Genetic Diversity and DNA Barcoding of Yam Accessions from Southern Nigeria

Knowledge of genetic diversity and barcoding of yam is lacking in Enugu and Ebonyi States of southern Nigeria. Therefore, DNA barcoding was used to facilitate identification and biodiversity studies of yam species from Southern Nigeria. Seventy five yam accessions were collected from Enugu and Ebonyi States, including International Institute of Tropical Agriculture for DNA extraction and amplification using a chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rbcL) marker. There was high level of similarity among the accessions and presence of 534 conserved and 7 variable sites. A transversional mutation of G/T at a consensus position of 335 was identified followed by transitions at 362 (A/G), 368 (A/G), 371 (C/T) and 391 (C/T) within the accessions. Phylogeny resolved the yam accessions into ten major groups with their bootstrap values ranging from 0 - 100. Phylogenetic diversity was highest in group X, followed by VII, VI and IX. The inter-group genetic distance based on Kimura 2-parameter model ranged from 0.5000 ± 0.4770 - 5.0560 ± 2.5760, while the intra-group had 0.5250 ± 0.5000 - 2.0103 ± 1.2579. The mean genetic diversity within the entire population was 0.7970 ± 0.06910. BLAST analysis of total bit score, query coverage, and percentage identity were in the ranges of 411 - 1011, 99% - 100% and 97% - 100%, respectively. However, the rbcL could not resolve the yam accessions well following the comparative assessment of some discrepancies in the detected number of species from phylogenetic groupings, genetic diversity indices and NCBI BLAST hits, thereby, exposing the inefficiency of this marker in discriminating the yam accessions. 针对当代对高等教育的学习需求,联邦政府推出了一个综合的框架体系。关于尼日利亚在能力本位教育方面,大多数的研究主要涉及创业教育及其对学生学术能力方面的影响,从那些研究来看,学术能力并没有改变。本研究以尼日利亚东南部的两所大学为研究对象,以硕士研究生(学术)意向为中介,研究学术态度以及督导风格感知对学术能力上的影响。为检验所提出的研究模型,论文采用纸质调查的方式进行定量横向比较研究,共计350个可用数据,调查响应率达87.5%。数据分析采用描述性统计、曼-惠特尼U检验、克鲁斯拉沃利斯检验、皮尔逊积矩相关性、多元线性回归和结构方程建模(SEM),使用SPSS和AMOS软件。多元回归结果表明,学术态度、督导风格感知对学生的学术能力有显著贡献,但就学生在提高能力而言,在学术态度和导师的指导风格中,受导师督导风格的影响是最有力的因素。在本研究中,学生意向对学术能力的提升起一定中介作用,而且学生对学术能力的态度似乎因性别而异,学业能力则基于年龄、专业和父母收入而异。总而言之,在尼日利亚大一至大三高等教育背景下,研究结果揭示了学生学术态度、督导风格感知和学生意向对其学术能力发展的重要性。其结果对政府和政策制定者、大学,以及对未来政策和实践研究具有实际意义。

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Plasmodium species are the causative agents of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and malaria respectively with similar clinical presentations. The objective of this study is to determine the burden of co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and malaria in the general population. Five (5 mLs) of blood samples were collected for SARS-CoV-2 and malaria parasite test. The malaria test was performed using a commercially available one-step malaria antigen Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (Pf HRP-II) rapid test kit. The results of the study showed that the participants that were coinfected with SARS-CoV-2 IgG and malaria were 13 (2.5%) in Lagos, 1114 (39.1%) in Delta and 49 (2.3%) in Sokoto States. The prevalence of coinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and malaria in urban areas in Lagos, Delta and Sokoto States were 7 (2.2%), 1373 (48.1%), and 5 (0.2%) respectively. In rural areas, the prevalence of coinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and malaria in Lagos, Delta and Sokoto States were 6 (0.3%), 365 (12.8%), and 44 (2.1%) respectively in this study. This suggests that participants in the urban areas were more prone to co-infections than the rural areas in Lagos and Delta states, while it was otherwise in Sokoto State. In conclusion, the co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and malaria was very high in Delta State compared to the other States. It is important for clinics to screen for both diseases when patients present with symptoms of malaria. This is because the infections have similar symptoms and the public is quick to assume malaria infection without diagnosing for COVID-19 and vice versa.

