ZnO nanosheets and nanoflakes were grown on alumina particles in the absence of surfactants via heterogeneous precipitation using urea, zinc acetate and bayerite as precursors. Thermo-gravimetric analysis （TGA）, X-ray diffraction （XRD） and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） were used and the results indicated the formation of only two phases： wurtzite-type ZnO and γ-Al2O3. ZnO nanoflakes were grown on alumina particles in the samples with ZnO content of 40 and 60 wt%, By increasing the ZnO content to 80 wt%, a porous hierarchical structure of ZnO with nanosheet arrays appeared. Both of these nanoflakes and nanosheets were about 40-80 nm in thickness and about 1-2 μm in diameter. It was proposed that Zns（CO3）2（OH）6 nuclei undergo higher growth rates in thin sheets at edges of bayerite particles with a higher surface energy. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller （BET） measurements proved a reachable high surface area for hierarchical structures of ZnO nanosheets, which could mainly be attributed to their unique growth on alumina particles. Also, UV absorption results revealed that ZnO--Al2O3 compositions still show the UV characteristic absorption of ZnO, which can evidence the presence of photocatalytic properties in ZnO-Al2O3 compositions.

Construction of managed aquifer recharge structures(MARS) to store floodwater is a common strategy for storing depleted groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions, as part of integrated water resources management(IWRM). MARS divert surface water to groundwater, but this can affect downstream fluvial processes. The impact of MARS on fluvial processes was investigated in this study by combining remote sensing techniques with hydro-sediment modeling for the case of the Kaboutar-AliChay aquifer, northwestern Iran. The impact of MARS on groundwater dynamics was assessed, sedimentation across the MARS was modeled using a 2 D hydrodynamic model, and morphological changes were quantified in the human-impacted alluvial fan using Landsat time series data and statistical methods. Changes were detected by comparing data for the periods before(1985 e1996) and after(1997 e2018) MARS construction. The results showed that the rate of groundwater depletion decreased from2.14 m/yr before to 0.86 m/yr after MARS construction. Hydro-sediment modeling revealed that MARS ponds slowed water outflow, resulting in a severe decrease in sediment load which lead to a change from sediment deposition to sediment erosion in the alluvial fan. Morphometric analyses revealed decreasing alluvial fan area and indicated significant differences(p < 0.01) between pre-and post-impact periods for different morphometric parameters analyzed. The rate of change in area of the Kaboutar-Ali-Chay alluvial fan changed from à0.228 to à0.115 km2/year between pre-and post-impact periods.

A modified failure criterion for transversely isotropic rocks

A modified failure criterion is proposed to determine the strength of transversely isotropic rocks. Me-chanical properties of some metamorphic and sedimentary rocks including gneiss, slate, marble, schist, shale, sandstone and limestone, which show transversely isotropic behavior, were taken into consider-ation. Afterward, introduced triaxial rock strength criterion was modified for transversely isotropic rocks. Through modification process an index was obtained that can be considered as a strength reduction parameter due to rock strength anisotropy. Comparison of the parameter with previous anisotropy in-dexes in literature showed reasonable results for the studied rock samples. The modified criterion was compared to modified Hoek-Brown and Ramamurthy criteria for different transversely isotropic rocks. It can be concluded that the modified failure criterion proposed in this study can be used for predicting the strength of transversely isotropic rocks.

Based on the nonlocal elasticity theory, the vibration behavior of circular double-layered graphene sheets（DLGSs） resting on the Winkler- and Pasternak-type elastic foundations in a thermal environment is *** governing equation is derived on the basis of Eringen＇s nonlocal elasticity and the classical plate theory（CLPT）.The initial thermal loading is assumed to be due to a uniform temperature rise throughout the thickness direction. Using the generalized differential quadrature（GDQ）method and periodic differential operators in radial and circumferential directions, respectively, the governing equation is discretized. DLGSs with clamped and simply-supported boundary conditions are studied and the influence of van der Waals（vd W） interaction forces is taken into *** the numerical results, the effects of various parameters such as elastic medium coefficients, radius-to-thickness ratio,thermal loading and nonlocal parameter are examined on both in-phase and anti-phase natural frequencies. The results show that the thermal load and elastic foundation respectively decreases and increases the fundamental frequencies of DLGSs.

Ground-motion Intensity Measures (IMs) are used to quantify the strength of ground motions and evaluate the response of structures. IMs act as a link between seismic demand and seismic hazard analysis and therefore, have a key role in performance-based earthquake engineering. Many studies have been carried out on the determination of suitable IMs in terms of effi ciency, suffi ciency and scaling robustness. The majority of these investigations focused on ordinary structures such as buildings and bridges, and only a few were about buried pipelines. In the current study, the optimal IMs for predicting the seismic demand of continuous buried steel pipelines under near-fi eld pulse-like ground motion records is investigated. Incremental dynamic analysis is performed using twenty ground motion records. Using the results of the regression analysis, the optimality of 23 potential IMs are studied. It is concluded that specifi c energy density (SED) followed by VSI[ω1(PGD+RMSd )] are the optimal IMs based on effi ciency, suffi ciency and scaling robustness for seismic response evaluation of buried pipelines under near-fi eld ground motions.

Effects of weathering depth and thickness on rock failure:Experimental approach and particle flow code simulation

This study investigated the effects of weathering depth and thickness on the failure mechanisms of rock samples through experimental and numerical *** first configuration involved conducting artificial weathering on limestone using the freezing and thawing(F-T)for 40 *** mechanical parameters of the samples were measured at the end of the 40th *** the second configuration,a series of specimens underwent salt crystallization(S-C)tests for 20 *** results were validated using discrete element method(DEM).Next,the weathered limestone model with dimensions of 108 mm54 mm were *** weathering layers were tested at four different thicknesses(i.e.2.5 mm,5 mm,7.5 mm,and 10 mm)and three different positions(at the surface,5 mm under the rock surface,and 10 mm under the rock surface).According to the results,weathering depth and thickness have a considerable effect on the failure *** results also showed a correlation between the values of compressive strength and failure mechanisms associated with the weathering *** numerical results revealed that the tension crack was the dominant ***,with increasing weathering thickness,Young's modulus,crack initiation stress,and final strength decreased in constant weathering *** results also demonstrated that the failure progress of the numerical models was similar to that observed in the laboratory.
