Sarcopenia in patients with colorectal cancer:A comprehensive review

Probiotics against neoplastic transformation of gastric mucosa:Effects on cell proliferation and polyamine metabolism

Gastric cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide, accounting for about 10% of newly diagnosed neoplasms. In the last decades, an emerging role has been attributed to the relations between the intestinal microbiota and the onset of both gastrointestinal and non-gastrointestinal neoplasms. Thus, exogenous microbial administration of peculiar bacterial strains(probiotics) has been suggested as having a profound influence on multiple processes associated with a change in cancer risk. The internationally accepted definition of probiotics is live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit on the host. The possible effects on the gastrointestinal tract following probiotic administration have been investigated in vitro and in animal models, as well as in healthy volunteers and in patients suffering from different human gastrointestinal diseases. Although several evidences are available on the use of probiotics against the carcinogen Helicobacter pylori,little is still known about the potential cross-interactions among probiotics, the composition and quality of intestinal flora and the neoplastic transformation of gastric mucosa. In this connection, a significant role in cell proliferation is played by polyamines(putrescine, spermidine, and spermine). These small amines are required in both pre-neoplastic and neoplastic tissue to sustain the cell growth and the evidences here provided suggest that probiotics may act as antineoplastic agents in the stomach by affecting also the polyamine content and functions. This review will summarize data on the most widely recognized effects of probiotics against neoplastic transformation of gastric mucosa and in particular on their ability in modulating cell proliferation, paying attention to the polyamine metabolism.

Nowadays, mixed liver tumors are more frequently diagnosed due to better imaging, advanced immunohistochemistry (IHC) staining techniques and better knowledge of hepatic tumorigene- sis [1–3] . Such tumors represent a mosaic of components with dis- tinct histogenesis and carcinogenic pathways. As their occurrence in the liver is very rare, their behavior and natural history are difficult to determine, and their management remains empirical. An uncommon case of a composite tumor harboring hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and hepatic hemangiosarcoma (HHS) components in a liver transplant (LT) recipient is reported herein.

Dimensions of hepatocellular carcinoma phenotypic diversity

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is the 3^(rd) leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. More than 80% of HCCs arise within chronic liver disease resulting from viral hepatitis, alcohol, hemochromatosis, obesity and metabolic syndrome or genotoxins. Projections based on Western lifestyle and its metabolic consequences anticipate a further increase in incidence, despite recent breakthroughs in the management of viral hepatitis. HCCs display high heterogeneity of molecular phenotypes, which challenges clinical management. However, emerging molecular classifications of HCCs have not yet formed a unified corpus translatable to the clinical practice. Thus, patient management is currently based upon tumor number, size, vascular invasion, performance status and functional liver reserve. Nonetheless, an impressive body of molecular evidence emerged within the last 20 years and is becoming increasingly available to medical practitioners and researchers in the form of repositories. Therefore, the aim this work is to review molecular data underlying HCC classifications and to organize this corpus into the major dimensions explaining HCC phenotypic diversity. Major efforts have been recently made worldwide toward a unifying "clinically-friendly" molecular landscape. As a result, a consensus emerges on three major dimensions explaining the HCC heterogeneity. In the first dimension, tumor cell proliferation and differentiation enabled allocation of HCCs to two major classes presenting profoundly different clinical aggressiveness. In the second dimension, HCC microenvironment and tumor immunity underlie recent therapeutic breakthroughs prolonging patients' survival. In the third dimension,metabolic reprogramming, with the recent emergence of subclass-specific metabolic profiles, may lead to adaptive and combined therapeutic approaches. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a late-onset neurodegenerative disease selectively affecting motor neurons, leading to pro-gressive paralysis. Although most cases are sporadic,-10% are familial. Similar proteins are found in aggregates in sporadicand familial ALS, and over the last decade, research has been focused on the underlying nature of this common ***, TDP-43 inclusions are found in almost all ALS patients, while Fus inclusions have been reported in some familial ALSpatients. Both TDP-43 and FUS possess ‘low-complexity domains' (LCDs) and are considered as ‘intrinsically disordered proteins',which form liquid droplets in vitro due to the weak interactions caused by the LCDs. Dysfunctional ‘liquid-lquid phase separa-tion'(LLPS) emerged as a new mechanism linking AlS-related proteins to pathogenesis. Here, we review the current state ofknowledge on ALS-related gene products associated with a proteinopathy and discuss their status as lLPS proteins. n addition,we highlight the therapeutic potential of targeting LLPS for treating ALS.

Artificial intelligence and remote sensing for spatial prediction of daily air temperature:case study of Souss watershed of Morocco

Air temperature(Tair)is a fundamental variable in climate research and climate impact *** field observations do not accurately capture its spatial distribution due to the sparse and uneven distribution of weather stations,especially in remote areas where the local variability is *** circumvent this problem,in this study,remote sensing and weather station data were used to estimate Tair in the Souss watershed in *** statistical methods,including linear regression and partial least squares(PLS),and four machine learning algorithms,namely k-nearest neighbors,random forest(RF),extreme gradient boost,and Cubist,were used for modeling and predicting Tair and its performance were evaluated using random subsets and *** resolution imaging spectroradiometer predictors,including Terra band 32 emissivity,Terra nighttime land surface temperature,Terra local time of night observation,Aqua band 31 emissivity,Aqua daytime land surface tempera-ture,and Aqua nighttime land surface temperature(ALSTN),and auxiliary inputs,including sky-view,elevation,slope,and hillshade,were used as inputs for *** results showed that the Cubist and RF were the most accurate models(RMSE=2.09°C and 2.13°C,R2=0.91 and 0.90,respectively),while PLS had the lowest predictive power(RMSE=2.71°C;R2=0.83).The overall performance of the models for estimating Tair in the study area was generally satisfac-tory,with RMSE limited to less than 3°C for all ***,the station data reliability was still an issue,with only four of the seven stations marked by complete meteorological data.

This article has the objective of presenting our method to develop and test a motion control system for a heavy-duty hydraulically actuated manipulator,which is part of a newly developed prototype featuring a fully-autonomous unmanned forestry *** control algorithm is based on functional analysis and differential algebra,under the concepts of a new type of approach known as model-free intelligent PID control(iPID).As it can be unsafe to test this form of control directly on real hardware,our main contribution is to introduce a framework for developing and testing control *** framework incorporates a desktop-size mockup crane equipped with comparable hardware as the real one,which we design and manufactured using *** downscaled mechatronic system allows to safely test the implementation of control software in real-time hardware directly on our desks,prior to the actual testing on the real *** results demonstrate that this development framework is useful to safely test control software for heavy-duty systems,and it helped us present the first experiments with the world’s first unmanned forestry machine capable of performing fully autonomous forestry tasks.

Event-triggered leader-following formation control for multi-agent systems under communication faults: application to a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles

The main contribution of this paper is the design of an event-triggered formation control for leader-following consensus in second-order multi-agent systems(MASs)under communication *** the agents must follow the trajectories of a virtual leader despite communication faults considered as smooth time-varying delays dependent on the distance between the *** matrix inequalities(LMIs)-based conditions are obtained to synthesize a controller gain that guarantees stability of the synchronization *** on the closed-loop system,an event-triggered mechanism is designed to reduce the control law update and information exchange in order to reduce energy *** proposed approach is implemented in a real platform of a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs)under communication faults.A comparison between a state-of-the-art technique and the proposed technique has been provided,demonstrating the performance improvement brought by the proposed approach.