Analysis of Childhood Obesity in Alabama and Delaware: A Cohort Study

Objective: The objective is to evaluate data sets for children aged 24 to 59 months that identified the risk factors of being obese and overweight and compare it between two U.S. states (Alabama and Delaware). Methods: An analysis of survey data sets published between 2013 and 2017, comparing the factors of obesity and its prevalence amongst different races of 50,760 children aged 24 to 59 months in the U.S., was conducted using Microsoft Excel 2016 and IBM SPSS version 1.0.0. Results: Hispanic children have the highest rate of obesity in the U.S compared to all other races. Children aged 2 - 4 years old from Alabama were more at risk for being overweight and obese compared to those from Delaware. Those between the ages of 48 - 59 months of age were more at risk than the other age groups. Conclusions: Childhood obesity is a predisposing factor for adult obesity. There is a need to identify the risk factors of obesity early in a person’s life and address them appropriately.

DNA Barcoding of Nigeria’s Forest Species Listed in CITES and Other Endangered Plant Species of National Interest

Illegal trade is considered one of the greatest threats to the loss of biodiversity of endangered plants. Some of these plant species are often trafficked in processed forms, making it extremely difficult for taxonomic experts to identify them. In the past, illegal traders of endangered species have been arrested and prosecuted but eventually cleared due to a lack of conclusive evidence. DNA barcoding is a veritable tool to protect these endangered species from illegal trade. It identifies all stages of the species’ life forms including processed products (milled or powdered animal and plant parts). The study utilised the rbcL gene as a single barcode region in the identification/authentication of 19 Nigeria’s endangered forest species legislated under the CITES and other endangered species of national interest. The generated sequence barcodes were used to query NCBI-GenBank and BOLD databases. 57.89% of the samples were identified down to species level and 42.11% to genus level. Amongst the 19 samples, sample (S7) yielded a high-quality sequence for a single sequencing read (forward), sufficient to identify the sample with a 99.81% identity match on NCBI-GenBank and BOLD. The results reveal that the rbcL single barcode efficiently identified most of the sampled plants;this supports the potential utilisation of DNA barcoding in the accurate detection and conservation of CITES-listed plants in Nigeria. The study documented the CITES-listed plants and other essential plants endangered or threatened plants in Nigeria and provided the first chloroplast DNA reference dataset to support the utilisation of DNA barcoding to identify CITES-listed plant species in Nigeria, which is significant for future studies.

在汉语国际推广和中非合作战略的大背景下,越来越多的尼日利亚学生来到中国留学,但他们在中国文化环境下面临着诸多困难,文化差异和个人适应的问题成为影响在华尼日利业学生语言习得和学习生活的重要问题,探讨解决跨文化交际困难的对策也成为日益紧迫的问题。本文重点考察在中国大学学习的尼日利亚人跨文化交际能力,通过文献梳理和实际的调查研究,寻找阻碍他们顺利融入中国社会的原因,调查他们和中国人的交流频率和方式、他们所遇到的困难、探讨为什么他们会遇到这类的困难,以及他们的应对方式。研究结果表明,大部分的尼日利亚学生缺乏留学目的国家的社会文化知识,他们在社会、教育和文化适应方面都存在问题,而这归因于缺少跨文化交际的知识,以及两国之间在文化背景、种族特性、宗教信仰以及价值观等方面的差异。根据调研分析的结果,本文认为应该针对尼日利亚学生展开相应的留学行前培训,在课堂内外都提供必要的目的国中国文化国情教育;在尼日利亚的孔子学院作为主要的生源选拔地,不仅要扩大规模来适应日益增长的汉语学习人群,同时还应该在语言学习中加入跨文化交流的学习,引进多元文化课程;更关键的是学员自身应当建立起跨文化交际的意识,通过知识和实践的储备来提高沟通技巧。

