Association of serum lipid levels with diabetic retinopathy

AIM: To assess the association between serum lipids and diabetic retinopathy (DR). · METHODS: Sixty -one diabetic patients without retinopathy (NDR), 55 diabetic patients with non - proliferative retinopathy (NPDR) and 75 diabetic patients with proliferative retinopathy (PDR) according to ETDRS grading scale were enrolled in this study. Total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglyceride values were compared between the groups. ·RESULTS: The groups were well-balanced in terms of age and gender (P =0.071, P =0.265 respectively). The mean HbA1c values were significantly lower in NDR group than the NPDR and PDR groups(P =0.004, P =0.009 respectively). Mean total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, HDL and VLDL levels were not significantly different between the groups (P =0.693, P =0.774, P =0.644, P = 0.910 and P =0.967 respectively, one way ANOVA). Mean total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, HDL and VLDL levels were not significantly different between the patients with ME and patients without ME(P =0.622, P =0.113, P =0.955, P =0.735 and P =0.490 respectively, t -test). The mean blood glucose significantly correlated with total cholesterol (r =0.173, P =0.017) and LDL (r =0.190, P = 0.008). The mean HbA1c significantly correlated with total cholesterol (r =0.158, P =0.030) and triglyceride (r =0.148, P =0.042). ·CONCLUSION: Serum lipid levels were not significantly associated with the severity of DR or existence of ME despite the significant correlation between the mean blood glucose, HbA1c and total cholesterol.

Fascioliasis presenting as colon cancer liver metastasis on 18Ffluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography: A case report

BACKGROUND Fascioliasis is caused by watercress and similar freshwater plants or drinking water or beverages contaminated with metacercariae. Fascioliasis can radiologically mimic many primary or metastatic liver tumors. Herein, we aimed to present the treatment process of a patient with fascioliasis mimicking colon cancer liver metastasis. CASE SUMMARY A 35-year-old woman who underwent right hemicolectomy due to cecum cancer was referred to our clinic for management of colon cancer liver metastasis. Both computed tomography and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography revealed several tumoral lesions localized in the right lobe of the liver. After a 6-course FOLFOX (folinic acid, fluorouracil, oxaliplatin) and bevacizumab regimen, the hypermetabolic state on both liver and abdominal lymph nodes continued, and chemotherapy was extended to a 12-course regimen. The patient was referred to our institute when the liver lesions were detected to be larger on dynamic liver magnetic resonance imaging 6 weeks after completion of chemotherapy. Right hepatectomy was performed, and histopathological examination was compatible with fascioliasis. Fasciola hepatica IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was positive. The patient was administered two doses of triclabendazole (10 mg/kg/dose) 24 h apart. During the follow-up period, dilatation was detected in the common bile duct, and Fasciola parasites were extracted from the common bile duct by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Triclabendazole was administered to the patient after ERCP. CONCLUSION Parasitic diseases, such as those caused by Fasciola hepatica, should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of primary or metastatic liver tumors, such as colorectal cancer liver metastasis, in patients living in endemic areas.

The Missile Defense System and Its Effects on Security Policies of the EU, the US and Turkey

The concept of smart power requires to combine soft and hard power. Thus, smart power is a new approach for the US politics towards the Middle East. As a consequence of smart power politics of the US, some newly members of the EU and Turkey has become a part of missile defense system. This is a significant indicator of usage of smart power for the EU members and Turkey. The security policies and practices of the US disclose a necessity for straight allies. For this reason, the relationship between the US, the EU and Turkey may be conceptualize with reference to the concept of smart power. In the case of Missile Defense System, Turkey has agreed to be a participant of this system after signing an agreement with the US. After that, Turkish government has confronted with some interior and exterior political difficulties. One of the most important difficulties is the interior resistance of missile defense system＇s Kiirecik Radar Station and its usage in Turkey. Another important point is the question of control of Turkish National Security and Defense strategy. In that respect, the US government＇s smart power applications may be included in the establishment of the radar station. The EU has also been included in that strategy. This paper will argue smart power practices of the US, the EU and Turkey with reference to comparative practices of power politics and the case of Missile Defense System. In this way, a comprehensive and system-type assessment of possible responses and the change in relations between stakeholder states not only in the issue of a set-up of a Turkish radar station, but on a broader range of international ＂hard＂ security balance will be demonstrated.

