Introduction: Hyponatremia is the commonest electrolyte derangement seen in medical and surgical wards and in high dependency treatment units. It is associated with prolonged hospital stay, high economic burden and increased morbidity and mortality. Hyponatremia is well reported in medical and surgical conditions but literature is scanty concerning its relationship with treatment outcome in patients managed in high dependency heart and vascular surgical centers. Objectives: To determine the prevalence, determinants, clinical correlates and outcome of.pre-operative hyponatremia. Methods: Retrospective study involving patients that had surgery (cardiac and vascular) between January 2015 and December 2019. Data were obtained f.om patients’ case f.les, perioperative and intensive unit charts. All participants with preoperative hyponatremia had their serum sodium corrected to ≥135 mmol bef.re surgical incision and those with hypernatremia had their sodium corrected to f.ndings were entered. Statistical analysis was done using student’s t-test and Chi square. Results: Of.the 305 participants (186 males and 119 f.males), pre-operative hyponatremia was f.und in 30.8% and normonatremia in 59.7%. Pre-operative hyponatremia was more common in advance age, overweight, those presenting f.r open heart and other major surgeries and those with background chronic heart f.ilure and chronic liver disease. Participants with pre-operative hyponatremia had shortened and also prolonged hospital stay and higher risk of.death than with normonatremia. Conclusion: Pre-operative hyponatremia is common in high dependency surgical unit particularly in the elderly, those with comorbidities and those presenting f.r major heart surgeries. Ef.ect of.vitamin E on oxidative stress status in small intestine of.diabetic rat

AIM:To investigate the ef.ect of.vitamin E on oxidative stress status in the small intestine of.diabetic rats. METHODS:Twenty-f.ur male Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups:Control (C),non-treated diabetic (NTD) and vitamin E-treated diabetic (VETD) groups. The increases in lipid peroxidation,protein oxidation and superoxide dismutase (SOD) in these three groups was compared af.er 6 wk. RESULTS:There was no signif.cant dif.erence in catalase activity between NTD and control rats. Compared to NTD rats,the treatment with vitamin E signif.cantly decreased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation,and also increased catalase activity and SOD. CONCLUSION:The results revealed the occurrence of.oxidative stress in the small intestine of.diabetic rats. Vitamin E,as an antioxidant,attenuates lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation,and increases antioxidant def.nse mechanism.

Background: Metabolic acidosis (MA) is a common finding on the surgical ward, more so in the intensive care unit. Diseases affecting the major organ systems of the body and higher grades of surgery are common risk factors for MA. It is associated with poor treatment outcome. Aim: To determine the risk factors and clinical correlates of metabolic acidosis and assess its relationship with treatment outcome. Methodology: A retrospective study at the “Tristate Heart and vascular Center” in Ilishan-Remo South west Nigeria, on patients that had cardiac and vascular surgeries from January 2015 to December 2019. Three hundred and forty two participants took part in the study. The demographic, clinical and laboratory findings were entered. Statistical analysis was with Student’s t-test and Chi square. Introduction: Non-steroidal anti-inf.ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) use is very common. NSAIDs use could be associated with elevated eosinophil count which could be a class ef.ect or patient-related. Inf.ammation could be the link between NSAIDs use and eosinophilia. Aims: To compare the pattern of.eosinophil count in the peripheral blood of.f.equent users of.NSAIDs and healthy controls. Methodology: Two hundred (one hundred f.equent users of.NSAIDs and 100 healthy controls) participants who had no known risk f.ctor f.r kidney disease and had given inf.rmed consent were recruited. Blood was taken to determine the white cell count and dif.erentials, serum electrolyte and creatinine, and random blood sugar. Results: The mean age of.NSAIDs users was not signif.cantly dif.erent f.om controls, P = 0.3. The mean eosinophil count was higher in males than f.males. The incidence of.eosinophilia in NSAIDs users was 4%. The mean Eosinophil count of.NSAIDs users was insignif.cantly higher than controls, 164.3 ± 51 6 vs 135. 6 ± 53.4, P = 0.4. The mean platelet count of.NSAIDs users was signif.cantly higher compared to controls, P = 0.04. The mean hematocrit of.NSAIDs users was signif.cantly lower than the controls, P = 0.02. Propionic acid derivatives were associated with the highest eosinophil count. Eosinophil count was positively related to age and serum creatinine and inversely related to blood glucose, hematocrit and glomerular f.ltration rate. Conclusion: The incidence of.eosinophilia was 4%. The eosinophil count was higher in f.equent NSAIDs users than occasional and non-users, in males than f.males and with use propionic acid derivatives compared to other NSAIDs. The Eosinophil count was positively related to age and platelet count. Introduction: In Benin, Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) drivers play an essential role in the logistics chain, f.cilitating the transportation of.goods within the country or between other countries in the sub-region. HGV drivers are prof.ssionals who experience adverse working conditions, exposing them to risky behaviours, including Psychoactive Substance (PAS) misuse, leading to particularly severe road accidents. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of.PAS misuse among HGV drivers and identif. associated f.ctors in Cotonou, Benin. Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey involving HGV drivers at parking areas in Cotonou f.om 26 March to 10 April 2023. The dependent variable was the PAS misuse by HGV drivers, and the independent variables were related to their socio-demographic characteristics, health status and lif.style habits, and prof.ssional characteristics. Data analysis involved determining the prevalence of.PAS misuse with a 95% Conf.dence Interval (95% CI). Subsequently, we identif.ed f.ctors associated with PAS misuse among the participants using multivariate logistic regression. We presented the f.nal regression results as adjusted odds ratios (aOR) with 95% CI. Results: The study included 425 HGV drivers. Among them, 53 (12.47%, 95% CI = 9.64 - 15.98) were misusing PAS. Compared to drivers aged 35 and older, those aged under 25 (aOR = 10.67, 95% CI = 3.56 - 32.03) and those aged 25 to 34 (aOR = 3.47, 95% CI = 1.37 - 8.82) had higher odds of.PAS misuse. Drivers with a primary education were less likely (aOR = 0.43, 95% CI = 0.19 - 0.97) to misuse PAS than those with no f.rmal education. Drivers suf.ering f.om cardiovascular diseases were also three times more likely (aOR = 3.08, 95% CI = 1.08 - 8.81) to misuse PAS than others. The odds of.PAS misuse were also higher among drivers who reported taking breaks than those claiming not to (aOR = 3.11, 95% CI = 1.57 - 6.18).