因果连词在汉语中占有非常重要的地位。对尼日利亚的汉语学习者来说,要理解、掌握和使用这类词语的难度也比较大。目前,学术上已经有不少与连词相关的研究,但是针对尼日利亚学生习得因果连词的研究却很少。本文以纳姆迪·阿齐克韦大学、奥科联邦理工学院和拉各斯孔子学院的学生为调查对象,对表示因果关系的一组连词进行分析,旨在总结尼日利亚学生习得汉语因果连接词时出现的偏误类型,分析这些偏误产生的原因,最后,根据分析结果,提出了功能性、趣味性和知识性的因果连词教学策略。本文主要有五章:第一章绪论。主要介绍本文的研究背景,选题缘由及意义,并对前人研究成果做了一个综述,确定研究方法、研究对象以及研究的理论基础等。本文第二章着重分析尼日利亚学习者在习得汉语因果连接词时的常见错误,进一步明确关键概念,并对汉语因果连词进行详细的定义和分类,归纳得出研究样本存在错误的类型。这些错误包括:遗漏、误加、误代、错序和重复五种类型。尼日利亚学生通常会把语义上相似的词语混用,因此偏误最高的有误代。在对每一类偏误进行分析时,笔者提供了学生的偏误实例。第三章对尼日利亚学习者产生偏误的原因进行了深入分析。笔者从不同角度分析偏误的成因,包括学生自身因素的影响、教材的影响、环境的影响等原因。通过对错误原因的清晰了解,才能找到行之有效的解决方案。第四章是针对尼日利亚学生避免因果连接词的错误提出的一些有效的建议和策略。针对上一章中提出的偏误成因,笔者提出切合尼日利亚学生实际的、有针对性的建议。这些建议包括对教学方法的选择、学习策略的正确运用、教材的编写、课堂实施的管理等方面。笔者认为教师可以多给学生安排教学的活动、更丰富的课堂练习、从学生的汉语水平能力设计有针对性的学习工具等。第五章是结论,总结论文的主要内容,研究成果和不足,为未来研究的完善做好准备。

学习动机是影响第二语言学习效果的重要情感因素,它为学习者提供开始学习的动力,并鼓励学习者向着学习目标不断努力、不断进步。深入了解尼日利亚汉语学习者的普遍学习动机,有助于制定符合尼日利亚地域特色的教学计划,提高尼日利亚汉语学习者的学习效果,促进尼日利亚汉语教学事业的发展。本课题研究在借鉴国内外相关研究成果的基础之上,主要针对尼日利亚纳姆迪阿齐克韦大学孔子学院汉语学习者学习动机进行分析。首先,结合纳姆迪阿齐克韦大学孔子学院汉语学习者的个人基本情况、汉语学习动机和未来发展意向制定问卷调查,同时为了弥补问卷调查过程中可能存在疏漏的环节进行了一对一的个人访谈。然后对调查数据进行整理分析,根据调查数据和访谈结果总结出尼日利亚汉语学习者学习动机较为突出的三个特点:1.虽然学习汉语的初衷各不相同,但是所有受访者都一致肯定了汉语学习对自身发展的积极作用,并且都肯定了汉语作为一门国际化语言的应用价值。2.大多数受访者都希望能具备基础的交流能力,也非常希望能有机会来中国留学,他们大都希望通过学习汉语获得更好的学习、生活环境。3.所有受访者都认为中文的课程学习是“有获得感”的。在调查过程中也发现了现阶段尼日利亚汉语教学存在一些不足之处,例如学习资料较少、实践机会不多、学习形式较为单一等,这些不足难免会挫伤尼日利亚汉语学习者的内在学习动机,制约着汉语教学事业的进一步发展。最后,根据尼日利亚学生汉语学习特点,从教师、孔子学院和学习者的角度提出了能够保持并激发学习动机和改进学习策略的建议。本课题的研究成果能够为尼日利亚孔子学院未来汉语教学提供一定的参考。
