Use of albendazole sulfoxide, albendazole sulfone, and combined solutions as scolicidal agents on hydatid cysts (in vitro study)

AIM： TO establish which scolicidal agents are superior and more suitable for regular use. METHODS： Echinococcus granu/osus protoscoleces were obtained from 25 patients with liver hydatid cysts. Various concentrations of albendazole sulfone, albendazole sulfoxide, and albendazole sulfone and albendazole sulfoxide mixed together in concentrations of 50 μg/mL, and H202 in a concentration of 4%, NaCI 20%, and 1.5% cetrimide-0.15% chlorhexidine （10% Savlon-Turkey） were used to determine the scolicidal effects. Albendazole （ABZ） derivatives and other scolicidal agents were applied to a minimum of 100 scoleces for 5 and 10 min. The degree of viability was calculated according to the number of living scolices per field from a total of 100 scolices observed under the microscope. RESULTS： After 5 min, ABZ sulfone was 97.3% effective, ABZ sulfoxide was 98.4% effective, and the combined solution was 98.6% effective. When sulfone, sulfoxide and the combined solutions were compared, the combined solution seemed more effective than sulfone. However, there was no difference when the combined solution was compared with sulfoxide. After 10 min, hypertonic salt water, sulfone, sulfoxide, and the combined solution compared to other solutions looked more effective and this was statistically significant on an advanced level. When sulfone, sulfoxide, and the combined solutions were compared with each other, the combined solution appeared more effective than sulfone. When the combined solution was compared with sulfoxide, there was no difference. CONCLUSION： Despite being active, ABZ metabolites did not provide a marked advantage over 20% hypertonic saline. According to these results, we think creating a newly improved and more active preparation is necessary for hydatid cyst treatment.

Online computation of International Reference Ionosphere Extended to Plasmasphere(IRI-Plas) model for space weather

Ionosphere is the most challenging part of Space Weather with its spatio-temporal variability and dispersive nature. Ionospheric models are very important in reducing positioning error in GNSS *** Reference Ionosphere(IRI) is an empirical, deterministic and climatic model of ionosphere up to 2000 km in height. Recently, IRI Extended to Plasmasphere(IRI-Plas) model has been developed to extend the interest region of IRI to the GPS orbital height of 20,000 km. Both IRI and IRI-Plas provide ionospheric parameters such as electron density, electron and ion temperatures according to their height profiles. In order to update the model to current ionospheric conditions, IRI-Plas can input F2 layer critical frequency(foF2), maximum ionization height(hmF2), and also Total Electron Content(TEC).Online IRI-Plas is developed for the ionospheric community to run multiple tasks at various locations,dates and times with optional foF2, hmF2 and TEC inputs in a user-friendly manner. In this paper, we are going to present the capabilities of the Online IRI-Plas service and provide some comparisons between IRI-Plas outputs and ionosonde measurements. The comparison between online IRI-Plas foF2 outputs and ionosonde foF2 measurements indicates that the model with TEC input can significantly improve the representation of the current ionospheric state, which is very successful especially in the geomagnetically disturbed days.

Effect of silicone oil removal on central corneal thickness

AIM:To evaluate the effect of silicone oil removal(SOR) on central corneal thickness(CCT) in aphakic and pseudophakic eyes prospectively.· METHODS:Patients who underwent SOR surgery between June 2005-August 2007 were included in this *** oil was actively removed behind the posterior capsule through the pars plana sclerotomy site(posterior approach) in pseudophakic eyes and through the pupil and the corneal tunnel incision(anterior approach) in aphakic eyes with the 18-gauge *** was assessed with Orbscan II corneal topography system preoperatively and at one month and three months postoperatively.A total of 34 eyes of 34 patients(26 males,8 females) comprised the study *** age was(55.6±12.3) years(Range:25-80 years).Twenty-six eyes(76.5%) were pseudophakic and 8(23.5%) *** time between silicone oil injection and removal was(15.1±13.6) months(Range:5-54 months).At baseline,CCT was 576.4±46.0μm in pseudophakic eyes and 611.6±36.2μm in aphakic eyes.· RESULTS:At the first postoperative month CCT was(573.3±40.1)μm and(630.9±72.9)μm in pseudophakic and aphakic eyes *** the third postoperative month,CCT was(582.7±49.5)μm and(614.5±82.4)μm in pseudophakic and aphakic eyes *** was no statistically significant difference in CCT measurements one month and 3 months after SOR when compared to preoperative values in both aphakic and pseudophakic eyes(P> 0.05).· CONCLUSION:Active SOR either by anterior or posterior approach did not affect the CCT.·

Performance Comparison of Photovoltaic Modules under Low Sunlight

The DC energy produced by photovoltaic （PV） modules can change depending on the cell type, module components and module technology. The cell efficiency, sensitivity of the cell to light, recombination losses and how much the light reflects within the cell will affect the amount of produced energy. In addition, the energy produced will change depending on what wavelength light and how much can be transmitted through the front glass and encapsulant and how much light is reflected from back encapsulant and back cover. The front glass transmissivity, patterned surface and existence of ARC （anti-reflective coating） are all very important. In this research project, 14 modules were tested： 4 modules Glass/Glass （Perc Mono Cell）, 4 modules Glass/Ceramic （Perc Mono Cell）, 2 modules Glass/Glass bifacial （HIT Cell）, 1 module Standard （Framed, Mono-n type Cell）, 2 modules Standard （Framed, Poly Cell）, 1 module Standard （Framed, Perc Mono Cell）. This paper compares the normalized Wh/Wp ratios of the different modules under low irradiance （morning and afternoon light） and analyzes and investigates the obtained results as per the cell type used, module components and module technology.

