The effect of acupuncture on mood and working memory in patients with depression and schizophrenia

BACKGROUND： In patients with depression, as well as in patients with schizophrenia, both mood and working memory performance are often impaired. Both issues can only be addressed and improved with medication to some extent. OBJECTIVE： This study investigates the mood and the working memory performance in patients with depression or schizophrenia and whether acupuncture can improve these. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTIONS： A pragmatic clinical trial design was used The study was conducted in a psychiatric clinic. Fifty patients with depression and 50 with schizophrenia were randomly divided into an experimental and a waiting-list group. Additionally, 25 healthy control participants were included. Twelve weeks of individualized acupuncture treatment was used as the clinical intervention. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： All patients were tested before （T1） and after （T2） acupuncture treatment on a mood scale （Beck Depression Inventory-II, BDI-II）, a simple working memory task （digit span）, and a complex working memory task （letter-number sequencing）; the healthy controls were tested at T1 only. RESULTS： Patients with depression scored worse than the others on the BDI-II, and patients with schizophrenia scored worse than the healthy controls. On the digit span, patients with schizophrenia did not differ from healthy controls whereas they scored worse of all on the letter-number sequencing. With respect to the acupuncture findings, first, the present study showed that the use of acupuncture to treat patients with schizophrenia was both practical and safe. Moreover, acupuncture had a positive effect on the BDI-II for the depression group, but acupuncture had no effect on the digit span and on the letter- number sequencing performance for the two clinical groups. Multiple sclerosis （MS） is a chronic demyelinating disease of the central nervous system. Although the exact underlying mechanism leading to myelin destruction is unknown, the molecular mimicry theory is the most commonly acknowledged elucidation of MS pathology. Although various antigens have been associated with MS induction, this review presents studies focused on key bacterial and viral antigens that lead to the development of MS. The research specific to a molecular mimicry theory of MS via each implicated agent is weak; however, collectively the reports provide credible support for this theory. Given that homologous sequences are not required to lead to antigenic cross-reactivity, it is reasonable to conclude that certain viral and bacterial antigens with 5-10 similar amino acids in sequence can lead to self destruction of similar myelin sequences. Thus, this literature review has provided insight to further the understanding of the etiology of multiple sclerosis.

GeoQuest Project Computer Class Role Playing Game as Innovative Teaching Methodology to Foster STEAM Education

GeoQuest Project is the design of a new teaching and learning technology based on Computer Class Role Playing Games （RPG） to teach Earth Science in a STEAM educational approach. It ensures interdisciplinarity, multilinguai approach （CLIL compliance） and interactive activities in classrooms. This educational game uses students＇ personal tablets and smartphones to interact with the game, with a system more comprehensible and funny for young people compared to traditional methodologies. Students are bringing ＂in situation＂ by the adventure, so teachers can get a rigorous assessment of their skills. The Game includes several adventure paths, suitable for different age students. They are focused on scientific topics, humanities, hands-on activities in interdisciplinary way. If used conditions do not allow practical or laboratorial activities provided by the game, players can see some videos to understand the activities. Experimental results were outstanding： the RPG appreciation is in agreement with the experiments outcome. This work experience gets excellent feedbacks by teachers, in terms of efficacy of this new teaching methodology and of results achieving.

＂Learning on Gaming＂ Improves Science Learning in a STEAM Interdisciplinary Approach

The ＂Gaming to Learn＂ consists in playing a game and consequently getting a learning goal： play a game, even not specifically didactic to derive a learning outcome. The ＂Game-Based Learning＂ consists of tips, techniques and tools that apply the principles of game design to the learning process-a dynamic way to engage learners and help educators assess learning. The authors＇ approach ＂Learning on Gaming＂ is different： you learn ＂while＂ you play. To apply this concept, the authors realize GeoQuest, a Computer Class Role Playing Game to teach Earth Science in an STEAM （Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math） educational approach. The authors have realised a role playing computer game called GeoQuest creating at the same time a Role Playing Engine which involves all students to the game through their personal mobiles or tablets, giving a total interaction of the whole class to the game. Players can also discover where they are from the story of some historical and mythological figures they meet on their path. They can interact to solve several quests appearing during the game related to mineralogy, volcanology, geodynamics, history, myths.