Efficiency of Some Plant Essential Oils on Root-Knot Nematode Meloidogyne incognita

During the last few decades, researchers have been in the search for environmental friendly ways to cope with agricultural pests, instead of using chemical pesticides. The use of essential oils has a high potential to become an alternative control strategy against plant parasitic nematodes. This study was conducted to determine the toxicity of 10 essential oils （Artemisia absinthium, Citrus bergamia, Eucalyptus citriodora, Hypericum perforatum, Lavandula officinalis, Mentha arvensis, Ocimum basilicum, Piper nigrum, Thymus serpyllum and Zingiber officinale） against the second stage juveniles of the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita. The aqueous solutions of these essential oils have been applied to the second stage juveniles in three different concentrations （1%, 3% and 5%） at four different application time intervals （12, 24, 48 and 72 h）. The interactions between the variables have been examined with repeated measure analysis of variance （ANOVA）. This showed that the interactions of essential oil-time and essential oil-concentration were statistically significant, and it is concluded that L. officinalis, A. absinthium, P. nigrum, C. bergamia and M. arvensis have the most toxic effect in all concentrations and times, respectively.

Echocardiographic Measurement of Pulmonary Arterial Pressure in Patients with Sarcoidosis

Introduction: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a significant complication and is poor prognostic factor for sarcoidosis. We evaluated various tests of diagnosis and treatment as well as the associations between PH and value of six-minute walk test (6 MWT) in sarcoidosis patients. Methods: This study was conducted with fifty patients with sarcoidosis. We grouped patients according to echocardiography. Results: PH prevalence in sarcoidosis was found to be 10%. In cases with likely PH, FEV1%, FVC%, MMF% was found to be lower. Although DLCO was less than 80% in the group of likely PH and over 80% in the other, there were no statistical differences between two groups. Mean value of FVC/DLCO ratio was 1.1 ± 0.38 in group of likely PH. There was no significant difference between groups. Mean distance of 6 MWT was 464 ± 105 m in all cases. There were no statistical differences between two groups in 6 MWT. Significant desaturation with exercise was observed in cases with PH (p = 0.007). Conclusion: In all stages, patients who have longer disease duration and abnormal pulmonary function tests, should be examined about PH. Patients should undergo 6 MWT and presence of desaturation after 6 MWT, even without hypoxemia, should be looked after and dealt with accordingly.

International Winter Wheat Improvement Program(IWWIP) was established in 1986 between the Government of Turkey and CIMMYT with three main objectives:(1) develop winter/facultative germplasm for Central and West Asia,(2) facilitate global winter wheat germplasm exchange, and(3) training wheat *** joined the program in 1991 making it a threeway partnership that continues to work *** germplasm developed by IWWIP as well as the winter wheat cultivars and lines received from global cooperators are assembled into international *** nurseries are offered annually to public and private entities(IWWIP website) and distributed to more than 100 cooperators in all *** impact has primarily been in new winter wheat cultivars combining broad adaptation, high yield potential, drought tolerance and disease resistance.A total of 93 IWWIP cultivars have been released in 11 countries occupying annually an estimated 2.5–3.0 *** cooperation with researchers in Turkey, Central and West Asia and several US universities has resulted in a number of publications reviewed in this *** IWWIP impacts include national inventories of wheat landraces in Turkey, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, their collection, characterization, evaluation and utilization.

Thiol-Disulphide Balance:Could Be a New Marker for Thyroid Cancer?