A Review： Investigation of Bioplastics

Because of increasing environmental concerns/legislative pressure for plastics waste and rapid increases in the cost of petroleum, the development of ＂environmental friendly＂ materials has attracted extensive interest. Recently, bioplastics are one of the most innovative environmental friendly materials developed. Therefore, this paper will look at aspects of the bioplastics from the perspective of sustainability, advantages/disadvantages and standards. The global bioplastics market is thought to be growing at a rate of 20%-25% per year. They have some advantages such as lower carbon footprint, independence, energy efficiency, and eco-safety. However, they have some disadvantages such as high cost, recycling, reducing raw materials, misused of terms and lack of legislation. For the sustainability, recycling systems and production technology may be developed for bioplastics and by-product should be used for their production. Also, there is much standardization about them. It is important to have comparable international standard methods. Therefore, there is an urgent need to standardize all details. A new guide and standard for just bioplastics should be developed for production, usage and bioplastic waste management for every country in the world.

Numerical Simulation of the Flow around Two-dimensional Partially Cavitating Hydrofoils

In the present study, a new approach is applied to the cavity prediction for two-dimensional （2D） hydrofoils by the potential based boundary element method （BEM）. The boundary element method is treated with the source and doublet distributions on the panel surface and cavity surface by usethe of the Dirichlet type boundary conditions. An iterative solution approach is used to determine the cavity shape on partially cavitating hydrofoils. In the case of a specified cavitation number and cavity length, the iterative solution method proceeds by addition or subtraction of a displacement thickness on the cavity surface of the hydrofoil. The appropriate cavity shape is obtained by the dynamic boundary condition of the cavity surface and the kinematic boundary condition of the whole foil surface including the cavity. For a given cavitation number the cavity length of the 2D hydrofoil is determined according to the minimum error criterion among different cavity lengths, which satisfies the dynamic boundary condition on the cavity surface. The NACA 16006, NACA 16012 and NACA 16015 hydrofoil sections are investigated for two angles of attack. The results are compared with other potential based boundary element codes, the PCPAN and a commercial CFD code （FLUENT）. Consequently, it has been shown that the results obtained from the two dimensional approach are consistent with those obtained from the others.

Melatonin is a versatile indolamine synthesized and secreted by the pineal gland in response to the photoperiodic information received by the retinohypothalamic signaling *** has many benefits,such as organizing circadian rhythms and acting as a powerful *** aimed to show the antitumor effects of melatonin in both in vivo and in vitro models through the mammalian target of rapamycin(mTOR)signaling pathway and the Argyrophilic Nucleolar Regulatory Region(AgNOR),using the Microcomputed Tomography(Micro CT).Ehrlich ascites carcinoma(EAC)cells were administered into the mice by subcutaneous *** with solid tumors were injected intraperitoneally with 50 and 100 mg/kg melatonin for 14 *** measurements for the taken tumors were made with micro-CT imaging,immunohistochemistry(IHC),real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR)and ***,the tumor tissue volume in the Tumor+100 mg/kg melatonin group was significantly lower than that in the other groups in the data obtained from micro-CT *** the IHC analysis,the groups treated with Tumor+100 mg/kg melatonin were compared when the mTOR signaling pathway and factor 8(F8)expression were compared with the control *** was determined that there was a significant decrease(p<0.05).Significant differences were found in the total AgNOR area/nuclear area(TAA/NA)ratio in the treatment groups(p<0.05).Furthermore,there were significant differences between the amount of mTOR mRNA for the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K),AKT Serine/Threonine Kinase(PKB/AKT)genes(p<0.05).Cell apoptosis was evaluated with Annexin V in an in vitro study with different doses of melatonin;It was observed that 100µg/mL melatonin dose caused an increase in the apoptotic cell *** this study,we have reported anti-tumor effects of melatonin in cell culture studies as well as in mice *** characterization of the melatonin-mediated cancer inhibitory effects will be valuable in advanc

The Prevalence of Celiac Disease in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus

AIM: To determine the prevalence of celiac disease related autoantibodies in patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and to compare these results with the general population. METHODS: In total, 137 consecutive patients with type 1 DM, 172 with type 2 DM and 113 age-sex matched control subjects were included into the study. Antigliadin-autoantibodies (AGA) IgG and IgA, and endomysial-antibodies(EMA) IgG and IgA antibodies were determined. Patients who were positive for one or more were offered a gastroduodenoscopic examination. RESULTS: AGA IgG positivity was detected in 38.7% (53/137) patients with type 1 DM in 26.2% (45/172) patients with type 2 DM and in 16.8% (19/113) control subjects (significant differences). AGA IgA positivity was detected in 24.8% (34/137) patients with type 1 DM, in 9.3% (16/172) patients with type 2 DM and in 3.5% (4/113) control subjects (significant differences). EMA IgG positivity was detected in 10.2% (14/137) patients with type 1 DM in 0.6% (1/176) patients with type 2 DM and 0.9% (1/113) control subjects (significant differences). EMA IgA positivity was detected in 11.7% (16/137) patients with type 1 DM in 0.6% (1/172) patients with type 2 DM and in none of control subjects. EMA IgA positivity was sig- nificantly higher in patients with type 1 DM as compared with patients with type 2 DM and controls. CONCLUSION: High prevalence of celiac disease at the diagnosis of type 1 DM is observed. Serological markers are useful for identifying celiac disease patients with type 1 DM.

Acceleration of coxarthrosis by an exostosis causing femoroacetabular impingement

Here we describe a 28-year-old man with a history of right hip pain for the past 11 years and ankylosing spondylitis for the past 6 months. Imaging studies showed an exostosis in the femoral neck causing femoroacetabular imping- ement. The patient was diagnosed with coxar- throsis. This case report suggests that femoro- acetabular impingement may accelerate the degenerative process in the hip joint.