目的:通过对人脐静脉内皮细胞腺苷分泌进行定性及定量研究,了解人类血管内皮细胞的腺苷代谢及机制。方法:收集并测定不同干预下细胞柱流出液中分离的人脐静脉内皮细胞分泌的腺苷量。结果:在无干预、抑制腺苷激酶及去氨酶、抑制细胞膜腺苷转运情况下,人脐静脉内皮细胞腺苷分泌率分别为13.5±7.1 ***?-1、32.5±14.2 ***-1和20.8±15.7 ***-1。结论:人类血管内皮细胞内腺苷合成高于胞外,而细胞膜腺苷转运被抑制后的腺苷分泌率反而高于生理状态下分泌率,则表明腺苷在胞内分解代谢非常迅速,使部分腺苷反由胞外扩散入胞内。

本文采用Alkireand Foster于2007年开发的多维贫困测量方法,利用2006年中国健康与营养调查数据,对中国城市和农村家庭多维贫困进行了测量。测量结果表明,中国城市和农村家庭都存在收入之外的多维贫困,城市和农村近1/5的家庭存在收入之外任意3个维度的贫困。中国城市和农村的贫困状况远远高于国家统计局以收入为标准测量的贫困发生率。维度分解结果表明,卫生设施、健康保险和教育对多维贫困指数的贡献最大。对样本地区的分解结果表明,贵州省多维贫困指数最高。城乡分解结果表明,黑龙江和广西的城市多维贫困比较突出。因此,中国下一个十年(2011～2020年)扶贫开发纲要应从多维度识别和瞄准贫困。

Revaluation of clinical and histological criteria for diagnosis of dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome

AIM： To re-evaluate the diagnostic criteria of insulin resistance hepatic iron overload based on clinical, biochemical and histopathological findings. METHODS： We studied 81 patients with hepatic iron overload not explained by known genetic and acquired causes. The metabolic syndrome （MS） was defined according to ATPⅢ criteria. Iron overload was assessed by liver biopsy. Liver histology was evaluated by Ishak＇s score and iron accumulation by Deugnier＇s score; steatosis was diagnosed when present in ≥ 5% of hepatooltes. RESULTS： According to transferrin saturation levels, we observed significant differences in the amount of hepatic iron overload and iron distribution, as well as the number of metabolic abnormalities. Using Receiving Operating Curve analysis, we found that the presence of two components of the MS differentiated two groups with a statistically significant different hepatic iron overload （P 〈 0.0001）. Patients with ≥2 metabolic alterations and steatosis had lower amount of hepatic iron, lower transferrin saturation and higher sinusoidal iron than patients with 〈 2 MS components and absence of steatosis. CONCLUSION： In our patients, the presence of ≥ 2 alterations of the MS and hepatic steatosis was associated with a moderate form of iron overload with a prevalent sinusoidal distribution and a normal transferrin saturation, suggesting the existence of a peculiar pathogenetic mechanism of iron accumulation. These patients may have the typical dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome. By contrast, patients with transferrin saturation ≥ 60% had more severe iron overload, few or no metabolic abnormalities and a hemochromatosis-like pattern of iron overload.

The Brazilian state of Acre has an extensive natural reserve of bamboo,making it one of the largest in loco gene *** aim of this study was to characterize the structure and genetic diversity of Guadua weberbaueri *** two populations,one native(FAPB)and the other anthropized(FAPBA),using ISSR *** results show that the FAPB population exhibited higher values for all estimates of population ***,the FAPBA population also showed high heterozygosity,corroborated by estimated gene flow(Nm=3.9)between the *** study of the association between Nei’s genetic distances and the geographic distances between the populations were significantly correlated(r=0.45,p=0.01),corroborated by the dendrogram revealing two distinct groups corresponding to the collection sites,without mixing classes between populations in the same *** for the coancestry coefficient,pairs of individuals in the first distance class were positive and significant,indicating that plants that are geographically closer share common alleles with a frequency greater than by chance,which means that there is a tendency that geographically closer individuals are *** presented similar genetic structure when the geographical distance between them was up to 56 m for FAPB and up to 156 m for *** was concluded that anthropized environments exhibit less genetic diversity than native environments,inferring risks for species conservation if appropriate and planned management techniques are not adopted.

Investigating the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying brain disorders is a priority if novel therapeutic strategies are to be developed. In vivo studies of animal models and in vitro studies of cell lines/primary cell cultures may provide useful tools to study certain aspects of brain disorders. However, discrepancies among these studies or unsuccessful translation from animal/cell studies to human/clinical studies often occur, because these models generally represent only some symptoms of a neuropsychiatric disorder rather than the complete disorder. Human brain slice cultures from postmortem tissue or resected tissue from operations have shown that, in vitro, neurons and glia can stay alive for long periods of time, while their morphological and physiological characteristics, and their ability to respond to experimental manipulations are maintained. Human brain slices can thus provide a close representation of neuronal networks in vivo, be a valuable tool for investigation of the basis of neuropsychiatric disorders, and provide a platform for the evaluation of novel pharmacological treatments of human brain diseases.A brain bank needs to provide the necessary infrastructure to bring together donors, hospitals, and researchers who want to investigate human brain slices in cultures of clinically and neuropathologically well-documented material.
