.

In this paper, simulated and experimental results on the conical tank level control are presented. PI/PID controllers of integer order （IO） as well as of fractional order （FO） are studied and compared. The tuning parameters are obtained first by using root locus （RL） and Ziegler and Nichols methods, for comparison purposes. Next, particle swarm optimization （PSO） is employed to determine the optimal controllers＇ parameters using as fitness function the integral of the absolute value of tracking error （IAE）. From the experimental results it is concluded that PI/FOPI are the controllers presenting the lowest IAE indexes, whereas PID/FOPID controllers present the lowest energy consumption by the control signal.

With the increase of high renewable energy penetration level,a large amount of reserve is required and the reserve resource would become more and more ***,it is urgent to exploit the flexibility as much as possible from the power system to suppress the uncertainty introduced by the renewable energy *** research studies the reserve optimization problem considering the Optimal Transmission Switching（OTS）.OTS incorporates the control of transmission assets into the schedule problem to co-optimize the network topology and the units output power *** research has shown that transmission sw:itching is a meaningful measure to explore the flexibility and reduce the operation ***,only a few research focus on using OTS to improve reserve deployment and increase the utilization of wind power under *** this study,two different stochastic models are proposed to optimize the Spinning Reserve（SR）requirement based on Unit Commitment（UC）model with OTS.a)The OTS actions are incorporated in the UC with a probabilistic SR criterion,and the optimal SR amount is determined by minimizing the total cost where the cost related to the expected load not served（ELNS）is penalized in the objective function.b)A UC problem considering wind uncertainty is combined with OTS to facilitate the available wind power *** amount of SR is calculated according to the largest deviation between the post and pre-contingency generation *** dissertation also analyzes the computational complexity of proposed models and presents new heuristic measures to improve the computation *** heuristic measure recommends a transmission line categorization module for choosing the best switchable lines according to the impact on the total costs associated with switching off a particular line,and another heuristic is used to find the optimal value of the maximum number of switchable lines in each optimization *** case studies i

Symmetry can dramatically reduce the computational cost （running time and memory allocation） of Self-Consistent-Field ab initio calculations for crystalline systems. Crucial for running time is use of symmetry in the evaluation of one- and two-electron integrals, diagonalization of the Fock matrix at selected points in reciprocal space, reconstruction of the density matrix. As regards memory allocation, full square matrices （overlap, Fock and density） in the Atomic Orbital （AO） basis are avoided and a direct transformation from the packed AO to the SACO （Symmetry Adapted Crystalline Orbital） basis is per- formed, so that the largest matrix to be handled has the size of the largest sub-block in the latter basis. We here illustrate the effectiveness of this scheme, following recent advancements in the CRYSTAL code, concerning memory allocation and direct basis set transformation. Quantitative examples are given for large unit cell systems, such as zeolites （all-silica faujasite and silicalite MF1） and garnets （pyrope）. It is shown that the full SCF of 3D systems containing up to 576 atoms and 11136 Atomic Orbitals in the cell can be run with a hybrid functional on a single core PC with 500 MB RAM in about 8 h.

The proposed technique demonstrates a fiber ring resonator interrogated by an optical time domain reflectometer(OTDR),for intensity *** using this methodology,a cavity round trip time of 2.85ms was *** a proof of concept,a long-period grating was inserted in the resonant cavity operating as a curvature sensing device.A novel signal processing approach was outlined,regarding to the logarithmic behavior of the *** analyzing the experimental results,an increase in the measured sensitivities was obtained by increasing applied *** curvatures performed from 1.8 m^(-1) to 4.5 m^(-1),the sensitivity values ranged from 2.94 dB·km^(-1) to 5.15 dB·km^(-1).In its turn,the sensitivities obtained presented a linear behavior when studied as a function of the applied curvature,following a slope of 0.86×10-3 *** advantages of applying this technique were also discussed,demonstrating two similar fiber rings multiplexed in a series of configurations.

Acoustic sensing is nowadays a very demanding field which plays an important role in modern society, with applications spanning from structural health monitoring to medical imaging. Fiber-optics can bring many advantages to this field, and fiber-optic acoustic sensors show already performance levels capable of competing with the standard sensors based on piezoelectric transducers. This review presents the recent advances in the field of fiber-optic dynamic strain sensing, particularly for acoustic detection. Three dominant technologies are identified - fiber Bragg gratings, interferometric Mach-Zehnder, and Fabry-Perot configurations - and their recent developments are summarized.

The genus Sitophilus （Coleoptera： Curculionidae） encompasses species of great economic importance as stored grain pests worldwide. Among these species, the maize and the rice weevils （Sitophilus zeamais and Sitophilus oryzae, respectively） are partic- ularly important in warmer climates. These two weevils exhibit closely morphological and ecological resemblance making difficult their proper identification and recognition of their distribution in grain-producing regions. Both species are recorded in South America and particularly in Brazil, but their respective distribution and prevalence were not yet assessed in the region. Therefore, several insect samples throughout Brazil were collected and subjected to morphological identification using male genitalia and also using molec- ular identification with species-specific primers designed for clear recognition of both the species. The primers were designed for the specific amplification of a gene fragment of the cytochrome oxidase subunit I, which exhibited high specificity during our prelimi- nary experiments with insects from six populations of known species （either S. zeamais or S. oryzae）. Both identification strategies provided the same results indicating preva- lence of the maize weevil S. zeamais throughout the country. Two hypotheses may explain such prevalence：（i） the likely host preference ofS. zeamais for maize because this is the most cultivated cereal in Brazil, and （ii） the prevalence ofS. zeamais in tropical regions as compared with S. oryzae, which is more disseminated in subtropical and temperate regions.

Hepatitis C virus(HCV) affects about 3% of the world'spopulation, with the highest prevalence in individuals under 40. The prevalence in pregnant women varies with geographical distribution(highest in developing countries). Prevalence also increases in sub-populations of women at high risk for blood-transmitted infections. HCV infection in pregnancy represents a non-negligible problem. However, most of the past antiviral regimens cannot be routinely offered to pregnant or breastfeeding women because of their side effects. We briefly reviewed the issue of treatment of HCV infection in pregnant/breastfeeding women focusing on the effects of the new direct-acting antivirals on fertility, pregnancy and lactation in animal studies and on the potential risk for humans based on the pharmacokinetic properties of each drug. Currently, all new therapy regimens are contraindicated in this setting because of lack of sufficient safety information and adequate measures of contraception are still routinely recommended for female patients of childbearing potential.
