In astrophysics, the boundary conditions for plasma phenomena are provided by nature and the astronomer faces the problem of understanding them from a variety of observations [Hester J J et al 1996 Astrophys. J. 456 225], on the other hand, in laboratory plasma experiments the electromagnetic boundary conditions become a major problem in the set-up of the machine that produces the plasma, an issue that has to be investigated step by step and to be modified and adapted with great patience, in particular in the case of an innovative plasma confinement experiment. The PROTO-SPHERA machine [Alladio F et al 2006 Nucl. Fusion 46 S613] is a magnetic confinement experiment, that emulates in the laboratory the jet + torus plasma configurations often observed in astrophysics: an inner magnetized jet of plasma centered on the(approximate) axis of symmetry and surrounded by a magnetized plasma torus orthogonal to this jet. The PROTO-SPHERA plasma is simply connected, i.e., no metal current conducting rod is linked to the plasma torus, while instead it is the inner magnetized plasma jet(in the following always called the plasma centerpost) that is linked to the torus. It is mandatory that no spurious plasma current path modifies the optimal shape of the plasma centerpost. Moreover, as the plasma torus is produced and sustained, in absence of any applied inductive electric field, by the inner plasma centerpost through magnetic reconnections [Taylor J B and Turner M F 1989 Nucl.Fusion 29 219], it is required as well that spurious current paths do not surround the torus on its outboard, in order not to lower the efficiency of the magnetic reconnections that maintain the plasma torus at the expense of the plasma centerpost. Boundary conditions have been corrected,up to the point that the first sustainment in steady state has been achieved for the combined plasma.

The advanced and personalised experience that modern cars offer makes them more and more data-hungry.For example,the cabin preferences of the possible drivers must be recorded and associated to some identity,while such data could be exploited to deduce sensitive information about the driver’s health.Therefore,drivers’privacy must be taken seriously,requiring a dedicated risk assessment framework,as presented in this paper through a double assessment combining the asset-oriented ISO approach with the threat-oriented STRIDE approach.The framework is tailored to the level of specific car brand and demonstrated on the ten top-selling brands as well as,due to its innovative character,Tesla.The two approaches yield different,but complementary findings,demonstrating the additional insights gained through their parallel adoption.

Influence of dietary hydrogenated palm oil supplementation on serum biochemistry and progesterone levels in dairy goats

The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of hydrogenated palm oil(HPO)added to a dairy goat diet on serum biochemistry and progesterone levels.Thirty pregnant Cilentana dairy goats were equally divided into 2 groups(control [CTR]and HPO groups).After kidding,concentrated feed for both groups was gradually increased up to 400 g/(animal d).and the HPO group received 50 g/(animal·d)of HPO.Supplementation with HPO significantly increased cholesterol levels(mg/dL, 63.80 vs.54.68 at 30 d.P<0.05;78.20 vs.58.00 at 60 d.P<0.05;83.80 vs.57.83 at 120 d.P<0.01)compared with the CTR group although no significant differences were detected for liver and kidney function indicators.Moreover,other biochemical parameters were not affected by HPO supplementation thus suggesting no change occurred in lipid and protein metabolism.Furthermore,a significant correlation was found between progesterone levels and serum cholesterol(r = 0.65,P≤0.01)although these were not significantly higher in HPO supplemented goats.The dose and time of HPO supplementation appears critical as regards assessing the limits between the risks and benefits of HPO supplementation in dairy goats.At the tested dose.HPO was well tolerated by the animals and may represent a useful tool to increase energy availability during highly demanding periods.

Isogeometric Analysis of Soil Plasticity

In this paper we present numerical simulations of soil plasticity using isogeometric analysis comparing the results to the solutions from conventional finite element method. Isogeometric analysis is a numerical method that uses nonuniform rational B-splines (NURBS) as basis functions instead of the Lagrangian polynomials often used in the finite element method. These functions have a higher-order of continuity, making it possible to represent complex geometries exactly. After a brief outline of the theory behind the isogeometric concept, we give a presentation of the constitutive equations, used to simulate the soil behavior in this work. The paper concludes with numerical examples in two- and three-dimensions, which assess the accuracy of isogeometric analysis for simulations of soil behavior. The numerical examples presented show, that for drained soils, the results from isogeometric analysis are overall in good agreement with the conventional finite element method in two- and three-dimensions. Thus isogeometric analysis is a good alternative to conventional finite element analysis for simulations of soil behavior.

In this letter we present the results regarding the electrical and optical characterization of Geiger mode silicon avalanche photodiodes(GMAP) fabricated by silicon standard planar technology. Low dark count rates,negligible afterpulsing effects,good timing resolution and high quantum detection efficiency in all the visible range have been measured. The very good electro-optical performances of our photodiodes make them attractive for the fabrication of arrays with a large number of GMAP to be used both in the commercial and the scientific fields,as telecommunications and nuclear medical imaging.

The excitation functions of dissipative products have been measured in the reaction 27Al+27Al at incident energies from 114 to 127MeV in steps of 200keV. Detection angles vary continuously from 10.4° to 57.4° in laboratory system. An angular coherent width more than 40° in center of mass is obtained. The results from the analysis of excitation functions with nonself-averaging are characterized by a quasi-periodic long-range energy structure embedded in the disorder Ericson fluctuation.

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess if discrepancy between power-Doppler voiding urosonography (PD-VUS) and voiding cystourethrography (VCUG) affects the management of patients with primary vesicoureteric reflux (VUR). Materials and Methods: Fifty-six children with suspected or known VUR were assessed both by PD-VUS and VCUG. Two independent observers, both pediatric surgeons, each aware of the results of only one imaging modality, advised children’s management according to present care standards. Agreement between diagnostic findings at the two imaging modalities and between therapeutic advice of the two observers was evaluated using κstatistics. Results: PD-VUS diagnosed VUR in 3 patients and 6 ureteral units more than VCUG. VCUG showed VUR in 2 but in no patient more than PD-VUS.ureteral units, Accuracy of PD-VUS compared with VCUG was 92.8%and 94.6%considering ureteral units and patients, respectively. The two observers disagreed about the management of 4 (7%) of 56 cases. Agreement was significant (P < 0.001) both between findings at the two imaging modalities and between management options advised by the two independent observers. Conclusion:Vesicoureteric reflux management based on PD-VUS findings is consistent with a management based on standard VCUG.

Human intravenous immune globulin(IVIg),a purified IgG fraction composed of~60%IgG1 and obtained from the pooled plasma of thousands of donors,is clinically used for a wide range of diseases.The biological actions of IVIg are incompletely understood and have been attributed both to the polyclonal antibodies therein and also to their IgG(IgG)Fc regions.Recently,we demonstrated that multiple therapeutic human IgG1 antibodies suppress angiogenesis in a target-independent manner via FcγRI,a high-affinity receptor for IgG1.Here we show that IVIg possesses similar anti-angiogenic activity and inhibited blood vessel growth in five different mouse models of prevalent human diseases,namely,neovascular age-related macular degeneration,corneal neovascularization,colorectal cancer,fibrosarcoma and peripheral arterial ischemic disease.Angioinhibition was mediated by the Fc region of IVIg,required FcγRI and had similar potency in transgenic mice expressing human FcγRs.Finally,IVIg therapy administered to humans for the treatment of inflammatory or autoimmune diseases reduced kidney and muscle blood vessel densities.These data place IVIg,an agent approved by the US Food and Drug Administration,as a novel angioinhibitory drug in doses that are currently administered in the clinical setting.In addition,they raise the possibility of an unintended effect of IVIg on blood vessels.