Objectives. Cancer is a very widespread disorder known in world wide since long, but its biochemical features remain unclear. Thyroid carcinomas are the most common endocrine cancer and its frequency continues to escalate. There is evidence that the serum concentration of TSH is an unreliant predictor for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. The formation of the plasma thiol pool from low and large molecular weight proteins suggests that thiol/disulfide balance is important in cancerous cases. The aim of this study was to investigate an oxidative stress marker (thiol/disulphide homeostasis) and IMA (Ischemia modified albumin), Albumin, CEA (Carcinoembryonic antigen), TSH (Thyroid stimulate hormone), thyroxine (T4), free thyroxine (FT4), triiodothyronine (T3) and free triiodothyronine (FT3) in patients with thyroid cancer and compare the results with healthy controls for the first time in literature. Materials-Methods: A total of 43 participants including 23 patients with thyroid cancer and 20 healthy individuals were included in the study. Serum levels of TSH, T4, FT4, T3 and FT3 have been measured during treatment and follow-up of patients with thyroid carcinoma. Serum levels of TSH, T4, FT4, T3 and FT3, IMA, Albumin, CEA, Native thiol (-SH), disulfide (-S-S) and total thiol (TT) as well as disulphide/native thiol and disulphide/total thiol ratios were compared between the groups. Native thiol, disulfide and total thiol concentrations were measured with a novel automated method (Roche, cobas 501, Mannheim, Germany). Results and conclusion: This paper discusses an oxidative stress marker (thiol/disulphide homeostasis) and tumor markers IMA, Albumin, CEA, TSH, T4, FT4, T3 and FT3 in patients with thyroid cancer and compare the results with healthy controls. Mean age at participant was 41.73 years for thyroid cancer patients (21 females/2 males). A control group of 20 participants was included the study (19 females/1 male, mean age 51.75).

Major-minor element analysis in some plant seeds consumed as feed in Turkey

In this study, samples (clover, oats, bean, green lentil, spinach, corn, red lentil and rice) taken from some seeds consumed as food by people and from plant seeds used as provender are examined. Element analysis (Al, B, Ba, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr, Sb, Si, Ti, U, Zn and Zr) in these samples was measured by using ICP-OES. Ca, K and Mg as major elements in all samples are determined. As results of the element analysis, meaningful relations between the elements in seeds have been researched by making statistical comparisons using one way analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Thyroid status of iodine deficient newborn infants living in central region of Turkey: a pilot study

Background:Iodine deficiency (ID) during the fetal and neonatal periods can lead to neonatal *** study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ID on the thyroid hormone level of newborns living in ***:Between 1998 and 2013,71 newborns with a urinary iodine concentration 40 mU/L and fT4 <8.5 pmol/L) were treated with levothyroxine (n=26,T group),while the remaining infants remained untreated (n=45,UT group).Thyroid hormones were subsequently measured 7-14 days later in a sub-sample of both treated and untreated ***:The average values at the time of admission were as follows [median (min-max)].fT3:5.0 (2.8-7.1) pmol/L,fT4:7.7 (0.13-19.1) pmol/L,TSH:75 (14-426) mU/L,Tg:464 (226-1100) ng/mL,urinary iodine concentration (UIC):30 (0-61)zg/L,breast milk iodine levels:21 (10-150)zg/L,thyroid ultrasound (USG):1.10 (0.24-1.95) mL for the T group;and fF3:5.7 (1.7-12.7) pmol/L,fT4:16.2 (9.9-33.5) pmol/L,TSH:5.4 (0.63-41.8)mU/L,Tg:171 (15-2124) ng/mL,UIC:39 (0-90)pg/L,breast milk iodine levels:47 (10-120) μg/L,thyroid USG:0.75 (0.35-1.72) mL for the UT group.A significant difference was found between groups in respect to tT3,tT4,TSH and Tg *** significant difference in thyroid ultrasonography,UIC,and breast milk iodine levels was found between the two *** Tg levels of 50 out of 71 patients were measured,40 (80%) of whom had Tg levels above the normal range (101 ng/mL).Conclusions:In our country,despite the use of iodized salt,congenital hypothyroidism due to ID remains a *** Tg level of newborns can be used as a good indicator of ID.
